The toponym of Albufeira comes from the Arabic name 'Al-Buhera' which means 'Castle of the Sea', reason which could be linked to the proximity of the ocean and/or the lagoon which was formed in the lower part of the town. When D. Afonso III occupied the throne, part of the Algarve had already fallen to the Christians. Templars and 'Hospitalários', military orders that helped in the reconquest, often jumped over the lands that were still under Arab rule, but always stopped in front of the strong walls of Albufeira. Only after the takeover of Faro did the situation of Albufeira become unsustainable. Surrounded by enemies on all sides, the square fell into the power of D. Afonso III, who immediately donated it to the Order of Aviz. The Moors were persecuted in such a way that only those who fled and took refuge in a cave, called Cova do Xorino, located under the rocks bordering the city on the south side, escaped the wrath of the victors. During the reign of Manuel I, the town had already regained its former importance, as this monarch granted it a charter on 20 August 1504. In the first decades of the 20th century, there was a sharp increase in fish and dried fruit exports. The village had five factories employing 700 to 800 people, mainly women fishermen. At the beginning of the 60's, the tourist phenomenon was born, Albufeira was sought by national tourists, but it was mainly with the arrival of English tourists that it prospered and became internationally famous. In the 80's, there was a huge urban surge, and the city grew to the east, where most of the administrative services were transferred, including the City Hall.
