just found this website through a facebook posting, re 3 options for TV programmes once the satellite is in service,
www.algarve-tv.com/index.php/en EDIT: the only downfall re the free intelsat is quoted re biss keys: of course we will supply you with the BISS code on setup of the receiver(s) and we will supply you with instructions on how to change that code. However, if the code changes, you will need to do that yourself. This BISS code has not changed often in the past, and when the code did change the new code was usually available on the internet within a few days. However, be aware that we cannot guarantee that this code will always be available. So we are completely honest here. If the BISS code changes and it will not be posted on the Internet, or if this backup system is abandoned or changed, your investment in this system will be lost. |

All sounds a bit dodgy and very expensive to me.
If the BBC etc are so keen on not allowing their programs to be seen where they have no right to broadcast then it follows that the BBC etc will do everything they can to prevent other illegal methods of watching them. And if changing the Biss keys, whatever they are, does that job then I suspect they might get changed a bit more frequently in the future. Personally, I would be very wary of parting with hard earned cash for any of these alternative systems until I knew exactly what happens to the current satellite channels and until I was 100% certain that the alternatives being offered actually work, and if they will continue to work in the future. I have my doubts. |

Thanks Jayjan, As we expected due to the bad weather yesterday am we had no satellite signal at all. However when the weather improved yesterday afternoon we found we had lost the majority of our Sky HD and a lot of other Sky channels. When we check the signal strength it shows that these channels are getting no signal, which seems strange as we are getting channels either side of ones we appear to have lost, with no change in their signal strength (weird). We were beginning to worry that this was the beginning of the end .....

If your missing channels don't reappear and no one else reports a problem it may be your LNB (the bit that sticks out in front of your dish).
All channels are either horizontal or vertical polarization so if the LNB did not switch for whatever reason you would lose all those on that polarity.
It would also seem likely that SKY are doing some testing or aligning of the new Sat so don't jump to something being faulty too quickly and keep us posted on developements.
Orada-Girl is panicing about the loss of her soaps when we return for New Year.

To quote 'When we check the signal strength it shows that these channels are getting no signal, which seems strange as we are getting channels either side of ones we appear to have lost, with no change in their signal strength (weird). '
When you check signal strength it is for the whole system and not any particular channel. The fact that a channel, one up or one down from a viewable channel, is not viewable is irrelevant. The channel numbers do not correspond to the frequency of these channels. ie 101 could have a frequency of 2 and 102 could have a frequency of 8 and 103 could have a frequency of 4 etc. Have the channels come back yet?

Sorry but that's not so - on most UK boxes (Sky, Freeview, Freesat) the signal strength test applies only to the channel you are tuned into to and not to the whole system. If I check my channels in the UK, where I have both Freeview & Freesat, then it shows a different signal strength for each individual channel. The strengths vary depending on which group of broadcasters the channel is transmitted by - BBC, ITV, C4 etc |

We have changed over from our HD box to an older non HD Sky box. Signal strength and quality has dropped dramatically from what we usually receive but we are now getting some of the channels that the HD box wasn't picking up. Sky Livingit, CBS, TLC, RTE, FOX, SKY Atlantic, etc have gone .... but we have no problems getting BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 ITV2 ITV3 ITV4 SKY1 and Sky2 but no Documentary channels (so thats good news at least).
It would appear that the older Sky box is better at picking up a weak signal. The question I suppose is what has caused the signal strength and quality to reduce? Is it a problem with our dish? Has anyone else noticed a reduction in signal strength in the Albufeira area?

the strengh of your channel will vary ,they are not all on the same
transponder.some transponders are stronger than others .there are 127 transponders on my uk box ,each having various channels on them. we had a strom here in manchester yesterday evening and most of the sat went off , channel 4 stayed on all the time ,this would have been on a strong transponder.your signal strength will be your transponder strength .bbc and itv are on different transponders |
