Turtles are back in the lagoon. A couple of pictures taken last week by Bob D.

A bit late but the bridge was officially opened only last Friday. Took a walk with a friend yesterday all the way into Armação de Pêra, as obviously were a lot of others. The lagoon was very full but much of the water was a nasty greencolour. Algae?  There were very few birds around. The river under the bridge was flowing fast and showed why the bridge was needed.

The bridge is now physically complete so you don't need to be an olympic longjumper to get across but a little gymnastic ability will come in handy as it's not officially open with a 5 bar gate across it. However this did not prevent a succession of people coming across and limboing through the gate.

Three months since my last visit. The bridge to complete the walkway is still not finished. There was no sign of any activity. The lagoon overflowed into the sea during the storms a couple of weeks ago and about half it is dry. Pictures taken Friday morning, 26th January 2024.

The high water mark can clearly be seen.

Arid wastes

At least there is some water for the birds and fish.

The canyon in the sand created by the rushing waters

The village of Pêra up on the hill.

A pastoral scene on the way back near the Praia Grande boardwalk. Probably about 60 goats and sheep in the flock.

Long time, no visit. Went down there yesterday. Some pictures :

Of interest to those who like walking and cycling around there, the new boardwalk all the way to Armação de Pêra is well under construction :

Interesting. Thanks.

The storms and heavy rain a couple of weeks ago caused the sand bar to be breached. The seaward side of the lagoon is almost empty. The system that controls the flow of water between the two halves is almsot closed, allowing water to build up on the otherside.

Some of the local inhabitants look decidely bemused.

Nearby, a flock of goats and sheep was happily grazing, including some very black ones that would make a nice pair of woolly gloves or a hat maybe. Most of the goats were being sensible, sitting under the trees.

Ages since I have  been there, so earlier today I dusted off the bike and took myself over. There as plenty of water in the lagoon and it's obvious it was even higher not long ago.

Recent rain has filled up the lagoon nicely. Lots of walkers around and some fairly avid looking bird watchers. Fat fish were seen in the water. The surrounding area looks to have been flooded also, very wet underfoot in parts.

One of the many abandoned cisterns and wells. I would have though that, with a water shortage looming, these could easily be made useful once again.  This one was fairly full.

Months since I have been to Salgados so off I was today on the trusty bicycle. The storms a couple of weeks ago caused the sand bar to be breached. It still is. The central section of the lagoon is almost dry, with just a trickle of water passing through. The birds though have plenty of water at the western end.  Although there is evidence of recent flooding, most of the land around is parched and dry once again. The weatherr was nice and warm, around 24º and there were a good few people on the beach taking a walk or just enjoying the autumn sun.

Ages since I have been down to Salgados so yesterday I pumped up the tyres and set off. The lagoon is fairly shallow at the moment, despite the recent rain. That usually means it is or has been open to the sea. The flamingoes and other waders didn't seem to mind. I encountered several walkers and a couple of cyclists. Access to the car parks is blocked and the boardwalk is also closed.

The lagoon is well filled despite the lack of rain. The tidal flow system is obviously working. Near the bridge the water still has a very green tinge. Pictures taken 4th July 2019. The first two show how dry it is around the edges.

The sand bar is holding up nicely. Sea water was entering through the pipes at quite a speed.
