I wanted to tell you of my excellent experience at Hospital Lusiades in Albufeira. I called in this morning at 11.15 to make appt as my back pain had got really bad . By 12.30 I was in front of the orthopedic doctor who gave me a pain killing injection plus a prescription. Tomorrow I have my X ray. I don't want to knock NHS but the speed & service was vastly superior to the UK.

The Hospital is located on Estrada Val Pedras at junction at top end of Airstrip

I thought that was a private hospital and not state run?

Yes - that's the one, but it only cost €24 for consultation & injection.
Prescription down the local chemist was only €6.18 for two items so very cheap.
I don't know how much the X ray will be but will find out later

mmmmm, that's cheap. Cost us €100 at one of the private clinics in Oura  a few years ago to have an infection lanced and dressed + prescription for antibiotics.

Perry - I perhaps shouldn't have used the NHS for comparison but I had to wait 2 weeks for appointment to see orthopaedic doctor at Pinehill Hospital in Hitchin - a BUPA hospital then a further few days to get X ray.

I had X ray done today at cost of €29 - in & out in under 40 minutes.
Excellent service
