Imortal 4 - 0 Carvoeiro United Algarve Cup First Round
Even with leading scorer Duarte and club captain Pedro Rodrigues having the night off, Imortal were far too good for their Second Division opponents. A four goal lead by half-time ensured the win, but maybe Imortal did ease back after the break and for certain Carvoeiro did up their game, including a spell of four corners in 90 seconds, all of which came to nothing. A remarkable feature of the game, for these parts anyway, is that a total of only eight fouls were whistled up and not a single card shown. The rather portly referee might not have been quite up to speed. It was a nice night for football, but the counter-attraction of Bayern v Benfica on TV kept the crowd down to about 50. The first goal, after just three minutes, was somewhat bizarre. A very strong back-pass flew past the Carvoeiro 'keeper, hit the goalpost and obligingly rebounded to the feet of Tidjane Balde, who side-footed it home from 5 metres out. Imortal were already in complete control, with good moves down both flanks. Needed a finisher though. The second came from such a move, a deep cross from the right by Balde was met with a perfect header by Tomas Rodrigues that fairly shot past the helpless 'keeper. Alves and Almeida were running rings around the opposition and occasionally themselves. On 25 minutes a superb long range curling shot from Alves drew gasps from the fans. It hit the corner of post and crossbar, bounced down and again it was Balde on hand to stab the loose ball into the net. It should have been four shortly after, Balde's cross found Alves unmarked on the far post, but he spooned his shot high over the bar into the trees. Carvoeiro were chasing shadows, but when they did catch one on 35 minutes an ill advised tackle resulted in a penalty, nicely converted by Rangel. Four-nil at half time. Carvoeiro made three changes at half time, while Coelho replaced Dragnev for Imortal. Alves and Rangel managed to get in each others' way after Alves had beaten several defenders to set up another chance. Goal kick. Carvoeiro then had their three minutes in Imortal's half, winning those four corners before normal service was resumed. But Imortal were content by now to indulge in some passing practice. Chances didn't come. Almeida got a bang on the head that laid him out for a couple of minutes and had to go off, being replaced by Fenimam for his first appearance. Mass defence by Carvoeiro kept Imortal at bay. They did actually have a long range shot towards the end. Although I counted it as being on target, it was no bother to Inacio in goal, who had been a spectator for most of the evening. Ninety minutes was up, the referee decided that there would no time added despite five substitutions and the stoppage for Almeida's injury. Imortal team : Inacio; Prates, Jose, Dragnev, Tomas Rodrigues; Alves, Almeida, Santos, Balde; Rangel, Salvador. Subs used : Tome, Coelho, Fenimam, Palinhas Match statistics Free kicks conceded : Imortal 4, Carvoeiro United 4 including the penalty. Offside : Imortal 9, Carvoeiro United 0 Shots on target : Imortal 8 (all in the first half), Carvoeiro United 2 Shots off target : Imortal 6, Carvoeiro United 1 Shots blocked : Imortal 4, Carvoeiro United 1 Corners : Imortal 9, Carvoeiro United 5 Not a single yellow or red card to be seen! Imortal 3 - 0 Culatrense
Cheked and updated. Imortal dominated the early exchanges in a sign of what was to come. Duarte's great header was ruled out for offside after 11 minutes. But there wasn't long to wait for the opener. Two minutes later some neat play by Santos, cutting into the penalty area ended with a well placed pass to the feet of Alves, who finished accurately. Friota was called into action, making a superb double save from close range efforts. More pressure eventually told, with Duarte, unmarked at the far post heading home from a corner. There was some reaction from the visitors, but Imortal's defence dealt capably, blocking a couple of efforts and not needing Inacio in goal to take action. Cintra had a well directed free kick tipped over for a corner, but nothing came of it. Half time and the crowd of about 200 wondered how many more would be added in the second period. But it was not to be. Apart from an early move that ended with Alves being denied by a very timely tackle, there was literally nothing to write about for a very long time. The most activity was from Imortal's head coach Leandro Palma, whose arm waving indicated a level of frustration that was echoed by the mutterings among the crowd. Surely we can do better against this lot, as Cintra made yet another pass backwards from the half way line. The game finally woke up on the hour. An attack set up Duarte close in, but he got his feet in the wrong order and lost the ball. Balde made a good run down the right, his cross found Duarte but a good tackle put paid to that chance. Then, finally, came the third. A corner from the left, 'keeper went down to gather and fumbled, Tomas Rodrigues smacked in the loose ball. Could have been four moments later, but the ´keeper foiled Tome's effort and right at the end it was Tome whose run into the box was met by another solid challenge. The visitors' sole shot on target in the second half was headed away for a corner, which the taker promptly kicked behind the goal. A win's a win and three points kept Imortal at the top of the league, but surely they will need to play better than that next Saturday when visiting Portimonense B, who also are also 100% and are second only by virtue of a lesser goal difference. Good thing is that Portimonense's first team also have a game, so we ought not to see first team regulars up against us. Unfortunately there is no way I can get to that game, so Rua FM will be monitored. Imortal team : Inacio, Pedro Rodrigues, Dragnev, Sousa, Prates, Cintra; Alves, Santos, Rangel; Duarte, Tome. Subs used : Balde, Coelho, Tomas Rodrigues, Almeida Match statistics Free kicks conceded : Imortal 10, Culatrense 14 Offside : Imortal 1, Culatrense 0 Shots on target : Imortal 9, Culatrense 2 Shots off target : Imortal 1, Culatrense 2 Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Culatrense 2 Corners : Imortal 11, Culatrense 3 Yellow cards : Imortal 0, Culatrense 3 Red cards : none If you are on Facebook you can see pictures from the game at https://www.facebook.com/imortalfans/

