Subject: Major drain work - road closures Cerro Grande area

Work has started on the construction of a new storm drain through the Cerro Grande area. Several roads are closed or partially closed. Traffic and buses diverted all over the place.

Particularly affected are Rua 1 Dezembro and Rua Samora Barros, both closed off at the roundabout end. Avenida do Ténis is partly closed in the same area. I will get some pictures and perhaps some more detail as soon as I can.

Here's the details of the current phase, expected to last until early December. The Avenida do Ténis closed southbound from just below the traffic lights and past the roundabout. The little road down from the Jardim direction is also blocked off. Map below shows. Rua Samora Barros and Rua 1 Dezembro not affected thus far. Giro buses 2,3 and 8 diverted.

Utterly useless diversion signing as always. If you are unfamiliar with the area you dont stand a chance. If you wish to get to the Old Cemetery area from the dual carriageway there is no signing whatsoever to tell you how to achieve this. Disgraceful.

There is nothing at the traffic lights to tell that there is no way down the Avenida do Ténis.  The only sign is when you get to the blockage, which sends you back the way you came. It is not necessary to inform the public. It costs money to put up signs.

The bus company has put a sign on the stop outside the school in Avenida do Ténis announcing the closure and advising the alternative stop on the main road, but the other stop just before the roundabout has been taken out of service by the simple expedient of physically removing it.

The pipes have been laid and the trench is now being filled in before they move down to the next section by the school. A bit wet in there after all that rain!

Slowly, slowly, the pavements and roads are being rebuilt. There were even half a dozen blokes working on a Sunday, laying down the little stones. It is still hard going in some parts. The roads that were closed a month ago (see above) remain closed to all traffic. Buses are diverted, cars and taxis have to go a long way around.

Slowly, slowly, getting there. Pavements are re-appearing and road rollers are flattening out the surface. The road down past the old cemetery is still a bit of a state. Cannot see completion any time soon.

Our friend who has a business there says that there had only been 3/4 men working there but at the start of the week 11 men appeared and it's all systems go. She understands it was due to be completed by the end of the month and they have had an ultimatum from the council.

Pictures from Sunday. Much of the stockpile of materiel has gone, the pavements are mostly complete but as I said a lot of work still to be done on the road surface. I passed by on a bus earlier today. Road rollers were busy flattening things out. Note the tactile strips where crossings will be painted.

Hooray! The Avenida do Ténis is now open all the way from the roundabout past the school to the bottom. The side streets are open also, except the Rua Dr Diogo Leote, which is the one that goes down towards the old Mansion. Some work to be done on the pavements, so be careful. Still plenty going on further down. Pictures to follow.
