We had SARS-Covid outbreaks in 2002 and 2004 with no vaccine ever developed ... not surprising when the normal flu vaccine only covers a small (predicted) range of those viruses. Researchers in Australia have concluded that `low` Covid infection patches can be attributed to the BCG (Tuberculosis) national vaccine programmes giving stronger resistance to lung infection ... but they will not release final results because millions of doses are needed routinely throughout the world and higher demand would severely disrupt that for the weakest countries. Black people and women are definitely more susceptible ..

These above are not the only ones looking for a vaccine .. a joint venture has been announced between Glaxo-Smith-Kline (Beechams) and the French Sanofi multi-national ... will there be a powder in the pipeline (tunnel) .. ?

The cold is a coronavirus. To my knowledge no-one has yet found a vaccine for it, or a complete one for the flu.
The flu mutates every year. I wonder why the various research groups are so sure covid 19 will be different.
It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear. Douglas Adams

Hi cubsur i think it matters yes. With SARS it was contained very quickly this new corinavirus is a bit more out of control so would be nice if they find something to stop the virus on its tracks at least to stop a deadly second wave the sooner they do the sooner we can get back to normal. In the meantime stay safe everyone.

Well for sure one consequence of this episode is that 'normal' life will not resume for many weeks yet, if ever. Let us hope that the gradual steps being taken here from 2nd May will improve the general lot of the people.

Hi Pyrman yes mutations on the virus can always be a problem but the vaccine is designed to insert strong ammount of antibodies that deal with different strains of the virus,we sahll see if the work is successful or not in a few months time. As for Portugal re-opening business well people cannot live in lockdown forever there will be new rules,i think it will be interesting to see how they will manage the ammount of people going to the beach... But i for one suspect that the virus will be less and less contagious as the time go by might be wishful thinking but looking at different pandemics throughout the years that is what happened...
In the meantime stay safe everyone hopefully sooner rather than later we will be able to enjoy life as we always have.

Hi Jayjan hope you and the family are doing well. Yes still working at the biggest hotel in Manchester Smile
I did read the interview of Mr Costa in the Expresso newspaper i hope all goes to plan, people cannot live on lockdown forever. I may add as well that there are plenty of studies and trains going on with antiviral drugs against this illness maybe they come up with something that stops the virus on its tracks even before the vaccine...
I hope the situation here in the UK get much better soon. Too many people dying and suffering at the hands of this virus.
Stay safe everyone

Checked jayjan's first link, indeed it doesn't work.

Going out for a drink or meal, when that is permitted, will be interesting if wearing of masks is to be made compulsory.

In the future, can we  look forward to a 'no-contact' regime which rules out many of the most popular sports for example. Will airlines be able to afford to operate aircraft at a maximum 2/3rds capacity or how much can prices rise to compensate? You won't even be able to get into a lift except by yourself.

Luis I'm sure I read they will be supposedly  policing the smaller beaches, but larger beaches is another thing as always someone will  abuse the law.

BTW  Luis hope you and yours are ok too  and you're  still working  at the biggest hotel in Manchester, wow long time now. Hope you havn't got any problems there  regarding this crisis. Lips sealed lol. Stay safe.

Hi Jayjan, problems are everywhere lack of PPE and the envirnoment as you expect is a great ground for the virus to spread we do what we can really but it is hard...
As for the beaches in Portugal the problem is that there is a vast ammount of coast and will be impossible like you said to keep everything under check we just hope that by then the virus will be present in really low levels. I was reading a study presented by an Israeli scientist who claimed that the virus regardless of the measures put in place by individual Countris peaks at around 8 weeks from the 1st transmission and then starts to wane from then on,let's hope he is right!

Mmmm... Limiting the number of people on the beaches this summer, that could be some exercise, assuming the tourists get there in the first place of course.