A little bit of detail about Saturday's game. I was listening to the radio commentary, but the commentator was of the excitable nature! Portimonense took the lead on 15 minutes through
number 9 André Araújo. The game seemed to be up and down, especially in the second with numerous chances being created. Imortal won a corner in the 66th minute that was swung in low. The commentator wasn't sure if it had gone straight in or whether the goalkeeper had fumbled it. Official data awards the goal to Tómas Cintra, his first of the season. Six minutes added time couldn't produce a winner. Imortal team: Inacio; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnev; Cintra, Tomas Rodrigues, Alves, Santos; Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Coelho, Rangel, Balde, Salvador. Next game for Imortal is on Saturday, away to Quarteirense. The game is actuallybeing played at Almancil stadium. Again, I cannot go as my sporting talent is required at the other end of the Algarve.

Groan! A first defeat of the league season at Quarteirense. A single goal on 53 minutes from the penalty spot did the damage. Elsewhere, a last gasp equaliser for Portimonense B at Silves gave them the point that puts them on top of the table with 23 points, one ahead of Imortal. Next up for Imortal is a home game against Silves, this coming Saturday at 1500hrs. Not much I can add, not being there. I caught the last half hour on the radio. It sounded like Imortal didn't create much in the way of scoring chances. In the ten minutes added at the end, three Imortal players managed to get themselves in the book. Suspensions must be looming for some. Imortal team : Tiago Friota; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnev; Cintra, Tomás Rodrigues, Santos, Alves; Duarte, Toma. Subs used : Coelho, Almeida, Rangel and Balde. A new face in goal with Inacio injured. Friota was with Culatrense for a couple of seasons but didn't play much last season.

Yesterday : Imortal 3 - 2 Silves an exciting game for the neutrals, a nervy one for the home fanss. Briefly, more tomorrow, Imortal were two -nil down at half town. A couple of defensive errors gave Silves opportunities they didn't waste. The half time team talk in the home changing room was obviously sucessful! A different team emerged and three second half goals, including a penalty, gave Imortal the win they needed. Undoubted highlight was a spectacular overhead kick from substitute Rafael Rangel, whose first touch it was having been brought on about 30 seconds earlier. Full report on Monday. Defeat for Portimonense B at the hands of Ferreiras means that Imortal are back at the top of the table. Next week, Imortal make the short trip up the N395 to Ferreiras, who now sit third.

