Absolute rage in fact! On Thursday night Sporting (reserves) were 2-1 down in the Cup at Santa Clara in the Azores with time up. There was a shout for a penalty to Sporting. The referee didn't think so but the videomen intervened. It VAR took 12 minutes to check and then tell the ref to go and look at the little screen. He then awarded the penalty. During that time, Santa Clara had three players sent off for protesting. Penalty scored, Sporting won in extra time of course. Time after time the media and other comments said. Decisions always favour the top teams. And as for taking 12 minutes over a penalty review... Benfica posted on 'X' - What happened in this Portuguese Cup match in the Azores is inexcusable and unacceptable for the credibility of Portuguese football. Twelve minutes for them to find a penalty to benefit the same team as always, time after time. The director of the national referee's association has said that this was a big mistake all round that must not be repeated. Scant consolation for Santa Clara. |
