To confirm the final weekend's fixtures for the Algarve League on Saturday :

Championship group

Imortal Albufeira v Ferreiras 1700hrs
Quarteirense v Portimonense B 1700hrs
Silves v FC Os 11 Esperanças 1600hrs

Relegation Group all at 1700hrs

Culatrense v Lagos
Lusitano VRSA v Odiáxere
Moncarapachense B v Olhanense

That will conclude competitive football in the Algarve until the Second Division programme begins on the weekend 15 / 16 August. The National fourth Division (Campeonato de Portugal) will probably start on the first weekend of September and the Algarve League normally starts on the last weekend of September.

LAST WEEKEND OF THE SEASON

The Algarve League season finally came to an end on Saturday. The Championship had already been decided, Portimonense B winning with a game to spare. Quarteirense, the form team in the latter weeks, finished second with Imortal Albufeira third.

In the relegation group, Culatrense and Lusitano VRSA finished as the bottom two and may be relegated. That depends on teams dropping out of the league and the need to balance numbers.

Results

Division One second phase championship group

Imortal Albufeira 1 - 1 Ferreiras
Quarteirense 2 - 1 Portimonense B
Silves 2 - 3 FC 11 Esperanças

Relegation Group

Culatrense 3 - 1 Lagos
Lusitano VRSA 2 - 1 Odiáxere
Moncarpachense B 2 - 1 Olhanense

Os Armancanenses and Louletano B finished as the top two in the Second Division championship group and will be in line for promotion. All that won't be decided until late August or early September, with next season starting either on the 20th or 27th of September.

To sum up the fortunes of the other Algarve teams whose seasons finished earlier, Farense were relegated from the top league, Liga Betclic and will join Portimonense in Liga 2 (Liga Meu Super) for next season.

The three Algarve teams in the fourth tier Campeonato de Portugal retained their status after mediocre seasons. These are Lagoa, Louletano and Moncarapachense.

In women's football, Guia had a good season in national division two and will be there again next season. Ferreiras and SC Olhanense will again play in the third division.

Next season will begin on the weekend of 15 - 17 August for Liga 2, on 10th August for the Campeonato de Portugal.  Their fixtures are only every two weeks during the first months. Why start so early??

The first round of the FA Cup will be the weekend of 30 / 31 August.

The Women's league season will get under way in mid-September.

Clap.... good, early signs that the Portuguese FA have adopted a grain of common sense ..... the two Algarve teams playing at home on alternate weekends. Rarely the case in previous seasons.

Portimaos opener being against Penafiel [whom the poor kid who died, making the news, played for], thus likely to be a memorial pre-match.

The new season is soon upon us with the first matches now confirmed.

The Algarve Super Cup (last season's league winners v last season's Cup winners) will take place on Saturday 2nd August at Ferreiras FC between Portimonense B and Moncarpachense. Admission is free.

The senior leagues get under way the following weekend.

In Liga Meu Super (2nd Division), Portimonense will be at home to Penafiel on Saturday 9th August, ko 1900hrs. Farense will be away.

In the Campeonato de Portugal (4th Division) group D all games will be on Sunday 10th, ko 1700hrs. Games involving the Algarve teams :-

Louletano v Portimonense B ko 1700hrs at the Algarve Stadium
Lagoa v Sintrense ko 1700hrs

Moncarpachense travel up to Alverca, near Lisbon.

The Algarve League does not start until late September, but some teams will be involved in the first round of the FA Cup, scheduled for the weekend of 30th and 31st August.

I am not looking for pre season matches involving most local teams. They are often arranged at short notice and may be played behind closed doors. I will try to find those involving Imortal Albufeira, but this is difficult as they only post on Facebook and I do not do Facebook. Any information gratefully received! I have found only one so far.

PORTUGAL FA CUP 1st and 2nd ROUND TIES FOR ALGARVE TEAMS

First of all, Imortal do not feature in the FA Cup, for reasons I know not. It was understood that they would, finishing third in the Algarve League. Silves qualify by virtue of being runners-up in the Algarve Cup. The winners, Moncarapachense, automatically qualified by being the 4th Division, Campeonato de Portugal. Quarteirense finished second in the Algarve League and thus qualify. In Portugal, most teams below the top four tiers are excluded from the FA Cup.

That means that the competitive season for Imortal will not begin until the Algarve League gets under way on 27th September.

The first round draw has not been kind to the Algarve. Only Moncarpachense will be at home, to Sporting Viana from up in the Alentejo. Lagoa face a trip to Vidigueira, while Quarteirense go to Castro Verde to play Castrense. Those matches will be played over the weekend of 30 / 31 August.

In the second round, Louletano will be at home to Opérario from Lisbon, Silves host Oliveira de Hospital and Portimonense B face Penafiel from Liga 2. Portimonense's first team face Penafiel in their first league match this weekend.

Farense travel way up north to a regional team by the name of Vidago and Portimonense have a not so long trip, to Vítoria Sernache, a regional league team near Serta.

Other ties

São João Ver vs Vidigueira or Lagoa. A long trip up to near Aveiro for Lagoa.
Quarteirense if they win will be at home to Lusitânia Lourosa FC (Liga 2)

Second round ties will be played over the weekend of 20th / 21st September

Liga Meu Super

Benfica B 1 - 2 Portimonense  att.1020.
Farense 0 - 2 Marítimo att. 1807

Strange goings on in the Portimonense game! They had two goalkeepers sent off in the space of five minutes just before half-time. I haven't yetfound any video highlights, but starting goalkeeper Cibois saw red on 43 minutes and fourminutes later his replacement Friedrich joined him. The score was 1-1 at the time. Portimonense played the whole of the second half with nine men and grabbed a winner on 78 minutes.

Portimonense are 7th, they have 7 points their four games. Farense are 14th with 4 points.

No games in this league next weekend because of the Internationals.

Lower league teams were involved in the first round of the FA Cup.

Vasco de Gama Vidigueira 2 - 1 Lagoa
Moncarapachense 3 - 0 Viana Alentejo
Castrense 1 - 0 Quarteirense

The second round is scheduled for the weekend of 20 / 21 September. Moncarpachense will be joined by Silves, Louletano and Portimonenese B who had byes.

The only game in the Campeonato de Portugal next weekend will be Lagoa v Louletano on Sunday at 1500hrs.
