Imortal 4 the 11 Esperanças 1

As I said, a jolly end of season outing against a team already relegated and playing like it. All four goals were scored by Bastian. one of the younger players who has recently been in the team, no doubt with an eye to next season.

The weather was sunny and windy, the pitch immaculate but the crowd sparse. Benfica were playing their decisive match on live TV. There is no 'protection' here for lower league teams from TV, a rigid adherence to the 1700hrs ko meant that many preferred to sit in front of TV.

Imortal did take a while to get going. The opening goal did not come until stoppage time at the end of the first half. The visitors' goalkeeper was called into action before that, making very good saves from Oliveira, Canito and Santos. Maia made some good runs down the right wing, but the final ball was often not good enough. For their part, the visitors were pinned back into their defensive third and made only one break which was quickly snuffed out by good defending.

The first goal was a bit of luck. After that rare attack, Bastian had been set up by a good clearance and counter attack and sped off into enemy territory, He stumbled slightly, recovered and rolled an accurate shot past the advancing 'keeper.

Spurred on by this, Imortal came out early for the second half. But it was 11 Esperanças that started the better. A bit of wind assistance had Imortal's defence in a mess, an attempted clearance went higher than it went away, the ball fell nicely on the edge of the area to one Ze Roberto, whose first time shot flew low and hard past Nelio's dive for the equaliser.

That goal seemed to upset Imortal's rythm, two quick yellow cards further did so. The ref ran 50 yards to book captain Rodrigues for some very audible dissent when Canito was supposed to have fouled someone down the other end. Oliveira was booked for a rather strong reaction after he was fouled. His temper needs to be conntrolled!

Things calmed down and after a quarter of an hour a quick move down the centre set up Bastian twenty yards out. Almost in slow motion he turned and shot, accurately and powerfully. The goalkeeper got in the way but couldn't prevent the score.

It was 3-1 ten minutes later, this time a perfectly controlled near post header from a cross jinked in from the left wing. Same man, that was his hat-trick.

He could and should have made it four a few minutes later, but lobbed over the goal when it was easier to score. The game began to drag a bit, not helped by two very long drawn out substitutions. Seems that the visitors man holding aloft the board didn't feel like doing the number until the ref said, on you come!

Imortal's fourth came a few minutes before the end. Oliveira, a peripheral figure for much of the game, finally got himself into a good position inside the area, only to be unceremoniously hacked down by the goalkeeper. The ball rolled over to Bastian who tapped it home from six yards before the ref could blow for a penalty.

He then managed to blast yet another chance way over the bar, before being subbed for his well deserved personal clap.

Imortal's season finishes next Saturday with a visit to Culatrense at the dump that passes for a football ground at Penha, in Faro. Ko is at 5pm / 1700rs. I don't know whether to go or not!

Final game of the season, Culatrense 0 Imortal 1. I was unable to go owing to the timing of the game.

Imortal finish top of the 'relegation' group after the second phase. Only two defeats in the last 18 games looks well for next season. If they can keep the players.

Anyone who is around the weekend of 7 / 8 October please note that Imortal's home game  that weekend will be on Sunday 8th at 1500hrs / 3pm. That gives me about 10 minutes to run like h**l down the road afterwards for the England game at 1700,.

Imortal are also playing on Thursday 5th (Republic Day holiday) away to Lagos ko 1500hrs / 3pm so The 1800hrs bus from Lagos back to Albufeira better be on time as England play Malta at 1945!

Quarteirense 1 Imortal 0

We wuz robbed! If ever a game deserved the epithet 'nil-nil written all over it' it had to be this one. Neither goalkeeper had to do more than pickup the ball for 89 minutes until, right at the end, all hell broke loose.

A quick break out of defence by the hosts, a clumsy tackle right on the edge of the area and a red card for Imortal. Much protest, waving of arms and shouting of course. A good three minutes later the free kick was taken, well enough to be the only accurate shot of the game. Imortal's 'keeper Nelio never even moved as it hit the bottom corner of the net.

The ref wasn't very generous with the added time, only four minutes. Imortal threw everyone forward to try to grab a point, but to no avail. There was just time for another melée after Oliveira had been clattered in the penalty area, nothing doing but a free kick was given moments later. Once the scrum had been sorted out, the ball was crossed in and it was Nelio who got on the end of it but headed over the bar. More pushing and shoving at the final whistle.

As a whole, the game was pretty dire on a well grassed pitch that was rather bumpy in places. This caused both teams problems throughout. The first half was particularly awful, with only three scoring chances created and none of the shots remotely on target. Imortal did manage a short spell of pressure around 20 minutes in, four corners were gained, but nothing became of them.

