Oooh Julie sharp intake of breadth. Lots of questions.

First when you say you are not residents does that also mean you don't have a residency certificate or does it mean you just don't live here full time?

When you say import a car do you mean you are going to drive it down to Portugal and just leave it here or do you mean you will have it transported by an agent from the UK?

Pre Brexit you could drive a UK car here in Portugal with few issues, technically after 12 months you should have had it registered here in Portugal but many I know did not.

Since Brexit it is way more complex as you need to apply for tax exemption otherwise you will be charged VAT for importing from outside the UK. You also need to have had the car for more than 6 months in the UK.

As you are bringing it to Portugal after 1st Jan 2021 then you need an official customs agent to complete a Customs Declaration before you apply to the Financas.

Potentially you could drive here and pretend you are taking it back with you and then register it later but all in all it's a minefield and you may just be best to buy an overpriced car here.

As you say a minefield, thank you for your response, we may just drive down and then take back when we return
