Some joy indeed. I wonder now if Thursday night's cup match will go ahead considering that Roma are playing at 3pm that same day.  Imortal v Os 11 Esperanças still shown on official website as that date and time.

BTW Roma lost 3- 0 to Cádiz. Serves them right.

Yes, another good result and that's three wins in a row with no goals conceded. Win despite having Mateus Vieira sent off after 60 minutes. Imortal up to fourth pending today's results.

Oriental Dragon was apparently originally formed by immigrants from Macau and still has a number of Chinese players in its ranks. They are based in Barreiro, just across the river from Lisbon.

Next up for Imortal is a trip to Vidigueira followed on the 22nd by the local derby at home to Ferreiras.

Yesterday : Vasco da Gama 1 - 1 Imortal a last gasp penalty for Imortal after what had been a pretty desperate game at times. More later.

Vasco da Gama Vidigueira 1 - 1 Imortal

Only a brief report as I was massed behind the goal of this magnifcent stadium.

It was sunny (in contrast to the previous day, which was thick fog!), rather windy quite cold and  it was an artificial surface. Despite many gallons of water, the ball was bouncing all over the place and the wind was blowing it off course, especially in the second half when the home goalkeeper van der Laan found the seated specators several times.

It was a very quiet first half, very few attempts on goal and not even many free kicks, which made a nice change. The goal that did come put the home side in the lead after six minutes. A good run down the  right, a low hard cross which Imortal's defence didn't deal with. The first shot by the huge centre forward Eze was blocked, a scramble ensued and ended with the ball being poked into the net. Given by the FA as an own goal against Imortal's captain Pedro Rodrigues.

The midfield battles were fierce but fair. Torres fashioned a couple of half chances for Imortal which went over or wide, Elvis Odukporo was berated by team mates and coaches for not concentrating, the hosts were wasteful with the two chances they had. Half time 1-0.

The wind was in Imortal's favour for the second half but, as so often happens, it was too strong at times. The tactic of booting it down the field wasn't working. Imortal had the ball, but didn't manage a shot in the opening quarter hour. As so many coaches and managers do, Imortal's made three changes on the hour to try to change things.

Things livened up. Imortal pressed, the home defenders were in trouble at times, giving away free kicks in dangerous places. The locals were getting rather annoyed with the referee giving Imortal so many free kicks. The players also, yellow cards were shown.

Vasco da Gama did have one good counter attack with fifteen minutes remaining which was ended with a wasteful, weak shot to groans from the fans.

Imortal persisted with the long ball approach. Ninety minutes was up. A final long ball to the left wing found Ricardo Ramos, who crossed first time. One of those unfortunate ones where the ball hits a defender's arm when he can do nothing about it. Penalty given. After the customary debate and pleas, up stepped Mario Duarte aka Marocas to blast the penalty home. Big celebration by Imortal in front of the home bench, perhaps not the best place! A bit of a melée followed, a few more yellow cards were dished out. I didn't celebrate. There were about 50 in the bar area right behind where I was standing who had been at it all afternoon and were voicing their opinions.

Kick off and another exchange of views ending with Marocas getting a second yellow and thus sent off. Imortal rode out the final minute safely. I scuttled off to sample the local produce.

Always take a 1-1 draw away from home.

Next up is a home match next Sunday against Praiense from the Azores, with whom Imortal drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture in September. Praiense are 9th, with 18 points. They have not been in good form, seven games without a win until they beat Ferreiras yesterday.

Vidigueira is in the centre of an important wine producing area, located between Beja and Évora, a couple of hours driving from here. Vineyards all over the place and adegas a-plenty. Not perhaps best visited on a foggy, cold and windy January weekend and it's too hot in summer, but worth a couple of days say in June or October.

PS they are called Vasco da Gama as the explorer became the first count of Vidigueira. Apparently he had to pay the Duke of Bragança for the title.

Imortal's Algarve Cup match on 8th February against Louletano is down to be played at the Algarve Stadium. I think there should be room for all the fans intending to go.

Imortal 2 - 2 Praiense

A bad mistake by Imortal's goalkeeper Nélio Pereira in the second minute of added time gave Praiense a probably deseved equaliser.

Praiense had dominated the second half and when a free kick was awarded it was no surprise that everyone went up in search of the equaliser. Free kick was lofted into the danger area. Pereira went to punch clear, using both fists, but misjudged it. Up into the air went the ball rather than out, falling nicely for defender Lara to nod into the net from six yards. Much gloom!

