The fallout from last Saturday's fracas is rather less than I expected. Imortal's Herlander Tome has a 1 match suspension, while one of the Silves players as a two match ban, another just the one. Imortal were mysteriously fined €15 for "Irregularidade na formação das equipas de agentes de segurança."

Four armed GNR perhaps insufficient to keep order among the 150 so present!

Irregularity in the training of security agent teams.

Probably a barb aimed at Imortals own yellow jacket squad? Maybe not quite up to the job when it kicked off, Tom.

Yesterday : Quarteirense 2 - 1 Imortal

I was unable to go owing toi the absence of buses back from Quarteira on Saturday evenings.

Other important results were Portimonense B 3 - 0 Silves and Ferreiras 2 - 2  Os 11 Esperanças.

Imortal are still top, but now only 1 point ahead of Portimonense B and two ahead of Ferreiras.

Next Saturday Imortal will be at home to Portimonense B, ko probably at 1600hrs but check in cae of late change.

A bit more about Saturday's game. It was played on the second, artificial, pitch at Quarteiras, presumably because the main piutch was unfit. Glad I didn't go. Awful place.

Anyway, Tiago Sousa, in his first game since 11th January, replaced Herlander Tome (suspended) and Coelho replaced Vieira, otherwise the team was as the previous game. Quarteirense took a very early lead, it was 1-0 at half time. They increased their lead on 65 minutes. Mario Duarte pulled one back for Imortal on 81 minutes but they failed to gain what would have been a useful equaliser. The radio commentary left a lot to be desired!

Imortal team : Inacio; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnez; Cintra, Coelho, Alves, António; Sousa, Duarte. Subs used Tómas Rodrigues, Vieira, Baldé, Santos, Martins. Two yellow cards - Pedro Rodrigues and Jose.

Duarte is the league's top scorer, with 19 goals in 25 games.

Next for Imortal is a must win home game against Portimonense B on Saturday 12th April, ko 1600hrs / 4pm.

Very disappointing today in front of a good crowd.

Imortal 1 - 2 Portimonense B

Report on Monday. Ferreiras won at Silves, so the top of the table after four of the ten second phase games looks like this. Points were carried forward but not goals.

Portimonense 56pts GD +5
Ferreiras 55pts GD +1
Imortal 54pts GD +1

All is not lost but the next game for Imortal, away to Ferreiras, will be crucial. A reminder now that the Algarve League does not play over Easter. The next games will be on Saturday 26th April.

PS the fine mentioned above for 'irregularities of the security team' was rescinded.

IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 1 - 2 PORTIMONENSE B

A very disappointing outcome in front of a good crowd. Imortal played well in the build-up, creating many scoring chances, but the final touch was missing. In a frantic finale, the crossbar was rattled, headers and overhead kicks went just wide. All is not lost, but Imortal really do need to win their next game, at Ferreiras on 26th April.

There was one change in the line-up. Herlander Tome returned after a one match suspension. Mauro Jose dropped to the bench, with Tiago Sousa moving into the back four. Whether or not that change to the established defence caused the problem, I don't know, but twice Imortal were caught by swift counter-attacks and were twice punished with well taken goals.

A good crowd was in, including a fair few from Portimão and a boisterous but good natured group of about two dozen lads on a stag weekend. They appreciated the skills of Walter Alves, who did his best to torment the opposition, who did get rather physical as he twisted and turned around them. They also appreciated a bit of retaliation, for which he was lucky not to be booked.

The early minutes were very cagey. The first effort on goals didn't come until 15 minutes in. Imortal won a  corner, which Duarte headed wide. Imortal had a lot of the ball as the half  went on, Portimonense resorted to shirt pulling, which earned them two yellow cards . The first indication of a threat from the visitors counter-attack came on 27 minutes but, fortunately for Imortal, Guilherme Costa blazed his shot way over the bar.

Imortal responded. Good work in midfield by Alves set up Dragnev for a cross from the left but it was too high.

Then came the second counter-attack and the first goal. Imortal lost the ball deep inside the Portimonense half. A hefty clearance found João Marques on the half way line. He sped off towards the Imortal goal, pursued by Pedro Rodrigues. Marques won the race and finished with a thunderous effort from 20 metres.

