Spotted yesterday that 'Big John's', the large tourist bar down near the pier is closed and the premises for sale.

Also closed and for sale is the restaurant Catedral do Bacalhau at the Quinta da Balaia roundabout.

What a shame. One of the bars we always visited. Never seemed busy though.

Never had much atmosphere after Steve and Anne-Marie left and they turned it into another bar that looked just like the rest. Might well have been a huge rent hike in light of the big increase in tourism as well? Goldmine for someone with the imagination and wherewithal to make it the right kind of venue.

I don't know the ladies name that worked there it may have been Anne Marie. But seem to remember seeing her working in another bar last time we were there.

Despite the still very quiet north strip, a couple of new restaurants are opened just up from
the crossing .

The only Big Johns bar I know is the one Tom is talking about on Fishermans beach. Stand at the bottom of the escalator and it's at 45 degrees to your left...

Big John's was on the corner of the big white building on the right hand side of the picture. Which was taken last summer by the way!

Big Johns had live bands around 4 in the afternoon, a good crowd used to gather on the steps to listen, just wonder how many actually bought a drink................

I recall that bar had a banner up saying “Run by a Jock and a Cockney”, or similar, presumably one of them was Big John?
