New water mains are being laid. The bottom end near the statue is closed. Cars are diverted around by Merlin's Bar into the old town and then along Rua de Outubro.

Local buses, the red bus tour and tourist transfer coaches cannot go that way so the stop by the statue is not being used. Also the stop on Rua Coronel Aguas near the Rocamar hotel is also out of use. Nearest alternative bus stop for GIRO is up the road in Avenida do Ténis by the roundabout.

No idea how long this will last but it is a big trench!

Thats more like Storm Drains than a water main.

Date Posted: 14/December/2018 at 14:20
Yeah, a water main, as in drinking water would normally be blue pipe. Black for waste/foul.

The sign definitely says 'abastimento' not 'esgotos'. Work is is going to last well into January I was told by a man in a hole.

There were three JCB type vehicles parked up. I shall make a point of walking that way later on my way to Continente.

This morning. Not exactly a hive of activity, but the big yellow one was backfilling the top end of the main trench while two blokes were discussing what to do at the other end. Seems they have broken a water pipe in one place. The big black one is definitely a dran and there are all sorts being laid alongside.

The green is a cable duct used for Broadband or Fibre Optic cable. Black coil could be general purpose duct or a small diameter water main is there is a blue stripe on it. Ah the world of plastic pipe, such fun!Ermm

Didn't this road get re surfaced a couple of years ago ?

Posted By: cubsur
Date Posted: 21/January/2019 at 09:37
Probably! But the drains badly needed replacing after the most recent flooding. A big project is under way at that end of town to dig a big new interceptor tunnel and repair others. The object being to reduce the flow of surface water down the steep hills, which obviously isn't good for the lower parts.

During the roadworks, I now know that GIRO Linha Vermelha 2 is not serving the stops outside the Boavista Hotel, at the old Cemetery and Rua Coronal Aguas. Instead it is going direct from Jardim 1 to the stop in Avenide do Ténis. It will appear at that latter stop about 2 minute earlier than 'usual'.  This has of course not been announced in any way I have seen.

So far as I know Linha Vermelha 1 is still making the double circuit to stop at the Boavista and Cemetery but nothing stopping at Rua Coronal Aguas.

True regarding 2.

Regarding 1, it does still stop at Boa Vista but not sure where it goes after that. Think it might go down to the Marina but not sure. It certainly can’t go up the blocked road or the one way street past the school.

"Think it might go down to the Marina but not sur"

It does, or did anyway! After Boavista it stops at the old cemetery as usual, turns down the hill all the way to the marina, back up the main road to the Dolpins, past Jardim 1 for a second time before cutting through that narrow little street just beyond and back onto the normal route at the Avenida do Tênis stop.

A bit off topic I'm afraid. Why does the Camara persist with calcadas on pavements where there is the chance to replace them with something quicker to lay and safer to walk on - perhaps tarmac or slabs?

They tried slabs in some places but they got very slippery when wet. I have the feeling that the calçada is part of the 'heritage'. Also the loose lay does allow a certain amount of rain to drain through rather than rush down the hills.

Some bits had an anti-skid surface laid but that's been worn away now.

But definitely a trip hazard!

After staying in Castro Marim we'll be in this area of the old town Albufeira in about 3 weeks. It would be nice to think the work would be complete by then, but I doubt it.

Yesterday they were busy with 3 men to put the Stones in it and a piece of asphalt is still
needs to be paved.
The pavements along the asphalt must also be repaired....

Gradually taking shape. These photos from Monday afternoon. The pavement on one side is  almost complete. The pavements will be about twice the width of the old ones and the road only 3.5 metres wide. Which means of course residents will have to park on them, so no advantage for pedestrians.

They are happily pottering away, must be on daily rate and finish. The pavements are almost complete down both sides. No sign of any road surface going down.

Only two months behind schedule.

As of yesterday they have about 60 metres of paving left to do. It's cobblestones, which will do wonders for car and bus suspensions.

There were men actually working on it on Sunday. Nice bit of overtime for us taxpayers to weigh out on after seven months of work on a single 200m long street. Clearly getting a move onto impress the non-spending Portuguese from the north as they turn up over the next few weeks...

Why non spending? Do they turn up with the car full of everything they need?  I've seen that on Greek islands.  Doesn't do much for the local economy.

Tom,
The EVA bus is using that route if that helps you but it would appear they, the authorities, haven’t put the no parking lines etc down yet as it’s being used as a free car parking area and the EVA bus two days ago couldn’t negotiate the bottom corner because of stupidly parked cars.
You couldn’t make it up!

Update: Bus Stop now marked on the road. Barriers up opposite the bus stop, next to the taxi rank to prevent parking there.

In other news - as always in August parking laws everywhere else seem to have gone out of the window if you come from France/Spain/Northern Portugal...
