I hope once the virus has passed us all by these buildings will be completed and not left as an eyesore like last time. The property market will no doubt take time to recover from this.

Good point. Work was ongoing at Finisterre when I passed by last Friday also at the luxury build site opposite the Câmara, but has stopped at several other locations. If potential buyers pull out and cash flow dries up, we could well have more eyesores around town. Thinking of which, time for another walk around Oceanville! Maybe Thursday after the rain has passed.

There are going to be a lot of property developers out of pocket methinks.

I was told developers can merely return the properties to the Bank and carry on trading hence the number of Bank owned properties at the last downturn. The Banks then take the loss and developer keeps the worthwhile properties. Lets hope it doesn't come to this.

Or in this case, doesn't. Quinta da Bolota, on the hill across the road from Eden Resort, pictures taken Thursday morning 2nd April. Click to see the big picture. The site was terraced, roads laid out, services installed but not a brick was ever laid. There has been noticeable subsidence over the past 10 years or so since it was abandoned. Down below, a pool at Albufeira Camping. Deserted now of course, but what might have been. Des. Res. on top of another hill There is a lot of work going on at Eden Resort. |

I can add these to the new builds list. In Travessa dos Oceanos, not far from the escalators, is 'Beach View' although you need remarkable powers of vision to see any beach from it. Several of the apartments face inland and have a wonderful view of the wall of the children's place opposite. And a few yards down the hill still under construction, Apartamentos do Cerro. That's a name that will confuse many! |

I notice the bricks have a lot of air space in them. Does anyone know if this for thermal insulation or to reduce weight?

It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear. Douglas Adams

The standard brick type here. I am fairly certain it is mainly to reduce weight. Steel frames are the load bearing elements, the bricks just fill in the spaces. They will be covered with a layer of concrete, which will then be painted. Looks nice when finished, but no substance. There should be a double wall with cavity for some degree of insulation. I found a slightly learned paper on the evolution of Portuguese construction techniques, in English, at https://www.irbnet.de/daten/iconda/CIB11011.pdf Talks about different types of brick and building techniques, with mention of the problems associated with poor project management and low quality workmanship.
