My 72 year old wife of 48 years and I have visited Albufeira too many times to remember. (over 60 at least). Our last visit was January 2020 and our planned visits in May and October that year were cancelled and Travel Republic returned every penny we had paid back to us. Thanks TR. We are both optimistic people and have decided to book three holidays to Albufeira in 2022. My question to anyone who can help is as follows:- What tests do we need and how do we get them? Please give a comprehensive answer as if I am an idiot (which clearly I am). We just want to look forward to eating in restaurants such as The Hollandaise, Uzone, The Praia da Falesia (Hi Paula), Fat Cats, Johnny Hooper's and even a quick meal in the café at Pingo Doce. We want to stroll down the beach to the old town, I want to sit behind Cubsur (He doesn't know I am there) and watch Imortal sneak a draw, meet a few old Algarve friends that we only know their first names. Travel on the tourist train. Going to the old town of an evening and having one too many and getting a taxi back home. Staying in the Tropical Sol, Cantinha, Eirasol or any hotel who will take us. Watching half-witted people travelling in a tuctuc. Having a coffee in the Solcafe and a catch up with Lewis. Albufeira we miss you. ------------- Ally |

As of next week you still need a negative test to enter Portugal but this is likely to change within 4-6 weeks and most likely no test needed and just a proof of vaccination - today its announced no new measures over here and a lessening of existing measures so things look hopeful. To fly back to UK no test needed but within 2 days you must do a lateral flow test which I believe has to be prebooked so the test number can go on your passenger locator form. You do not have to isolate while you await the test result and if positive then you have to do a pcr test. Ask again in a few weeks to see how our rules may have changed. -------------

Super_Ally, your plans sound wonderful! And much the same as mine! I, too, hope to visit later in the summer... but, alas, for only a short visit! I look forward to the day when I can visit for a couple of months or more! I'm sorry, I can't help with your question - but looks like peteknopp gave you lots of info... but, I would agree with him that you'll need to check again closer to your travel dates. Things change so quickly! Enjoy your trip!

No test now required before boarding return flight to Scotland but, as said, those who know best can easily change the rules at 48 hours of notice as they have just done. At the moment UK governments require you to pre book a test post arrival the details of which go on your paperwork. Hi Ally, As usual Pete has it bang on. Just one point worth mentioning is that Portugal do not accept self administered tests, so your test has to be done by a health care professional. You can have either a PCR test within 72 hours of your flight or a Lateral flow test within 48 hours of your flight. Most people will opt for a Lateral Flow test because it's cheaper and faster. With a lateral flow test you can get the results after just an hour so lots of testing companies offer them at the airports. To do it that way you'll need an email account and some form of mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet to receive the results and just show it on your screen to the airport people. If you are not comfortable with all that faffing, then best to do it in advance and get it printed out at home before you travel. The requirements could change by the time you fly so check here for upto date rules http://https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ugal/entry-requirements - http://https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/portugal/entry-requirements Best way to find a tester is just to search google for "Covid Fit To Fly tests near me" If you fly with Ryanair they have a deal with a company called Randox who give a £10 discount if you enter the code FLYRYANAIR. On The way back as Pete says you'll need a pre booked Lateral Flow test to be taken within 48 hours of arriving in UK. You need the booking number to enter on your Passenger Locator Form, which you have to fill in online. http://https://provide-journey-contact-details.homeoffice.gov.uk/passengerLocatorUserAccountHolderQuestion - http://https://provide-journey-contact-details.homeoffice.gov.uk/passengerLocatorFormUserAccountHolderQuestion You need to quarantine until you get a negative test result, so the sooner you have the test the better. You can have these at the airport as soon as you arrive and get the results guaranteed the next day. If you are unlucky enough to be positive on that test then you need to self isolate for 10 days. The UK government website states (for those ariving in UK and fully vaccinated) "From 4am 9 January you can take a lateral flow test instead of a PCR test. If the result of the lateral flow test is positive, you must self-isolate and take a PCR test." The inference (repeated in all the media) is that there is no isolation until you get your result. But how do you take a PCR test if you are not allowed out of the front door? I might need to know is a month's time. Portugal has extended the compulsory negative test for all arrivals until at least 23rd January.
