I shall be there in person! Since Imortal B have managed to lose their last 8 games despite having finished second in (western section) phase 1, the result should be beyond doubt. But, you never know, funny old game and all that. The game is being played in the main stadium for safety reasons.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES
Liga Betclic Portimonense 2 - 2 Rio Ave att. 2528 Gil Vicente 2 - 0 Farense att. 5831 An equaliser in the seventh minuite of added time gace Portimonense a vital point in their fight to avoid the trauma of the relegation playoff. They now stand 16th, one point behind Estrela Amadora and two behind Boavista. The equation is simple. They must win the final game and hope that Estrela Amadora do not, preferably that Boavista don't either. The vital games are these : Boavista v Vizela (Vizela already relegated) Estrela Amadora v Gil Vicente Farense v Portimonense Ko's Saturday 18th May 1530hrs. 'all - ticket' go to https://www.scfarense.pt/bilheteira/ Campeonato de Portugal Second Phase South Group No games last weekend. Next Sunday Moncarpachense will be at home to SC Lusitania with a 12 noon kick off, so that their opponents can get home by nightfall! Moncarapachense are bottom of the four team group with only a slender mathematical chance of making the promotion spot. ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE Second phase promotion group Lagos 2 - 1 Ferreiras Lagoa 3 -1 Odiáxere Silves 2 - 0 Quarteirense Lagoa have already won the league and the single promotion place. The league will drag on for the rest until 1st June. Next Saturday's games, all at 1700hrs Odiáxere v Ferreiras Quarteirense v Lagoa Silves v Lagos Relegation group Lusitano VRSA 2 - 0 Paderne Carvoeiro United 3 - 1 Portimonense B Os 11 Esperanças 2 - 1 Culatrense Carvoeiro United are already relegated. Culatrense will probably join them. Three games remain. Next Saturday at 1700hrs : Portimonense B v Paderne Culatrense v Carvoeiro United Lusitano VRSA v Os 11 Esperanças ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION TWO Second Phase Promotion Group Imortal Albufeira B 0 - 2 SC Olhanense 1912 Moncarpachense B 2 - 1 Campinense Os Armacanenses 1 - 3 Guia One game remaining. SC Olhanense are top with 20 points and promoted. Moncarpachense B are second with 19 points, Guia third with 17, so the second place is up for grabs. The important game is Guia v Moncarapachense B at Guia next Saturday at 1900hrs. Olhanense will be at home to Os Armancanenses at the same time. The bottom two, Campinense and Imortal B will also be in action, same time. Silver Group Ferreiras B 2 -1 Messinense Sport Faro Benfica 2 -3 Sambrasense Quarteira SC 6 - 0 Lagoa B All pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but Quarteira SC maintain their 100% record of nine wins in nine games. The final round of games next Saturday at 1900 : Quarteira SC v Sambrasense Messinense v Sport Faro Benfica Lagoa B v Ferreiras B Bronze group final placement matches 1st and 2nd : Mentes Desporto 0 - 4 Louletano B 3rd and 4th Odiáxere B 0 - 1 Alvor 5th and 6th Bensafrim 8 - 2 Marítimo Olhanense WOMEN'S FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE THIRD DIVISION Second Phase South group Guia 4 - 0 Salesiano Arouca Guia finished second, one point behind winners Pasteis da Bola. That means they have to go into a promotion / relegation playoff with a team from the bottom of the second division. Which one is not made clear in the press release! More later. |

Portimonense did their bit winning 3-1, But the referee at Boavista did his bit for the bigger club too, giving them a 101st minute penalty to get the draw they needed to avoid the relegation play-off. Portuguese football, eh...