Back came Imortal. A free kick by Alves shot across the goal, missing everyone, then a good header by Duarte put Coelho through on goal, but he shot wide from ten metres.

Early in the second half Imortal a big shout for a penalty, nothing doing. But the visitor's defence was in a tangle. Could Imortal exploit this? As in the first half, Imortal dominated the play but could not find that vital touch inside the box. Substitute Baldé went close with a difficult header. The press was on. More good play set up a header for Duarte that hit the crossbar, bounced down and was hacked to safety from among the bodies.

Then a killer blow, with eight minutes left of the ninety. A massive wind assisted clearance by 'keeper Henriques was picked by just inside the Imortal half, squared across to unmarked André Chamusca whose low shot went in off the far post.

Much gloom among home fans, but within a minute there was light. Baldé was bundled over off the ball inside the penalty area. Referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.  Duarte placed the ball calmly and after the customary delay fairly hammered it in.

Imortal pushed for the equaliser which almost came in added time when an overhead kick by Tomas Rodrigues went just over.

But it was not to be. News that Ferreiras had won didn´t help. Imortal  now have a few days off, there being no games over Easter. The next game is at Ferreiras on Saturday 26th April, ko 1600hrs. I shall miss that one as I shall be enjoying the delights of Tonbridge v Borehamwood in National League south.

Imortal don't do well against Ferreiras, having lost both games against them in the first phase.

Imortal Team : Inácio; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Dragnev, Sousa; Cintra, Coelho, Alves, Antonio; Herlander Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Tomas Rodrigues, Vieira, Santos, Martins, Baldé.

Match statistics :

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 13, Portimonense B 18 + the penalty
Offside : 1 each
Shots on target : Imortal 3, Portimonense B 3
Shots off target : Imortal 8, Portimonense B 5
Shots blocked : Imortal 0, Portimonense B 2
Corners : Imortal 9, Portimonense B 4
Yellow cards : Imortal 2, Portimonense B 4
Red cards : none

I am in UK so unable to be there. That win, plus defeat for Portimonense B leaves the top of the table like this. All have five games remaining.

Imortal 57 points
Portimonense B 56 points
Ferreiras 55 points
Quarteirense 51 points..

Next game for Imortal is on Saturday, a visit to Faro to play FC 11 Esperanças. Eyes and ears will be following Ferreiras v Portimonense B.

Just to add some information about last Saturday's game. Herlander Tome gave Imortal the lead on 26 minutes, Walter Alves added the second after 61 minutes. No bookings!

Team : Inacio; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnev; Cintra, Coelhao, Alves, António; Herlander Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Sousa, Santos, Baldé, Salvador, Martins.

Next Saturday's game is at the inhospitable Penha ground in Faro. My own sporting activity (a  bowls match in Cabanas) will prevent me from going.

To add to yesterday, a vital win for Imortal to keep them in the title race. Jose Coelho opened the scoring on 11 minutes with his first goal of the season, the league's leading scorer Mario Duarte (aka Marocas) doubled thje lead on 70 minutes and the third wasscoered on 90 minuted by loyal subsitute Vicente Martins, his second goal in sixteen appearances off the bench. He hasn't started a game all season. Also making a rare appearance was Froita in goal, his first game since early January. Inacio dropped out after 15 consecutive games. He kept seven clean sheets in the first ten of those matches, but since then has let a few in.

Imortal team : Froita; Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Salvador, Dragnex; Cintra, Coelho, Alves, Herlander Tome; António, Duarte. Subs used : Santos, Baldé, Martins and Vieira.

Next up for Imortal is a home game against awkward opponents Quarteirense. Currently scheduled for 1700hrs / 5pm on Saturday but do check.

Quarteirense have lost only one of their last fourteen games. The earlier game against Imortal in this second stage was a 3-2 win for them. In the 'regular season' it was a 1 - 0 win to Quarteirense at their place, a 0 - 0 draw at Imortal.