Imortal Albufeira 3 - 2 Silves
An important win for Imortal that, combined with the defeat of Portimonense B at the hands of Ferreiras, puts them back on top of the table. It's going to be an interesting game next Saturday when Imortal travel ten minutes up the road to face Ferreiras. A nice warm and sunny afternoon greeted players and fans. Imortal had Tidjane Balde in the starting line up for the first time in a league match this season. Jose Coelho returned to the defence after three games as sub. Santos and Prates dropped to the bench. The games was largely dominated by the huge din of a sound system at a children's skateboarding event in the adjacent skate park! Couldn't hear ourselves think at times. The first was very uneventful except for the two defensive errors by Imortal that let Silves into a first half lead. Thirteen minutes passed before the first scoring chance, a wild shot from the visitors that went into the trees behind the goal. It was nineteen minutes before the first free kick was given. The referee made up for this in the second half. Then two goals in five minutes midway through. A neat passing move down the right by Silves found Giovanni Sluiter unmarked on the far side of the penalty area. His low, hard, shot was fired across the goal into the opposite corner giving ´keeper Froita no chance. The second was also an error by defenders, failing to deal with a long ball sent into the box which was seized upon by Rafael Pinto, who slammed it into the net from the edge of the area. Imortal responded in a positive way, but Cintra fluffed his shot after good work by Tome had created some space. Silves should have gone three-nil up just before half time, but it was an abysmal pass went nowhere near Youri Rosebloom who had all the time and space in the world. Half time and a big team talk needed. Certainly worked! Looked like a different team that came out. The second period began with an odd incident. There was a foul by Imortal and a yellow card waved. It wasn't me, said Cintra. Captain Pedro spoke with the referee, who changed his mind and booked Coelho instead. I wonder why? Perhaps yellow cards are being accumulated. Imortal's pressure was immediate. Duarte was just off target with a header off a cross by Cintra. Then came a good move down the right wing by Prates. His cross found Duarte, whose header was fumbled by the goalie, Tome hit the bar off the rebound, the ball was not properly cleared and fell to Walter Alves, whose first time volley from 12 metres sped into the net. A few minutes later Imortal had a big shout for a penalty when Alves was sent sprawling. Nothing doing. Balde was booked for dissent. More pressure from Imortal eventually told. Balde sent in another cross from the right, which was blocked by the arm of Tiago Serras so obviously that there was nothing in the way of protest. Duarte placed the ball on the spot. Silves did then engage in some petty pushing and shoving to delay the kick. Duarte never took his eye off the ball and a minute later, once people were behaving, calmly dispatched the penalty right down the middle. Silves goalie Keven Lopes then did the sit down routine to get his team a time out, claiming he had cramp. He hadn't done anything to get cramp, derided the crowd. Once the game resumed, Imortal pushed hard for the winner. And what a winner it was! If you are on Facebook, find the Imortal Fans page and watch the video or follow this link - https://www.facebook.com/imortalfans/videos/3390824371214331/. Rafael Rangel, super sub, was the hero. He had been on the pitch only a couple of minutes. A floated cross from the right headed into the melée. Duarte's head lifted it across the bodies towards Rangel. Unmarked and with his back to goal he shaped for an overhead kick, which he executed perfectly. From eight metres out the ball shot past the stationary goalkeeper. All he could do was wave his arm in a half hearted appeal for offside. Joy unbounded on the field and for most in the stands. News was filtering through that Portimonense B were being held by Ferreiras, a noise which grew louder when Ferreiras took the lead as six minutes of added time were announced in our game. There was time for Tome to cap a good run with a fine shot that was only just wide. The game ended with several Imortal players flat out. Imortal back on top and next up the challenge along the road at Ferreiras, ko 1500hrs on Saturday I hope! Imortal team : Froita; Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnev, Sousa; Cintra, Coelho, Alves, Balde; Tome aka Ruca and Duarte, aka Marocas. Subs used Tomás Rodrigues, Prates and Rangel. Match statistics Freekicks conceded : Imortal 4, Silves 10 and the penalty (some sort of record for Imortal but they did have the ball most of the time.) Offside : Imortal 1, Silves 2 Shots on target : Imortal 3, Silves 2 Shots off target : Imortal 6, Silves 4 Shots bloicked : Imortal 2, Silves 1 Corners : Imortal 7, Silves 3 Yellow cards : Imortal 3, Silves 2 Red Cards : none |

Yesterday Ferreiras 1 - 0 Imortal I will fill in some details tomorrow, but there won't be a full report as I had to go without notebook and pen. Ferreiras are on a bit of a roll, having beaten both the teams above them in the last two weeks. At the half way point of the first phase (11 games played) the top of the table looks like this : Imortal Albufeira 25 points, Portimonense B 24, Ferreiras 22.

