IMORTAL 0-0 QUARTEIRENSE

A frustrating afternoon for home fans. Quarteirense had the better of the game in terms of possession. A couple of Imortal players, Herlander Tome and Walter Alves, were not on their game. Mistakes were many. But Imortal had the two best chances to score.

The first came on 63 minutes. Ricardo Tome was comprehensively sent crashing down as he ran full speed into the penalty area. The customary protests saw three yellow cards for assorted Quarteirense players. What they were protesting about was a mystery. After some discussion, the penalty was delegated to Walter Alves. His stuttering run ended with a tame shot that was easily smothered by Orfao in the visitor's goal.

The second opportunity came four minutes before the end of normal time. Tome found himself one on one with the goalkeeper after a swift counter-attack. He tipped the ball wide of the advancing ´keeper from the edge of the penalty area only to see it go millimetres wide of the post.

The first half was especially poor, with nothing to write about for the first half hour or so. Quarteirense striker Miranda had a good opportunity, but shot straight at Inacio. A minute later Cintra did the same at the other end. Right at the end of the half, Dragnev took one for the team as they say, being booked for a foul that ended a dangerous Quarteirense move 25 metres from goal.

Two points lost for Imortal, whose next game is at Silves on Saturday. Silves beat Portimonense B last time out and are, like Quarteirense, usually difficult opponents.

Imortal team : Inacio; Prates, P. Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnev; Cintra, Alves, António, R. Tome; H. Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Coelho, Romeiro, Santos, Martins.

Match statistics

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 12, Quarteirense 6 plus the penalty

Shots on target : Imortal 4, Quarteirense 2
Shots off target: Imortal 2, Quarteirense 5

Silves 0 - 1 Imortal

Couldn't write the report yesterday as the necessary official information about Saturday's game wasn't posted until late last night!

Overall a good result for Imortal, but Silves had most of the ball for long periods, fortunately to no effect. They did not manage a single effort on goal for the second half. A combination of very poor passing and good defensive cover kept them at bay.

Imortal had only one change from last week's starting line-up. Dragnev was suspended (five yellow cards) and his place taken by Rodrigo Salvador, who had a good game at left back.

Imortal made few scoring opportunities themselves. An early opportunity by Ruca was wasted with a tame shot straight at ´keeper Lopes. He and Walter Alves were combining well. That combination was responsible for the only goal ten minutes into the second half. Alves collected a loose ball just outside the Silves penalty area, jinked his way past a defender and put in a neat pass beyond another. Ruca was in space, with time to hook the ball past Lopes from about ten metres out.

Alves had an earlier shot well over the bar, Cintra should have done better when heading a cross from Alves. Silves only decent first half chance fell to Marco Andrade, but Inacio saved easily.

Imortal themselves managed to create only four scoring opportunities in a second half that was fairly scrappy all round. There was a slightly strange incident over a free kick which earned Silves player Souza a yellow. The referee was fairly insistent throughout that free kicks and throws should be taken from the correct place. That's unusual in itself. Souza placed the ball the customary ten metres ahead of where it should have been. Go back, said the ref. He did, but as soon as the referee turned around he moved it forward again. Exasperated referee produces yellow card. Souza then put the ball down where it had been before he was booked and took the free kick. But, as with all Silves' set pieces, totally wasted.

Towards the end, Silves resorted to route 1 football. Imortal's defenders sent it back whence it came. Seven minutes added time were shown, at which point Imortal's Coelho was comprehensively flattened. No bookings, but the customary debate added yet more time. There was a chance for Mauro Jose to increase the lead but his header went wide. The game ended with Silves winning three quick corners, but again their delivery was very poor and easily dealt with.

Some Silves fans were less than happy at the end, GNR paying attention just in case. News that Ferreiras had lost brought more smiles to the good number of visiting fans. Seven wins from the last eight matches and only one goal conceded. Can't be bad!

The final match of the first phase will be the very local derby between Imortal (1st) and Ferreiras (2nd) on Saturday 8th March ko 1500hrs at the Albufeira stadium.

Imortal team : Inacio; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Salvador; Cintra, Alves, António; H. Tome, ´Ruca´ Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Coelho, Tomas Rodrigues, Santos, Baldé, Martins.

