I have only recently realised that 26th May (Corpo de Deus) and 1st November (All Saints) were restored as public holidays by announcement in January.

This means peop+le in suits toiling in schools, public offices, banks etc get a day off while the people who need one most (shops, restaurants and bars) will have to work as normal.

As for trains and buses, SUNDAY SERVICE WILL APPLY ON THESE DATES :  THURSDAY 26th MAY, FRIDAY 10th JUNE and MONDAY 15th AUGUST - the latter two were on the calendar already.

A reduced or amended service may also apply on days either side of holidays, especially for long distance trains and coaches. Do check nearer the time if planning an important trip.

What Portugal needs is a Left Wing/Communist Government because they look after the workers Wink
I hate how peopleï compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

The religious factions did this deal! All Saints was always a holiday until austerity struck in 2012.

Public holidays will only be real when shops, restaurants and bars are required to be closed so that those on minimum wage get the day off as well. I hate the idea that it's only the people who go to work wearing suits that get a day off, as is the same all over the world.

My politics - Genghis Khan was a wishy washy liberal.

A reminder that Wednesday 5th October is a public holiday (Republic Day) and the normal 'rules' apply.

Portugal does now have a left leaning government and they voted earlier this year to resore the December 1st public holiday, which I had not noticed and I suspect many others haven't also.

But it's of course mostly only those who go to work in suits who get a day off. The downtrodden low paid workers in shops, restaurants and bars will be slaving away as usual.

So we have two public holidays coming up shortly thus :

Thursday 1st December is Restoration of Independence Day
Thursday 8th December is Immaculate Conception

Banks, post offices and offices in general will be closed, trains and buses run to Sunday times and taxis charge more. Almost all shops, plus those restaurants and bars that open in December, will be open as usual.

List of holidays remainder of this year 2017 :

Thursday 5th October - Republic Day
Wednesday 1st November - All Saints
Friday 1st December - Restoration of Indepedence Day
Friday 8th December - Immaculate Conception
Monday 25th December - Christmas Day
Nb 26th December is not a holiday in Portugal.

Usual things apply, banks, post offices, schools, national and local government plus offices generally are closed. Almost everyone else works as usual. Trains, coaches and buses run to Sunday times. Taxis charge the higher fares.

December 24th - everything closes early 6 - 7pm, restaurants and bars included.
December 31st - most shops close early, 6 or 7pm maybe one or two a bit later but they never tell you until about a week beforehand.

January 1st 2018 - New Year's Day. Shops, offices etc closed, most everything else open as usual, perhaps a bit later than normal.
