Just after 3am this morning.

Don't panic! It measured 0.9 on the scale and was at 22km depth, so the earth would not have moved. They must have some decent kit to detect something that tiny.

The more small tremors there are the less the chance of a bigun.  I don't expect earthquakes in Europe. Not the sort of thing we do. But the Lisbon quake in the 1700s was nasty.

Not the best news after arriving here this morning following a very unpleasant flight, then on arrival having to face the consequences of the house being empty for so long. Oh Well, at least we’ve escaped from the UK 🇵🇹

Jock, Portugal is classed as an earthquake region, (maybe due to the big  Lisbon quake many moons ago), even though now   many  tremors are only  very mild. so always best to have it covered on your property buildings insurance  to be on the safe side and  cover the unfortunate should it be worse.. We always had this cover when we owned, and it doesn't cost that much extra.
You can look at everyday  seismic activity per region on  https://www.ipma.pt/en/index.html  click on  seismic link.

BTW Cooknoe enjoy your stay at your place.  Have a good one .

Thanks Jayjan,
Great to be back over here. Spent a lovely evening in the Brothers Bar, and in Adega TiCosta. Tables well spread apart, mask wearing more visible than in the UK, but apart from that, the same genuinely warm welcome, and felt very safe and relaxed.
Love the fist to fist greeting which has replaced the usual handshake and kissing 👍🏼

We are overdue for the next 'big one'. There is an active fault line about 200km south of here which sees almost daily very minor tremors.

I remember a few years ago, sitting where I am now in my office chair with wheels,, feeling a distinct ground wave generated by a 6.0 event to the south.

According to the records the epicenter of the great earthquake of 1755 (8.3 0n the richter scale) was centered about 200 miles south west of cape st vincent and the resulting tusarmi (33ft high wave) destroyed lots of Albufeira. But almost detroyed all of Lisbon. So as you say Cusbar is another big due, Not yet I hope though.

Not yet, but try getting earthquake insurance!

Here some stuff of interest I think. Some slightly scary simulations!

(says that for months afterwards the population lived in fear of the Final Judgement)

A detailed look at the effect in Lagos. In Portuguese but pictures and diagrams are self explanatory.

Some investigations of the effect on the Salgados beach near Albufeira

More recently, some pictures from an earthquake measured at 7.3 on the Richter scale in 1969 which affected parts of the Algarve. Something I had missed.