Quarteirense had a chance right at the start of the second half, defender Fábio raced most of the length of the pitch, beat two tackles but was thwarted at the last by Imortal's captain Pedro Rodrigues just as he lined up his shot.

The home defence was often dithering among themselves, trying to knock the ball around instead of booting it up the pitch, but Imortal were not quick enough to get the ball off them. One chance did come Imortal's way, again it was a break break from defence and a great pass to Oliveira, who was in the clear. Off he sped towards goal but his control let him down and the 'keeper was able to smother the loose ball.

Quarteira finally managed a shot on target with 15 minutes of normal time remaining, that I could have stopped with ease. Both sides made a raft of substitutions, the game looked to be winding down towards the scoreless draw then came the main event of the afternoon.

At least I could have a laugh at the scorer being booked for over celebrating.

That was Imortal's first game and with nul points are bottom of the league but having played one game fewer than the others.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 17, Quarteirense 20

Yellow cards : Imortal 3 at least, Quarteirense 4 at least. Cards were being waved in the final moments, but it wasn't clear at whom.

Red Card : Imortal 1

Imortal's next game is on Thursday afternoon, away to Lagos (Republic Day holiday) then at home next Sunday at 3pm to the delightful Culatrense.

And that turned out to be less than optimal. I was in bed by 1030pm after a long and trying day! Two good things - I now go half fare on the train, so Albufeira to Lagos was €2,40. train was packed. Also, no-one asked me for any money to get into the stadium at Lagos so at that point my total outlay for a day at the football was €3,20! Cost me €5,60 to get back on the bus though, didn't have my residencia for half price.

Imortal warming up before the game

Match report

Esperança Lagos 4 - 1 Imortal

A killer twenty minute spell either side of half time did for Imortal, who had gone into the lead after 5 minutes. A goal on the stroke of half time took the hosts in level. Within twenty minutes of the re-start they were 3-1 up, it could have been more had Nélio in goal not made some good saves. To compound the miserable day, striker Paullo Olivieira, who had a fairly quiet game, saw a straight red for high boot challenge. Imortal were fairly run ragged after that, only Lagos' poor finishing stopped it from being 6 or 7.

Imortal have several new faces this season, mostly fairly young looking players who seemed a bit physically lightweight in comparison with the opposition. One of them, a striker name of Djane, put Imortal ahead after five minutes on a hot and quite windy day. A great crossfield pass from Oliveira set him up for a short run, finished with an accurate shot from 12 yards.

Both teams defended well throughout this half, with old Imortal faces Rodrigues, Catita and Canito getting in some good blocks and tackles. Their opponents did likewise, very few goal scoring chances were created. Oliveira could have shot perhaps, didn't and was robbed while at the other end Lagos scrambled the ball into the net but the ref was kind and disallowed it for a foul on Nélio, who stayed down for a couple of minutes.

Not much happened apart from Oliveira being clattered off the ball, nothing given and for a moment it looked like he might do what he has done in the past, but kept his cool this time.

Then right at the end of three minutes added time, Canito conceded a free kick wide out on the Lagos right wing. In came the kick, everyone missed it at first, but on the post Hernani of Lagos was on hand to stab the ball over the line.

There wasn't time to kickoff, the teams went in level.

Whatever was said in the Lagos dressing room at half time worked well. Within the opening four minutes, Lagos were putting themselves about. Djane was clogged for about the third time. Then came a thunderous shot from Lagos a striker Texeira, several clichés needed here. His superb effort from about 25 yards almost broke the crossbar, Nélio never moved and luckily the ball spun away to safety. Lagos continued to press, Nélio was again called into action and this time moved quickly enough to block a shot with his feet. Another shot went just wide of his goal. A second goal for Lagos was well on the cards.

Imortal's diminutive defender Mamadu was booked for a foul out on the Lagos left wing. The resulting free kick caused confusion in defence, between them Rodrigues and Nélio Pereira (to give him his full name) almost managed to score an own goal.

Then defender Catita had to go off with an injury, replaced by Baldé who is not a defender. That upset the shape of the team and there were vast acres of space down the Lagos right wing which they exploited.

Fifteen minutes into the second half a long range free kick hit a post, the rebound went to Hernani who tapped in his second from close range. Lagos then missed a sitter but three minutes later went 3-1 up, another break down the Lagos right wing, Nobrega shot  high and hard on the run from the edge of the area giving Nélio no chance.