Imortal had to reshuffle with Mario Duarte (Marocas) suspended after being sent off last week. The front three comprised Sandro Cabral, Fábio Domingues and Kaio Xavier. Ailton Tavares was also missing in defence, his place taken by Ramos.

The game got off to a fast and furious start. People were still coming into the ground when Praiense too the lead with a very good goal on 11 minutes. A very good curling cross tested Pereira and in clearing it he collided with visiting striker Jokanovic. No foul, but Jokanovic stayed down. Praiense carried on, recovered the loose ball which was lashed into the net via a goalpost by Macedo from well outside the penalty area. Among the late comers were the entire Ferreiras squad, having played their game earlier.

Imortal responded with efforts by Xavier and Sandro Cabral. Praiense defence got itself into a mess trying to clear a good cross by Torres, Xavier was in the mix and was eventually fouled for a penalty. The offender, Kindio Mendonca, tried to delay the inevitable yellow card by taking nearly two minutes to tie his laces after having received 'treatment' for the 'injury' sustained. The referee was patient and showed the card when he eventually stood up. Four minutes had passed from the penalty being given. Cabral made no mistake.

Praiense striker Monteiro had two good chances, including completely missing a cross while unmarked six yards from goal. Ramos cleared off the line after a shot from McPierre of Praiense had beaten Pereira.

Just before half time Cabral nearly had a second. He just got a toe to a deep cross on the far post, the ball shot across goal to hit the other post and rebound to safety.

It had been mostly a midfield battle at half time. Only four shots on goal between the two sides.

Both teams came out keen and eager for the second half (makes a change!) and within a few moments of the re-start Xavier brought an excellent finger tip save from visiting 'keeper Cruz.

Praiense had loud shouts for a penalty after 5 minutes. Nothing doing. Their rather fast left winger of the splendid name Kinglord Safo was causing Imortal problems. Pedro Rodrigues was strong in defence with well timed tackles and good blocks.

Imortal weathered that particular storm and midway through the half created some decent chances. Elvis Odukpore, who was having problems as he did last week, beat a defender to a long ball, rounded him nicely to be one-on-one with the goalkeeper but, with the goal gaping, from a few yards out blasted the ball miles over the bar. Domingues shot wide, but then Elvis redeemed himself to set up Imortal's second.

And a good one it was too. Elvis beat his man on the left and laid on a great low cross, pulled back to the edge of the area to be met first time by Cabral, whose fierce drive gave Cruz no chance. Joy unconfined!

Praiense struck back with more attacks. Monteiro had a good close range effort, Pereira saved well. Imortal's defence was at times being shredded. Ramos nearly turned the ball into his own net in a moment of near panic. Five minutes of added time were announced. Praiense continued to press forward and eventually forced their way through for the equaliser.

So, for Imortal, that is now seven games without defeat, three wins and four draws, but they have won only once at home in the league this season. Too many points dropped!

Imortal 1 - 0 Ferreiras

Cliché time! The only goal of this typically hard local derby was wonder free kick scored by Fábio Domingues in the 72nd minute. Ferreiras had conceded a free kick just outside the right hand corner of their penalty area. Various bodies consulted, then Domingues absolutely thundered the ball past the despairing dive of Ribeiro in the visitor's goal. Cue wild celebrations, for which according to the directives the entire Imortal team should have been booked! The referee decided to avoid all that paperwork and merely ushered than back onto the field. Those of you on Facebook find the Imortal Fans page where there should be a video highlights clip.

Ferreiras had more chances to score than Imortal, but were terribly wasteful in front of goal. Chief culprit was João Barbosa, who seemed unable to take a moment and compose himself before shooting.

Imortal had Ailton Tavares and Marocas restored to the starting line up. Also in from the beginning was Tidjane Baldé.

Ferreiras started well, the first of their many goal scoring opportunities falling to the very large striker Ivan Franciso, who got his head to a free kick delivered by André Grave, but Pereira in Imortal's goal brought off a flying finger-tip save. Ferreiras had the better of the early exchanges, but nothing really threatened. Imortal managed to create a chance when Tavares picked up a poor clearance but he shot just wide from outside the area when perhaps he could have taken a couple more steps. Franciso was then in defensive action for Ferreiras in blocking a free kick, then Imortal's Ramos hit the post with another free kick. Baldé could not quite get to the rebound. Bruno Torres was booked for clattering into André Sustelo, a former Imortal player.

Just before half time, Imortal conceded a free kick in a dangerous position but the wall did its job. There was still time for Sandro Cabral to have a good effort  blocked by Ferreiras' defence. No goals at half time.

A very long half time! The second half didn't kickoff until ten past four!

