Details of changes to restrictions effective from Monday are set out in Portugal Resident at That article also sets out further changes possible from 18th May 'if all goes well' including allowing restaurants, cafés etc (but not bars or night clubs) being allowed to open with strict limits on customer numbers. Cinemas, theatres, football etc will have to wait until June.

Just heard that all holiday lets have to have deep cleaning certificate to open again. Sounds good but mine and most others have been empty for 3 months. The virus cannot live longer than 3 days on surfaces. Anybody heard anything ?

Norm55 - heard from where please? Source! No doubt someone will make a great deal of money if that really is so. Who is qualified to do this work and who will issue certificates? How long will it take to get around the hundreds of such properties just in Albufeira? As for football here, there is no mention of it re-starting on the official Liga Portugal website. Oh, but of course it is a holiday today, so website news people may not be at work.

I caught it on BBC news this morning although more research has found that Clean and Safe badges are to be issued to holiday companies in an effort to reassure holiday makers it is safe to return. Quote " The Algarve Tourist Board in partnership with Turismo De Portugal has introduced the badges as a way of ensuring safety of workers and visitors....All companies registered with ANT will be able to request their clean and safe stamp …….Badges will be valid for a year " So yes I guess there will be a fee involved. It may not effect rental apartments unless they think its a good wheeze and escalate it. Am now thinking this may have been wrongly reported this morning and refers to hotels. The regional bus company EVA has said this similar 'clean and safe' sign will be on their buses, in English and Portuguese. One wonders if anyone was worried about them not being clean and safe prior to all this! Similarly anywhere else that tourists may fear otherwise to tread. Common sense dictates that no hotel or holiday rental wants to be in the news because of their customers falling ill, something that happens fairly often even in the normal run of things. There was a huge fuss here not that long ago when people fell ill in numbers at some of the hotels. I can imagine that cleaning would be extra thorough, just in case.

I've not heard of anything re clean & safe badges for private holiday rentals either.
only this translated from the observado. |Sorry for big print but copy & pasted it. The Portuguese government intends to start a phased reopening with the intention of not losing control over the numbers of infected people. The idea is to restart the economy in a conscious and balanced way and at each stage they will decide whether the measures implemented will continue, whether they should be adapted or whether it is necessary to go back. It is therefore important to remember that there may be changes regarding the schedule described below and there may be some conditions announced for Phase 2 & 3, which we will of course keep Members updated about as information is released by the government. There may be some futher clarifications regarding Phase 1 after the weekend, but at the moment these are the 3 phases that have been announced by the government. 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐇𝐀𝐒𝐄 - 𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝟒𝐭𝐡 Spaces up to 200 m2; Small shops; Hairdressers, barbers, car stands, registration offices (Conservatória), Finanças and non-concentrated public services (by appointment only, so make sure to call first); Bookstores, libraries and archives; Buses with a driver's cabin in order to isolate them; Individual sporting activities such as tennis, surf and golf; (without using changing rooms). 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐇𝐀𝐒𝐄 - 𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝟏𝟖𝐭𝐡 Spaces up to 400 m2; Restaurants, museums, cafes, terraces and similar; Palaces; Kindergartens (in this first phase, parents can still choose to continue to stay at home with the family support subsidy); Schools (classes/exams for only 11th and 12th grades); Municipalities can decide to open other establishments. For example, if a space has more than 400 m2 but does not concentrate a lot of people, the municipality may decide to open it. 𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐏𝐇𝐀𝐒𝐄 – 𝐉𝐔𝐍𝐄 𝟏𝐬𝐭 Spaces with more than 400 m2; Kindergartens, pre-schools and ATL; Stores; Citizens Offices (Loja do Cidadão); Shopping centres; Cinemas and theatres with restricted capacity; Resumption of sporting competitions in open spaces but without an audience; Team sports. 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬: Protective masks will be mandatory in public offices, public transports, shops and schools. Pay attention to how to use masks, bearing in mind that there are masks for single use and others that can be reused. Make sure to confirm the characteristics and the indications of the type of mask you are using. There is no provision yet for access to the beaches; It is still our civic duty to remain at home as much as we can; Events or gatherings with more than 10 people are prohibited; There can be a maximum of 5 people in closed spaces under 100 m2; Funerals can now have family attending. PLEASE don’t relax your guard now. Wash your hands regularly and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, preferably with either a tissue or your forearm but not your hands. Clean surfaces often and keep the social distancing measures |

Interesting since 'shopping centres' and beaches in Albufeira have not been closed. Local buses have been operating normally, entry through the rear doors. Buses here do not have driver's 'cabins'. No mention of bars being allowed to re-open. " Protective masks will be mandatory in public offices, public transports, shops and schools" These haven't been mandatory all these weeks, so what difference is this going to make? And where can they be obtained? And not having to wear them in restaurants?

Don’t know if this link will work, if not you want Portugal News online, page 6. Details of the”Clean & Safe” seal are there and it’s obtainable for free, the seal that is, and you can get it online. All of which begs the question, is it worth the paper it’s printed on? Edit. It does work! I’ve impressed myself!

" And not having to wear
them in restaurants?" Maybe restaurants haven't been included because to eat masks would be off most of the time anyway. Distancing would have to do the job. Fewer tables, less income. I guess for a while people may be wary of being in busy places in any case. With regard to deep cleaning - a bus, hotel etc. will only be as clean as the last person in it. I'll disregard any such empty "certificate" and take my own precautions.

I still don't know how I get to a place selling masks as I don't have one to use when on the bus to get there. I will have to try Continente today I suppose before the rules come into effect. Restaurants etc will only be able to have about 50% of their normal capacity used. Whether it will be worth some of them opening, at least until tourist flights resume, remains to be seen. [edit - I read that Portimão council is sending masks to around 35,000 households, free. Any chance of that here I wonder?]

On Tuesday there will be an EGM of the Portuguese league management to discuss the possible resumption and conclusion of the 2019 / 2020 football season (for the top two leagues only) that will be permitted from 29th May. Correction / update - it seems that the LPF has already decided that the second league will not be completed. The 'current' leaders Nacional and Farense are expected to be promoted to the Liga NOS (top level) to replace the two relegated from that if and when it finishes. Thinking appears to be that so many second league games would be meaningless. There will be no relegation / promotion between that and the third level (much to the disgust of Olhanense) and although playing behind closed doors would not be much of a difference in terms of numbers watching, the logistics and expense of organisation would not be worthwhile.