Imortal did respond at this point, Mateus had a good shot blocked but then came Oliveira's dismissal. A loose ball, bouncing just inside Lagos half was up for grabs, Oliveira's boot came in high and caught an opponent on the chest. The ref had no hesitation in issuing a straight red, which probably means a three match ban. Imortal's captain Rodrigues was booked for offering his opinion about the decision.

Lagos sat back a bit, happy with their lead on a hot day. The ten men did create a couple of scoring opportunities, particularly Baldé, who hit a 25 yard free kick millimetres wide with the 'keeper nowhere. Djane got his own back for the earlier punishment with a block tackle that had his oppo very unhappy, but the ref gave nothing.

Silly season began in the 43rd minute when Lagos striker Nobrega was sent off on a second yellow, he had played on after a free kick to whack the ball into the net. Claimed he didn't hear a whistle of course. The commentator from Radio Alvor was beside himself, words like stupid, idiot, when will they learn...etc

Four minutes added time were called during which Lagos managed to score a fourth, courtesy of a horrible error by Mamadu in not clearing but trying to be clever. Lagos could have a fifth right on time but a terrible miss from 10 yards by the scorer of the previous goal, one Tommy Catinha, spared Imortal an even worse day.

Expanded information above thanks to Radio Alvor and the Esperanças Lagos website.

It's going to be a big job to get back from those two defeats, the saving grace being that the opposition so far has been two of the stronger teams. Sunday's home game against Cultrense has to be a win. Their record so far has been a draw and two defeats, three goals having been conceded in each of their matches.

match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 16, Lagos 15
Offsides : Imortal 3, Lagos 3
Shots on target : Imortal 3, Lagos 6
Shots off target : Imortal 4, Lagos 7 including the one that hit the bar.
Shots blocked : Imortal 3, Lagos 0

IMORTAL 4 CULATRENSE 1

A good crowd of about 150, including numerous holidaymakers,  watched Imortal record their first points of the season against very weak opposition.

Imortal dominated the game almost completely from the opening goal inside two minutes, but poor finishing let them down. The absence of main striker Oliveira, suspended after his sending off on Thursday, was one reason.

The game had barely started when Imortal's first attack was rewarded with a goal scored by midfielder Cascalvo. The Culatrense defence was all over the place allowing him a shot from ten yards. Imortal were in a  3 - 4 3 formation with Baldé starting in midfield and Calado restored to centre back after his one match ban.

Overall the game was very scrappy in parts, Culatrense were hardly ever a threat except just the once when a momentary switch-off allowed them a consolation. Neither goalkeeper actually made a save worthy of the name, the ball either went in the goal or miles over or wide.

The remainder of the first half was uneventful. Cascalvo tried a ludicrous back heel shot that sailed wide, a weak effort by Baldé from 20 metre also missed by a long way. Casianho, who later scored twice, had the best opportunity after good work by Canito to recover a loose ball and set him up for the shot, but he narrowly missed. The teams went in for half time with Imortal 1-0 up.

The first twenty minutes of the second half were extremely poor, the only incidents of note were a yellow card for the speedy Imortal forward Djane, for battering an opponent about twice his size and one also for a Culatrense player for a similar assault on Cascalvo. Finally,  mid-way through the half, something actually happened of merit. Imortal went 2-0 up from a corner flicked on by Casianho to Mamadu, totally unmarked on the far post who had to do no more than nod the ball in from close range.

A few minutes later Casianho tried a curler when a more straightforward shot could have been better, but he made up for that on the half hour by ending a nice move, a cross from Nasir and an easy tap in for him and 3-0.

Culatrense responded and were able to claw back a goal when Imortal's defence was caught napping, failed to clear and a scramble was ended with a toe-poke over the line. Pereira in goal was rather unhappy!

Then the strangest event, the ref went down with cramp. Several minutes of attention from the visiting physio 'assisted' by a couple of Imortal players failed to repair the damage. The senior linesman took over for the final minutes. Luckily for the replacement official nothing at all happened during his tenure other than Imortal's fourth goal, four minutes into the seven minutes added time. This was Casianho's second, ending a good break, springing the offside trap, orchestrated by Mamadu, that left the Culatrense 'keeper facing three Imortal forwards on his own.

Imortal rise to 9th place with a game in hand, which has been scheduled for Wednesday 18th October, at home to Carvoeiro United, ko 2000hrs / 8pm

Match stats

A new look Culatrense, hardly any fouls conceded. A change from what we have seen from them in previous seasons!