Portimonense can certainly count themselves unlucky. They now face a playoff to remain in the top tier against either AVS or Marítimo, whose final games are both at 1100am this morning. Attendance at Farense yesterday was 5888, almost a sell-out. AVS must be favourites. They have a home game against mid-table Tondela, while Marítimo (Madeira) have a long trip to Viseu to play Académico. AVS are based in the small town of Vila das Aves, which is between Porto and Guimarães, up north. Their average crowd this season is 947, rather fewer than several teams in the UK National League south. How would they fare in the big boys league on such a small financial base? Already promoted to the top tier with one game remaining are Santa Clara from the Azores and CD Nacional from Madeira. A fair amount of island hopping next season then. Sporting won the league by ten points from Benfica, with FC Porto a distant third and having to play in the Europa League next season. Braga finished fourth and enter the Europa Conference League. Relegated from the Liga Betclic into the second division are Vizela and Chaves. Also of note is the relegation of Belenenses into the wasteland of the third division.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES
Liga Betclic The final weekend of the season in the top leagues saw Portimonese condemned to a playoff to avoid relegation. Although recent form had improved, a string of defeats in February and March gave them too big a task. As reported above, although they won their final game at Farense, the team above them drew and gained a vital point. Portimonense now have a two leg playoff against AVS. The first game will be at Portimão on Saturday 25th May, ko 1945hrs with the second leg at AVS little ground in Vila das Aves the following Sunday, 2nd June, also at 1945hrs. (None of this midweek stuff here!) Campeonato de Portugal second phase south group Moncarpachense 0 - 1 SC Lusitania Moncarapachense are bottom of the four team group and way out of the running. Two more games to play, the next of which is next Sunday at Vítoria Setubal ko 1530hrs. They and Lusitania are one point apart at the top. ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE Second Phase Championship Group It drags on! Lagoa won the league and gained promotion weeks ago. Carvoeiro United are already relegated. Almost certain that Culatrense will join them. Portimonense B 3 - 0 Paderne Culatrense 2 - 1 Carvoeiro United Os 11 Esperanças 2 - 0 Lusitano VRSA Next Saturday at 1700hrs Portimonense B v Lusitano VRSA Paderne v Culatrense Carvoeiro United v Os 11 Esperanças ALGARVE LEAGUE SECOND DIVISION second phase championship group Final matches Campinense 6 - 3 Imortal Albufeira B Guia 0 - 1 Moncarapachense B SC OIhanense 1912 5 - 1 Os Armacanenses SC Olhanense win by 1 point over Moncarapachense B. Both will be promoted to the Algarve League First Division. Silver group final matches Lagoa B 0 - 1 Ferreiras B Messinense 1 - 2 Sport Faro Benfica Quarteira SC 2 -1 Sambrasense WOMEN's FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE THIRD DIVISION Guia won the southern group which finished on 12th May. They now face the winners of the northern group, Rio Ave, in a two legged final to determine the championship. LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES
In addition to yesterday's post, in the Campeonato de Portugal second phase south group the futile season for Moncarapachense drags on with yet another defeat, one-nil away at leaders Vítoria Setubal. Moncarapachense have nul points from their five games. Next Saturday morning they play their final match, at home to Santarém, ko 1100. At the same time the top two meet out in the Azores with hosts SC Lusitania needing a big win over Vítoria to claim the top position and a place in the final. In the northern group, the fixture god has also decreed that the top two will also meet. Amarante will host SC São João de Ver, with the latter also needing a big win. Algarve League Division One Second Phase This drags on, with the league and single promotion place long since won by Lagoa. Results Saturday 25th May - top group Odiáxere 2 - 4 Lagos Ferreiras 0 - 2 Quarteirense Lagoa 4 - 0 Silves Final round of matches next Saturday ko 1700hrs Quarteirense v Odíaxere Silves v Ferreiras Lagos v Lagoa bottom group Portimonense B 0 - 1 Lusitano VRSA Paderne 0 - 2 Culatrense Carvoeiro United 4 - 4 Os 11 Esperanças Carvoeiro United will be relegated. It's never certain whether the next to bottom team will also be relegated because of teams folding after the season but the final round of fixtures will be important, just in case. Culatrense have 32 points, Paderne and Portimonense B both have 34. Final round of fixtures next Saturday at 1700hrs Culatrense v Portimonense B Os 11 Esperanças v Paderne Lusitano VRSA v Carvoeiro United. |

