A friend returned to UK last October and left his car at my house. It failed recent MOT and is untaxed. The car isn't working and worthless. Can I have it scrapped even though it is still registered to the owner? What can I do to get rid of it legally? TIA

This was a situation I found myself in last year when a friend left his UK car outside my house. Before the car can be legally scrapped the car tax has to be paid regardless and if it's overdue a fine will be added. I paid all outstanding monies owed. I then got a form from the scrapyard in Albufeira to complete and had to post the form to the UK for the owner to sign. I then returned the signed form and car documents to the scrap yard and they then picked the car up, it was broken down. My friend received no money in return.
