Boo hiss.... fancy having the games each day kick off at approx the same time.
Anoraks like me thus deprived of a few double-headers. Although they fit in neatly with the soon-to-be-released U16 tournament at Vila Real SA [8th,10th and 12th]!

Portugal U17 4 - 0 England U17 A dismal performance from the Young Lions at Estadio da Nora. For Twenty minutes the Portuguese lads hardly touched the ball, unfortunately neither did their keeper. It was all frighteningly familiar as an England fan, all the possession with no end product. The solitary poke at the onion bag coming via a half shot from England full back, Clint Mola which was easily gathered by Portugal's Tabuaco. Just before the half hour mark, a pacey run to the right hand by-line and a cut back across the six yard box by Embalo, lead to a poorly marked Goncalo Gomes rifling the ball into the goal. After this the Portuguese virtually took control, a complete turn around to what had gone before. On the stroke of half time a carbon copy move to that which lead to the first goal bought the Portuguese boys a second, Gomes again the beneficiary. In the second half England were a little better, but still only once troubled Tabuaco - Mola again the provider of a fairly tame shot that the Portuguese net-minder gathered easily once again. The enormous England goalkeeper, Arsenal's Arthur Okonkwo, who failed to inspire much confidence throughout, had to shoulder some of the blame for Portugal's two further strikes. A shot from the left hand side of the area was palmed back into the danger zone, and the lively Embalo pounced to shoot home from twelve yards. Similarly a poor parry lead to the Portuguese fourth, the ball bouncing into the path of substitute Felix Correia who gleefully smashed it into the top right hand corner to complete the rout. England coach Steve Cooper, who was strangely subdued until a couple of late corners, where he barked a few instructions about marking, will really have to go back to the drawing board if the Young Lions are going to get anything from Germany or The Netherlands in their other two fixtures. Starting Line Ups... Portugal: Tabuaco (Vitoria Guimaraes) Tavares (Benfica) Faustino (Porto) Saldanha (Benfica) Ferreira (Benfica) Fernandes (Sporting) Jocu (Benfica) Cunha (Benfica) Tavares (Benfica) Gomes (Benfica) Embalo (Benfica) England: Okonkwo (Arsenal) Mola (Chelsea) Alese (West Ham) Binks (Spurs) Daley-Campbell (Arsenal) Doyle (Man City) Anjorin (Chelsea) Tulloch (West Brom) Coyle (Arsenal) Amaechi (Arsenal) John-Jules (Arsenal) |

Looks like whoever selects the England team seems to think England is mainly inside the M25.

On an ethnicity note, one wonders what white teenaged boys are doing with their time these days. Nine of England's starting XI were black players, as were eight of the Portuguese.

I noticed that - puts you in mind of the Liverpool/Man Utd/Everton dominated first team squad of the late eighties. Nothing compared to that Portugal starting 11 mind you...

Just to tie this tournament up, the final games have been played today......
England 2 Netherlands 0 at Est Algarve. A much better performance than that seen at Ferreiras against Portugal last week. Albeit helped by the second goal coming from a charge down on the Dutch goalie, who was dribbling around merrily thinking he was a real footballer. Portugal 2 Germany 0. Meant the locals won the competition with six points from two games. England and Germany both made four pointrs with the Oranges bottom with three