Portimonense lost their second leg playoff last night, 2-1 to AVS in front of a sellout crowd of 5064. Having avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, there was no escape this time. Thus they are consigned to Liga 2. I will have to do the rest later.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS
The final weekend of the season as it concerns the Algarve teams. In addition to the gloomy news for Portimonense, the final round of matches in the Campeonato de Portugal second phase south group saw Moncarapachense win the 'dead rubber' against Santarém 1-0. That was their only win in the six game series. The game between the other two, Lusitania and Vítoria Setubal, was the title decider. It went the way of Lusitania by 2-1. Both teams finished on 13 points and the same goal difference, but the tie break was the results between the two teams. Vítoria had won the first game 3-1 and so finished top by that single goal margin. Vítoria will be promoted to Liga 3. In the Championship Final they will meet Amarante, who won their final game to secure the north group. That game will be played in the National Stadium near Lisbon on Monday 10th June, ko 1600. (That day is a public holiday, National or Portugal Day.) ALGARVE LEAGUE DIVISION ONE SECOND PHASE At long last the final round of matches has taken place. Top group Quarteirense 5 - 2 Odiáxere Silves 1 - 3 Ferreiras Lagos 3 - 2 Lagoa Lagoa finished way ahead on the top, 79 points from, in effect, 32 games. Lagos second on 57, Silves third with 53. Ferreiras 4th, 49 points, Quarteirense 5th with 48 and Odiáxere 6th on 43. Lagoa will ascend to the Campeonato de Portugal, the 4th tier of Portuguese football. They will be replaced by Imortal Albufeira, who were relegated. Bottom group Culatrense 3 - 2 Portimonense B Os 11 Esperanças 5 - 2 Paderne Lusitano VRSA 5 - 0 Carvoeiro United Carvoeiro finished bottom and will be relegated. If two teams go down, they will be joined by Paderne. WOMEN'S FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION THREE FINAL SECOND LEG Rio Ave 3 - 1 Guia. Rio Ave won 4 - 2 on aggregate. I do believe that both will be promoted to the Second Division but no doubt there will be all kinds of hurdles to jump before that is confirmed. And that is all until the League Cup gets under way in late July. I will list any pre-season matches below once these are confirmed. The National First and Second Division campaigns will be under way in mid August, the Campeonato de Portugal usually starts late August or early September along with the first rounds of the FA Cup. The Algarve League does not begin until late September. |

Early season matches. For the benefit of summer visitors who might want to catch a local game, these are the opening home fixtures for the two teams in the Liga Portugal. Dates and times have not yet been confirmed. Farense - top league - the team based in Faro. Weekend 10/11 August v Moreirense Weekend 24/25 August v Sporting (tickets are unlikely to be available to the general public) Portimonense - relegated to the second division now called Liga Meu Super (after a chain of supermarkets) Weekend 17/18 August v União Leiria Weekend 31 August/1 September v Marítimo Madeira I will add dates and times once these have been decided. In the case of Portimonense you pay at the stadium on the day. Farense will sell tickets on line at https://www.scfarense.pt/bilheteira/ The Campeonato de Portugal (4th Division) gets under way on 18th August. Fixtures are due out later today, 12th July. I will updated this post once I see them. There will be three Algarve teams - Lagoa, Louletano and Moncarapachense. Louletano play most of their home games in the 26,000 seater Algarve Stadium which provides for a somewhat surreal matchday experience. Average crowds in this league are 150 - 200. |

Fixtures for the Campeonato de Portugal (4th tier) are out. For the benefit of the hardy souls who enjoy non-league football in the UK and who might enjoy the lower echelons here, I list the first three weeks fixtures in the Algarve. August 18th Moncarapachense v Comércio Indústria ko 1700hrs August 25th Lagoa v Operário and Louletano v Moncarapachense both ko 1700hrs September 1st Moncarapachense v Sintrense ko 1500hrs I will confirm ko times and venues a week or so before. Louletano normally play at the Algarve Stadium - the big one between Faro and Loulé. Lagoa, it seems, will be playing their home games at their less than impressive ground in the town. Although they do have new floodlights. Moncarapachense play in the small town of Moncarapacho, to the north of Olhão. There is no suitable public transport at weekends. Car essential. Same goes for the Algarve Stadium actually. The Algarve League won't be under way until late September. That's the league in which Ferreiras and Imortal Albufeira will be playing.