Yesterday : Imortal 2 - 2 Quarteirense. Not a good result for either team. Imortal now find themselves four points behind leaders Portimonense B, who they visit next week, with two  games remaining. Quarteirense are now out of the race. More tomorrow.

IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA 2 - 2 QUARTEIRENSE

A result that was no good to either team. At the end, a deafening silence on and off the field told all. Quarteirense out of the title race, Imortal with now only the slimmest chance.

The statistics show a game of two halves. Imortal dominated the first half, Quarteirense the second. Imortal had been 2-1 ahead as early as the 19th minute, but such was the pressure from the visitors during the second period that a goal was inevitable.

The game got off to a lively start with Imortal defender Tiago Sousa getting himself booked after 17 seconds, but that was one of only seven free kicks in the first half. The second half made up for that!

Imortal took an early lead via an own goal by Diogo Marquês. A nice move down the right between Alves and Dragnev was finished with a cross to the far post which Marqûes arrived at first, unfortunately for Quarteirense. A few minutes later Imortal should have gone further ahead, but Duarte inexplicably failed to connect with a low cross while unmarked five metres from goal.

Quarteirense equalised with a stunning first time shot from the edge of the area, struck by Afonso Cavinho. Goalkeeper Froita had no chance with the well hit low shot, but he should have been closed down.

Imortal struck back and went ahead with a classic far post header by defender captain Pedro Rodrigues, converting a corner well taken by Dragnev. That was his first goal of the season.

The visitors responded, with winger Bruno Pereira causing Imortal's defence a lot of problems. Good defending was needed. Wilson Quintino should have scored from close range, while at the other end Imortal had more chances. One good save from Orfao denied Herlander Tome and António shot just wide.

A lively end to the first half included a mis-kick by Imortal's skilful Alves that landed on top of the crossbar. Defender Coelho stopped a powerful cross in the most painful way.

Quarteirense were very slow coming out for the second half, a good five minutes after Imortal were on the field. A fine coming I think. The second half eventually started at 16:09!

The early exchanges were even, with no clearcut chances for either side. Prates stopped one with his head, causing a long delay while he treated. Quarterense made three changes on the hour and the effect was immediate. Froita showed good hands dealing with long and deep crosses. Some defending was verging on panic, anywhere would do. Frequent stoppages interrupted the game. Imortal made all five changes, there were pauses for three more bookings and numerous 'injuries'.

The pressure mounted. Ricardo Tome (Ruca) replaced Alves, his first game since the end of March. Coelho was sent crashing into the advertising boards, nothing given. It was all one way traffic and the equaliser was coming, we all felt it. Ninety minutes were up as a good effort by João skimmed the crossbar. Could Imortal survive?

Nine added minute were announced. Groans from the home fans. It wasn't long after that when the equaliser came. The ball was banged into the area once more, confusion in the Imortal defence and into the goal went the ball. Officially given as an own goal by Imortal's captain Rodrigues. I couldn't tell.

Imortal went desperately searching for the vital winner, all hands to the pumps. Players were out on their feet, cramp being the cause. One last effort by Imortal ended when Imortal's Santos and the Quarteirense 'keeper got involved in a scrum for a loose ball. The ref gave a free kick against Santos as the clock ticked over to 99. The ´keeper lashed out at Santos, who lashed back. Both were sent off. The clock meanwhile had run out of minutes. There was just time for Quarteirense to kick off and and the game with a weak shot over the bar as my watch said twelve extra minutes had elapsed.

Imortal's next game is away at leaders Portimonense B on Saturday. Only a win will do and that would also depend on Portimonense B losing their last game on 31st May while imortal host neighbours Ferreiras in their last game.

Imortal team : Froita; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Dragnev, Sousa; Jose, Coelho, Alves, António; Herlander Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Tomas Rodrigues, Santos, Baldé, Salvador, Ricardo Tome.

Match statistics :

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 12, Quarteirense 11
Offside : Imortal 1, Quarteirense 0
Shots on target : Imortal 5, Quarteirense 4
Shots off target : Imortal 5, Quarteirense 5
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Quarteirense 5
Corners : Imortal 6, Quarteirense 4
Yellow cards : Imortal 3, Quarteirense 3
Red cards : 1 each
