Is there some antipathy between natives of the Algarve and Northern Portuguese? A thread in the TA forum mentions that O Jorge closes in August to avoid visitors from the north. I believe O Jorge open this August from something I saw elsewhere. Folk in the Algarve resent holiday makers taking up tables but not spending very much money - mainly applies to Northern visitors and Spanish who come away with everything but the kitchen sink in order to save money. A few years ago I saw folk emptying out the car of all their cases etc and out came a 20kg sack of spuds! -------------

What Pete said - six people taking up space for nine with three drinks between them. Plus other things are, eight people and their dog renting a one bed apartment - even bringing a mattress with them in their van. The entire family walking side by side taking up the whole pavement, then tutting and moaning when the have to move to let someone going in the other direction pass - the solution to that, I have found, is to stand still and let them part around you. Two people and two kids sharing one meal in a restaurant. And a general rudeness and looking down their noses at Algarvians.

By sheer co-incidence a Portuguese friend wrote this on his Facebook timeline overnight - I have copied it verbatim as facebook translated it, but you will get the gist. But if you come to Hellgarve for a vacation; Don't order coffees and a glass of tap water "when they're in the Bars. Try to understand" this is a business like everything else in life. And then I got hearing from the Portuguese themselves, the Portuguese are the worst customers there are. I am Portuguese with great pride-but have some sensitivity in consumption k do, mainly here in ALBUFEIRA. ..All have the same right. Some time ago I was having a long chat to someone born and raised in Lisbon. He told me that Northern Portuguese look down on Algarvians to some degree and that they are regarded as being 'rougher' and that they don't speak 'proper' Portuguese. (his words not mine) I can't comment as I wouldn't know if this is true or not.
