and the mass gathering of 16,500 people at the communist parties Fiesta Avante over last weekend in the Lisbon area won't have helped the figures of positive tests to rise.

More restrictions on daily life coming in next Tuesday. Posted elsewhere by me : The wording of the new law is slightly ambiguous to me, but does suggest that it means that alcohol cannot be served without food after 8pm and that there is no mayoral discretion. That will effectively mean bars that do not offer food must close at 8pm. It seems as if we shall have to make the most of the weekend to come, as it will no longer be possible after Monday to go to a bar in the evenings to watch the football. The other wording may mean that shopping centres etc may not open before 1000am (ie once children are in school) and may have to close earlier than the usual 9 or 10pm. A guess of course as to how long this latest set of restrictions will last. |

Cubsur - Is there any news from Albufeira council regarding the latest restrictions?
Bar owners we have spoken to over the last few days seem to think they will be able to serve plates of nuts etc to get around the 8pm closing rule. |

It's just been announced that bars must close at 11pm as from tonight. Apparently restaurants serving food can stay open until 1am (but who would!) and there is still some ambiguity about those places that may have a restaurant licence that have no intention whatsoever of offering food in the evenings. There are also some new restrictions about certain places, mainly retail stores, that must not open before 1000am. The full text of the official announcement, which is only in Portuguese, can be seen at The end part contains the 'buts' and that establishments can request an exemption. These new rules seem to be in line with the loosest of national 'guidelines' indeed the mayor is quoted saying we are not changing anything.

We were out in the Old Town last night and the bars remained open until 1am. Nobody seemed to be really aware of what had been agreed.

True said above. Where I was last night the owner had phoned the GNR to ask them what they thought the rules were! Anyway, no-one came in at 8pm demanding he closed and when I left at 1030 it was pretty much business as usual around the old town, although I did spot two separate GNR patrols.

Not yet but maybe it has something to do with this: At least 67 young Belgians infected after holidays in Albufeira
Lusa At least 67 Belgian youths, between 18 and 20 years old, are infected with covid-19 after returning from vacation in Albufeira earlier this month, being in isolation from home in Belgium, the authorities announced this Wednesday. The news was given by the governor of the province of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwé, who, quoted by the Belgian press, says that young people were infected on vacation in the Algarve between the 2nd and the 12th of September. About half of these 67 infected young people - who are in isolation from home - took part in a stay organized by the Belgian tour operator Summer Bash, specializing in trips for young people between 16 and 24 years old, while the rest rented a private home for their holidays. According to Carl Decaluwé, “the number of young people infected is expected to increase”, as the Belgian authorities have not yet been able to trace all contacts of those who tested positive for covid-19. Altogether, 130 young Belgians spent their first holiday in Portugal with the tour operator Summer Bash, with the company recommending testing and quarantine |

Omg ! That’s absolutely ridiculous, why are companies still running huge groups to party like the virus does not exist ! And why are the hotels etc allowing those large groups to book ! As with everywhere else the younger, invincible, are now becoming Typhoid Marys en masse !

Ridiculous yes but why? It's all about money/economy, Portugal needs tourist according to the government, the government doesn't want to scare tourist with tests, everybody is welcome, the Algarve is save and so on. This is the price you pay for keeping everything open but, maybe these Belgium kids weren't the cause, could be another football club like in Loulé, probably there will be something on the Portugal news at 20:00 or tomorrow in the papers...

Official sources are no longer publishing a detailed breakdown of locations related to new cases, at least that I can find. The overall numbers are so tiny (around 0.5% of the region's population) in relation to the population that it barely matters where. It was never very clear whether the case location logged related to home, workplace or where it was diagnosed. There is a map at https://covid19.min-saude.pt/ponto-de-situacao-atual-em-portugal/ showing where cases have been logged. As of yesterday Albufeira district had registered 204 in the six months. That's about the average, i.e 0.49% of the population. Therefore 99.51% of the town's population has not been affected. That is the number people should be taking notice of. This is not plague or the Black Death.