Match statistics

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 11, Silves 12
Offside: none
Shots on target :  Imortal 3, Silves 1
Shots off target : Imortal 2 Silves 2
Shots blocked : Imortal 0, Silves 1
Corners : Imortal 3, Silves 4.

Yellow cards : Imortal 1, Silves 3.

Top positions are these. All have played 21 games

Imortal pts 48 GD +31
Ferreiras pts 45 GD +18
Portimonense B pts 43 GD +21
Quarteirense pts 38 GD +27

But in Portugal if points are equal the first 'tie break' is the record between the two. Ferreiras won at home to Imortal, so Imortal must avoid defeat tomorrow to remain top of the table before phase 2.

Yesterday : Imortal 1 - 2 Ferreiras

A disappointing end to the first phase. The win for Ferreiras puts them top of the league over Imortal. Both have 48 points, but slthough Imortal have the superior goal difference it's the head to head record here that counts as the first tie break.

Report tomorrow.

IMORTAL 1 - 2 FERREIRAS

A disappointing end to the first phase for Imortal. A run of nine games without defeat and only two goals conceded was brought to an end by local rivals Ferreiras. That win put Ferreiras top of the table above Imortal at the end of phase 1. The league now splits into two sections. The top six will play a further round of matches to determine the Championship and the single promotion place. There will be no  games next weekend. Things get going again on March 22nd.

A good crowd filed in on what was a rainy day at the start. Numbers were boosted by two Swiss teams down for some warm weather training (ha!) prior to the resumption of their season plus a large group from a local children's home. The pitch was wet, very wet in some areas. Had it rained any more, the game would probably not have finished. Thankfully, it rained for only a short while.

Imortal didn't seem to be able to avoid the very wet area in front of the main stand and were literally bogged down. Go over to the drier side! Both teams had early chances. For Imortal, Dragnev put over a super cross from the left that striker Duarte was just unable to reach. At the other end, Ferreiras' Bruno Pereira needed better control at a vital moment, he would have had a clear shot from about ten metres out but lost the ball. Imortal's defence limited Ferreiras to efforts from long range, easily gathered by 'keeper Inacio. Dragnev sent in another excellent cross for imortal, that managed to miss everyone in front of goal. Imortal's best chance came on the half hour. A cross by Helder Tome was met by the head of Duarte, but his effort flew just over the crossbar. Another opportunity fell to Santos, on the edge of the penalty area but after a 360º spin his shot was scuffed.

Some of the passing from both teams had been very poor, but there was nothing wrong with a ball across the area eleven minutes into the second half that gave Ferreiras the lead. Former Imortal player Williams Fadini was at the far post to whack it in from close range. The lead lasted nine minutes. Imortal were given a free kick on the left, just outside the penalty area. Everyone shaped for across to the far post, but Alves and Dragnev had other ideas. Alves drilled the ball square to the other corner of the penalty area, and we all thought, 'no-one's going to get that'. Not so! The move must have been one from the playbook. Dragnev was waiting and struck the ball first time, cleanly and precisely just inside the post.

Imortal pressed forward. Alves showed his futsal skills could work even on wet grass, but defenders were alert. Alves then made what looked like a fairly horrible tackle in midfield, which was followed by a melée but no yellow card. The referee was being very lenient we said. A lot of tackles had been punished by no more than a free kick when on another day with a different  referee about six players would have been booked.

Ferreiras' winner came in the 83rd minute with a slight touch of fortune. A cross was delivered by Bruno Torres (another former Imortal player) and found Teixeira about 15 metres out. His shot took a deflection giving Inacio no chance.

Imortal had a good chance to level things just before the end of normal time. Good work between Helder Tome and Alves created a good opportunity but Alves shot straight at the ´keeper. Six minutes were added on, but there was nothing of note to record. Joy for Ferreiras as they went top of the table. Muttering among the home fans. Did we do enough?

Imortal team : Inacio; Prates, P. Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnez; Cintra, Alves, António, Santos; Duarte, Helder Tome. Subs used : T. Rodrigues, Vieira, Martins.

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 14, Ferreiras 11

IMORTAL 3 - 2 SILVES

An eventful last 15 minutes! What was announced as seven minutes added time turned into nearly twelve, during which Imortal equalised for the second time and then grabbed the winner. The Silves players and fans were incensed and several made a rush for the referee. The full weight of the GNR was required to escort the match officials from the pitch. The official record shows three red cards issued during the melée, two for Silves and one, Herlander Tome, for Albufeira. He will be suspended, for how long who knows yet, and will be a big loss.