Free Kicks conceded : Imortal 20, Culatrense 7. The ref was a bit harsh in the 15 minutes or so before he went down injured. Divine retribution?
Offside : Imortal 1, Culatrense 0
Shots on target : Imortal 7, Culatrense 2
Shots off target : Imortal 7, Culatrense 0
Shots blocked : Imortal 2, Culatrense 3
Corners : Imortal 6, Culatrense 3
Yellow cards : Imortal 3, Culatrense 2
Red cards : none

Messinense 1 -0 Imortal

More later, but we played against 10 men for 65 minutes after a bizarre sending off. Ten men packed behind the ball for the rest of the game. Horrible and frustrating.

Wednesday night, dilemma, Benfica v Man Utd or Imortal v Carvoeiro?

Imortal Tom, aren't you fed up of watching a parked bus?
What happened to the Utd of old, two flying wingers, you score three we'll score four? That was Utd worthy of respect and appreciation. They may be second at the mo, but if they play the season out as they've started, they'll be lucky to be top six!

Messinense 1 - 0 Imortal

I don't like that place! We were hammered there last season and came away with nothing to feel good about this. Imortal played against ten men for just over an hour, threw everything at the opposition but failed to create more than a couple of decent chances.

The game hinged on a bizarre sequence of events midway through the half. Messinense attacked, ball was down with a forwards just at the junction of six yard line and goal line when Imortal's 'keeper Nélio Pereira unceremoniously took him out. Both players went down like the proverbial sacks. The game was held up for about three minutes while both received attention. Goalkeepers are of course exempt from the ridiculous ruling that injured players who ask for attention have to leave the field (show me where in the laws it says this) so he took his place in goal for the penalty. No doubt it was a penalty, but no card seen.

Penalty taken and duly scored. At least two Messinense players then rushed up to Pereira as if to say 'served you right, you....' and one of them seemed to manhandle him  Out comes red card, off he goes. There followed the mandatory arm waving, pushing and shoving. I made it 5 minutes between the award of the penalty until we kicked off again.

Messinense then 'parked the bus' as I believe the cliché now is. Nine men behind the ball, occasionally some pretty robust challenges and the usual feigning of injury to break up the play. Imortal managed not one shot on target in the first 45 and only a couple of half chances that either went wide or were blocked. One attack was well thwarted by Messinense's goalkeeper Lima, but in so doing he punched his central defender Fisher (with Imortal last season) in the head. Another long stoppage resulted.

Just before the interval Imortal's speedy defender Mamadu came off second best in a hard challenge. He went off after a few minutes limping around. The ref was very ungenerous with the time to be added, alowing only three minutes. Anger on the visitor's bench!

Imortal totally dominated the second period, wave after wave of attacks but they foundered on the organised defence. Any old boot up the field was cheered by the mob sitting outside the bar down by one corner.

This is them at half time, but the chap in the red and black hoops and those near him are Imortal men.

The nearest we got to a goal was a great flick of a shot by Cassiano, almost on the goal-line, which clipped the top of the crossbar on the far side of the goal. Mateus was bundled over jsut as he reaied a shot from 15 yards, no real appeal for a penalty but it was gettign desperate! Centre half Calado was pushed up front to add size and weight to the strike force. He had an effort rightly disallowed for offside (Imortal were very guilty of not looking along the line for the whole of the game), Nogueira headed tamely into the 'keeper's hands. Sub Nasir likewise wasted two half chances with weak shots easily stopped. There were a couple of half hearted shouts for a penalty with ball striking hand, nothing doing.

Right at the end the home goal keeper decided he need a sit down, that stopped the game yet again. All the old tricks were being pulled out of the box, anything to disrupt the flow of the game.

Five minutes additional time were announced, much ire again on the visitors bench. One chance came Imortal's way during the added time, a nice head down by Flavinho was blasted miles over the bar by Nasir.

The game ended with Imortal's captain Rodrigues speaking at length to the officials, the GNR decided they needed an escort from the pitch.

Imortal's next game is this Wednesday evening at home to Carvoeiro United, ko 830pm /2030hrs

Shots off target : Imortal 5, Messinense 2

Yellow cards :IMortal 1 (Calado, foul), Messinense none at all. At least I didn´t see any.

Last night : Imortal 2 Carvoeiro United 1 a much better game all round that Saturday's affair.

Only a few more than three men and a dog chose this one over Benfica v Man Utd, but the crowd did swell at half time in our game when that one had finished and several came out of the clubhouse bar!

More later.
