It's just the nitrogen cycle... in most inland lakes this gets stabilised after a few cycles.
Given the location of this lake, it suffers drought, salt water invasion, storm... et all, ie. one extreme to the other in weeks, never mind years, so the natural nitrogen cycle never gets chance to balance, long term...
Give mother nature a fair crack and it will balance, give her an unfair crack, she'll still sort in time but you'll see these various repeated conditions of the cycle on the various attempts to sort/balance. It's just nature, and nature will out.

Thanks Andrew. Never realised it was such a complex system.

that's what keeping koi carp does to you Tom, you quickly learn that to do it at all with any degree of success you first have to be a water keeper, so the nitrogen cycle is one of the very first things you need to learn about.. Sad eh?

Hi

Is there a part of the nudist beach that caters for straights?

I recall reading that small area is gay men only.

So far as I recall from previous Q&A here and elsewhere, the only offiicial nudist beach in the Algarve is on the Praia do Barril on the Ilha de Tavira.

The first time we encountered this area of the beach we only saw males, every time since it's male and female, all ages, and probably more females.
It would seem to be just an area where nudism is permitted or tolerated, whatever your gender, and it must be well known from the sheer numbers that partake.

There is a small number of men on their own but we tend to ignore them when they get to close or "pervy",so we usually use the spots about 500 yards from where the boardwalk ends from the beach cafe(carlos bar) there is a more mixed group of male & female sunbathers there

The lagoon on Wednesday afternoon. The water is still pretty green.

The recent rains have filled up the lagoon nicely and the water is no longer green. I took a ride around there this afternoon. Here are a couple of samples. I will do the rest later.

Plenty of others were enjoying a nice walk around there. It is a popular area and rather  pleasant f you can ignore the hammaering and bashing from the hideous Salgados development across the water.

It's a couple of months since I have been over that way. Took the bike out this afternoon. The recent prolonged dry spell has left the lagoon looking decidedly dry

It looks better from the other end.

A group of seagulls and moorhens were having big squabble under the bridge at the end of the boardwalk.