Imortal had not played well for much of the game. It was difficult get through the well organised Silves defence. Poor passing didn't help either. Silves, for their part, defended in depth and made only one scoring opportunity during the first half.

The team was unchanged from last week except that Mateus Vieira replaced Ricardo Tome in only his fourth start of the season.

Imortal had early chances, with Alves being crowded out or blocked more than once and then crossing well for Duarte, whose curling effort from the edge of the area went narrowly wide. Silves relied on the occasional counter-attack, but there were no alarms. Not on the pitch at least! A powerful clearance demolished the radio station's aerial mounted on top of the player's tunnel.

The referee was rather lenient we felt. Only five free kicks were awarded in the fist half. Typical was a rugby tackle on Alves that went unpunished. It wasn't until 34 minutes had passed when the whistle first went against Imortal. Silves' George Souza saw yellow for a hack at Cintra, just before a great run down the left by Dragnev was finished with a superb cross that went just behind Duarte, poised five metres from goal.

The second half started with a bang. Two bangs. Imortal's defence was still in the changing room when Silves attacked with speed, Kevin Bacerra down the left wing crossing to Souza who was completely unmarked in front of goal. `Keeper Inácio had no chance. The lead didn't last long. The second bang saw Antonio down the right wing for Imortal, crossing to Duarte on the far post who had an easy header for the equaliser. That was Imortal's first effort on target.

Not much happened during the next twenty minutes or so. With the setting sun in defender's eyes, Martins replaced Vieira to bring more height into the attack. Vieira received a good round of applause.

Then the game burst into life, rather unexpectedly. Imortal were pressing forward, everyone bar Inacio was in the Silves half. A mighty boot out of defence fell to Bruno Nova, lurking just inside the half with nobody within twenty metres of him. Inácio had stayed back and was helpless as Nova headed towards him, ball at his feet. He finished calmly, low and hard.

Imortal were struggling to make an impact against Silves' even more determined defence. Just as time was running out, a free kick routine went horribly wrong, but still Dragnev got a toe to the ball but poked it wide from close range.

Seven minutes added time were announced. Imortal pressed. My watch said 52 minutes (45+7) when Imortal were awarded a corner. Nowadays of course the game does not end just because time is up. Dragnev took the corner which found Duarte's head for the second equaliser. 2-2, fair enough we thought. We will take a draw after that.

Game kicked off and still we played. Eight, nine, ten minutes!! Why?? Silves were visibly tiring when Herlander Tome crossed from the right to Duarte, who completed his hat-trick with a third header. Joy unconfined for Imortal players and fans, naturally. We kicked off again with just over 11 minutes on the clock. My watch said 56:42 when the referee blew the final whistle.

Then of course it got out of hand. Souza, in particular, went wild and had to be held back by team-mates and assorted trainers. He was red-carded as was his team mate Diogo Pinto. Somewhere in the scrum Herlander Tome also saw red. There could easily have been a lot more. The GNR escorted the match officials off the pitch before the players. One officer was tapping either his baton or gun, I couldn't quite see. The contingent of Silves fans were very unhappy to say the least.

But Imortal have now two wins from two in this second stage. If all the games are going to be like that, we shall have shredded nerves come the end of the season.

Next up for Imortal is a trip next Saturday to Quarteirense, ko 1600hrs. I shall be unable to go because of the lack of weekend buses from Quarteira to Albufeira.

And I won another t-shirt in the raffle!

Imortal team : Inácio; Prates, Pedro Rodrigues, Jose, Dragnev; Cintra, Alves, Antonio, Vieira; Herlander Tome, Duarte. Subs used : Martins, Coelho, Tomas Rodrigues, Baldé. (Incidentally Imortal's back four were numbered 2,3,4 and 5. Most unusual these days with squad numbers.)

Match statistics

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 3 (a record surely), Silves 9
Offside : none at all
Shots on target : Imortal 3 (so a 100% success rate), Silves 2 (ditto)
Shots off target : Imortal 5, Silves 0
Shots blocked : Imortal 4, Silves 1
Corners : Imortal 4, Silves 3
Yellow cards : Imortal 1, Silves 2
Red cards, after the final whistle, Imortal 1, Silves 2