Imortal started the second period with an exotic free kick routine between Torres, Fadigas and Baldé, but the latter's hard low cross was seized by Ribeiro before strikers could pounce. Barbosa wasted a chance to put Ferreiras ahead. Not properly marked, his near post header went wide. The game became end to end. Elvis Odukporo crossed well for Cabral at the far post, but the header was weak and easily saved. Ferreiras counter-attacked, Francisco scuffed a shot when just a few yards out.

Imortal made a double change on the hour to try to change things. Off went Fadini (who had been booked) and Baldé, on came Domingues and Almeda.

Ferreiras had the next chances, but again Barbosa failed. Imortal drove forward again and won the free kick from which the goal was to come. Mass protests of course from the visitors. Once order had been restored came the moment of the match!

Ferreiras responded. There were loud and prolonged claims for a handball penalty, nothing doing. Ramos was fouled, Torres delivered the free kick but Marocas headed wide. Things were becoming rather tetchy. Three Ferreiras players were booked in rapid succession, players of both sides were guilty of over reaction to 'fouls'  resulting in long stoppages.

Three minutes of the regulation ninety remained when Barbosa was eventually on target but Pereira made an excellent low block save to keep Imortal's goal intact. Tavares and Rodrigues worked hard to foil Ferreiras attacks, at the cost of several corners, which Ferreiras failed to make use of. Seven minutes of added time were announced. Shortly after that, Marocas headed wide from a free kick.Time was almost up when Torres was hacked down in front of the Imortal bench, the usual melée resulted and more time was added.

Seven minutes had become nine when the final whistle blew, to the immense relief of the home fans among a good crowd of about 400.

Imortal are in a good run at the moment, eight league games since the last defeat, twelve goals scored, six conceded (three of them in one game) and five clean sheets. Something must be right!

Next up is a trip to Lagos next Sunday afternoon. They too are doing well in the League, seven games since their last defeat which, like Imortal, was at the hands of leaders Atlético.

ESPERANÇAS LAGOS 3 - 2 IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA

Not a good game, not a good day. Made worse by the fact that two of Lagos' goals were scored by Lamina Kuiate, who had been released by Imortal a few weeks ago. The game was quite often a midfield battle with few chances, especially in the first half, which was also spoiled by far too much play acting and petty fouls, which resulted in six minutes being added to the first 45.

A sunny day down in Lagos, rather windy as it often is. The pitch looked in good condition. Lagos started well and were ahead after six minutes. Imortal's defence was absent when Herlander Tome sent in a  low cross from the left wing to be met with a first time shot by Eduardo Portela from around the penalty spot. Pereira in goal had no chance. Pereira was in action a couple of minutes later, tipping a cross from Fabio Santos off the head of Portela and moments later saving from the head of Ben Zidnaba. Kuiate had an excellent chance to score, breaking the offside trap but again Pereira was ready.

It wasn't until the 26th minute that Imortal had their first effort on goal, a shot from Pedro Rodrigues that was blocked to safety.

The fourth yellow card of the half after just 33 minutes just about sums up proceedings until the clock was almost up. Six minutes added time had just been announced when a long clearance found Kuiate out wide. He cut inside with speed, beat defenders and shot low and hard to the far post.

Joy on the home bench, which drew the referee's attention that their sub goalkeeper was not wearing a bib. He saw yellow.

There was time for Imortal to mount a rare attack which ended with a slight fortuitous goal from the head of Fábio Domingues which flew across the goal, uncontrolled, but hit the far post and went in.

2-1 to Lagos at half time.

Whatever hope Imortal had of making a fist of it quickly evaporated. Five minutes after the break, Kuiate was unmarked on the far post to restore Lagos' two goal advantage with a good header after a corner.

Imortal toiled away but failed to make progress. One good cross by Elvis Odukporo was just a bit too strong for Cabral, but that was just about the best during a long period of fairly uninspring football by both teams. Imortal did force three corners in quick sucession midway through the half but the defence dealt with them. The second half was also devoid of free kicks for some odd reason, especially after the various nonsenses of the first half. It wasn't until the 29th minute when the ref blew for the second foul of the half, which resulted in a booking for Imortal sub Nuno Pereira.

The game wore on, neither team looked like scoring. The usual late substitutions broke up the play. Imortal mounted one last attack as the clock ticked over to 90 minutes which ended in another slightly lucky goal with Marocas getting in a toe poke from a goalmouth scramble. Five more minutes were announced, but Imortal could not create another chance. Then I had to walk rather quickly for the 1720 train back to Albufeira!

Next game for Imortal will be home to Juventude Évora next Sunday at 1500hrs. They are fourth in the League.