Not much I can add except that Imortal's goalkeeper Froita had much more to do than his counterpart, including on exceptional save from Ferreiras striker Leandro. Imortal's forward pair of Duarte and Tome were well marked. Alves was his usual busy self in midfield, but to no avail. Imortal's task was made more difficult by the 57th minute sending off of captain Pedro Rodrigues for his second yellow card. The ten men tried hard, but their efforts could not break through the well organised defence. Ferreiras thought they had scored after just eight minutes, but the referee's whistle put a stop to celebrations that were well under way. The only goal of the game was scored in the 31st miunute by Edinho Junior, heading in a deep cross on the far post. Imortal team : Froita; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Dragnev, Sousa; Cintra, Coelho, Alves, Tomas Rodrigues; Duarte, Tome. Subs used : Almeida, Rangel, Baldé and Santos. Next game is away at Lagos next Saturday. That's often been an awkward one.

Today - Lagos 2 - 0 Imortal. A host of chances missed, including a penalty put wide, cost Imortal the game. They were all over 'em as they say, but couldn't finish. After eight straight wins, it's now one win five. More on Monday.

LAGOS 2 - 0 IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA
Imortal's woes continue. After seven successive wins, it's now just one win in the last five League matches. The result and others sees Imortal fall to third place, two points behind leaders Portimonense B and level on points with Ferreiras, but below them on head to head record. Despite having almost complete domination in the second half, Imortal were unable to create clear goal-scoring chances. Except for a 75th minute penalty, rather harshly awarded I have to say. Mario Duarte carefully measured his run-up and sent the ball wide of the left hand post, to his horror, that of his team-mates and the numerous Imortal fans in the crowd of about 80. It was inevitable that with Imortal pushing for an equaliser a big boot out of defence could work for Lagos. And so it was on 90 minutes a huge clearance found Lagos two on one in front of the goalkeeper, made easier when the one (Cintra) slipped and presented Moises Antonio with a chance he could not miss. Imortal had to reshuffle the line up, with captain Pedro Rodrigues suspended after his red card last week. Mauro Jose came into the back four. Ricardo Tome (Ruca) was dropped after six games without scoring, replaced by Rangel. There were also rare starts for Almeida and Baldé in place of Tomas Rodrigues and Coelho. Much of the first half was pretty messy. Lagos striker Herlander Tome had a couple of early efforts, one weak and easily saved, the other miles over the bar. Zidnaba almost put Lagos ahead with a skilful turn and shot on the edge of the penalty area, but the ball went straight at Imortal ´keeper Froita. Imortal gradually improved, with Alves doing his usual stuff all over the pitch. The best chance for Imortal came on 33 minutes. A superb pass by Sousa was brilliantly controlled by Alves, his shot was parried by the goalkeeper. The rebound fell to Duarte, his shot was blocked for a corner. Lagos opening goal came from mistakes in midfield by Imortal, trying to pass and pass and not succeeding. The ball was lost, a long range shot was pushed away by Froita only to the feet of Claudio Gomes on the six yard line. He couldn't miss and didn't. There was a response by Imortal, but Rangel and Duarte kept getting in each other's way, going for the same ball. Rangel did get in a good effort though, again the pass was from Alves, but a defender deflected the ball over the crossbar. Muttering at half time among the Imortal faithful. Something big would be needed. Lagos kept everyone waiting, in the Manchester City fashion. The second half eventually kicked off at 16:06! The Lagos captain did get a telling off from the referee. Imortal started fairly well, but there was still too much emphasis on keeping the ball. Passes were going sideways and backwards, rather than towards the other end. Duarte had a half chance, didn't trouble the ´keeper. Alves was once more in the thick of things, once joining the back four to get the ball moving upfield more quickly. But for all the possession, there was no final touch, seemingly no urgency for a goal. Then came the penalty. A dreadful free kick by Dragnev was blocked by the wall. By an arm said the referee. Lagos players and fans disagreed and the usual debate ensued. Eventually Duarte placed the ball on the spot and then put it wide. That was greeted by a mocking outburst from the stadium announcer. Lagos had barely been in Imortal's half, their only effort a tame one by Herlander Tome that was not a problem for Froita. After the penalty miss, the time wasting began in earnest, with every throw being taken by a player at least fifty metres away. Then, just as five minutes added time was announced, came the Lagos route one counter attack and the killer second goal. Imortal team : Froita; Jose, Prates, Sousa, Dragnev; Cintra, Alves, Almeida, Baldé; Rangel, Duarte. Subs used Tomas Rodrigues and Coelho. Match statistics Free kicks conceded : Imortal 8, Lagos 16 plus the penalty Offside : None! Shots on target : Imortal 5; Lagos 4 Shots off target : Imortal 3; Lagos 3 Shots blocked : Imortal 3; Lagos 0 Corners : Imortal 5; Lagos 2 Yellow cards : just the one each, Baldé and Pina in the 65th minute following a pushing and shoving match. Next game for Imortal is the Algarve Cup Second Round tie at home to Silves on Saturday 21st December, ko 1500hrs. They have no game on December 28th. The league resumes on Saturday 4th January when Imortal will be at home to bottom side Moncarpachense B, ko 1500hrs. Some pictures. The stadium is on the edge of town. The teams warming up. The teams line up. Imortal in red. Imortal defence under early pressure. It was too dark later for any more pictures. |

IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 0 - 1 SILVES
Algarve Cup Second Round Another highly frustrating afternoon. Despite having most of the possession and many more goal chances, Imortal fell to a third successive defeat in league and cup. The goals have dried up! They were once again caught out by a big boot upfield when pressing for the equaliser. The first half was, statistically, almost a non-event apart from the twelve free kicks and Silves 38th minute goal. The second half was better, apart from the 22 free kicks the referee deemed necessary. Both teams made changes from the league match three weeks ago. Matheus Bova was rewarded for his many weeks on the bench with a start in goal. He had almost nothing to do the entire game and wasn't at fault for the goal. Pedro Rodrigues was still absent, Duarte took the captain's armband. Silves made wholesale changes, five new faces in the starting lineup compared with the league game. People were still coming in twenty minutes after the kickoff and missed Imortal's first chance, set up by Alves with across that Duarte hit towards goal. That effort was blocked, the rebound fell to Rangel but he stabbed the ball wide from close range. Silves forward Souza had a weak shot on the half hour, one of only two 'saves' Bova had to make. Their goal came shortly afterwards. A good run down the left by Imortal's Dragnev was spoiled when he held onto the ball too long instead of crossing. He lost the ball which was sent miles upfield. It fell kindly to the feet of Souza, haring towards goal. Bova was a little way off his line and could only watch as the perfect shot from 25 metres out sailed high over him and into the net. Imortal made a decent start to the second half, a great cross from Rangel just eluding Duarte and Baldé on the far post. Baldé was putting in some good work down the right, Alves was all over the field as usual, including chasing back into defence to stop a swift breakaway attack. Imortal's Cintra and Silves defender Boonstoppel had a nasty clash of heads, both were down for a while with Cintra needing some patching up. Silves were trying for their second goal, but nothing came of their efforts. Imortal almost went ahead but a super save from Silva denied Sousa's header from a Baldé cross. Immediately Silves defender Machado went down in front of goal, the usual tactic to break up the flow of the game later copied by their goalkeeper. A welcome sight among the substitutes coming on was Mateus Vieira, his first appearance since the second game of the season way back in early October. Imortal had huge shout for a penalty when Baldé was dragged down, nothing doing. Silves were conceding free kicks every 30 seconds it seemed, anything to frustrate Imortal, which it did. There was a decent effort on goal from Dragnev, but it needed only a routine save. Baldé found the head of Duarte with another good cross from the right but the header went straight at the ´keeper. Eight minutes of added time was announced. Alves shot straight at the ´keeper as tempers threatened to boil over. Silves huge Machado was winning every header and kept things under control. Imortal had a corner which he headed clear in the last moment before the final whistle. Where are the goals coming from? Three games without a goal, only three goals scored in the last five games all told, all of which were on that same afternoon in the 3-2 league win over Silves. Also and I don't know if this coincidence or not, Imortal haven't kept a clean sheet since David Inacio was replaced in goal. No game next weekend while the semi-professionals and their clubs have some time off. Next game for Imortal will be on Saturday 4th January, at home to bottom side Moncarpachense B kickoff 1500hrs. That surely is a game that must be won! Imortal are third in the league as it stands and cannot afford to drop more points as the league has only ten more games in the second phase before the split. Imortal team : Bova; Prates, Jose, Cintra, Dragnev; Coelho, Alves, Baldé, Salvador; Duarte, Rangel. Subs used : Tomas Rodrigues, Sousa, Vieira and Santos. Match statistics Free kicks conceded : Imortal 12, Silves 22! Offside Imortal 1, Silves 1 Shots on target : Imortal 4, Silves 2 Shots off target : Imortal 2, Silves 1 Shots blocked : Imortal 3, Silves 1 Corners : Imortal 4, Silves 4 Yellow cards : Imortal 2, Silves 2 Red Cards : none |
