There is nowhere our servants can afford to live. That's a big problem. Also, opening up a 200 room hotel is all very well (loads going up around the Algarve) but where are they going to get the staff from unless they are all live-in?.

It's a global problem. Even here in The Heelans, properties come on the market and they are bought up for holiday lets. Locals don't have a chance! During lockdown folks from London who lived in flats sold up and bought 6 bed victorian mansions up here and pushed the property prices sky high! We are also a huge tourist town. Hospitality is at the forefront and as you say staff cannot afford to buy and there is no where to rent! The Hydro do have live-in accommodation but it's limited! When we were over last October-December we got talking to staff down in the marina, a lot of them drive in from quite a distance. We were near St. Bartolemeu de Messines and some of the staff were commuting from that area!

Lisbon has already prohibited the issue of more AL licenses in many districts and there are moves that Albufeira will do the same. There are a few properties that can't be used for AL as they cannot comply with the fire regulations, including one in my block, but as you say they are rarely if ever seen for rent. The bar manager where I spend too much time lives outside of Ferreiras, around 5 miles away, because there's nowhere affordable in town.

Views across the town from Cerro D'Águia near the water tower, 27th August 2025. Yet another mansion being built on the slope between main road and marina. Vilamoura and Quarteira in the background, across the bay. The red cliffs of the Falésia beach area are prominent in this picture. Above - 'Windmill Hill' below, the apartments on the far side of the marina. Below - very expensive houses built and under construction near the oldmarket site. The crumbling remains of the ill-fated Crowne Plaza site. Another view of Windmill Hill Peak season, no-one there. Apartments across the hill, name unknown, in Rua da Gralheira. The former market site, now deserted. Páteo, a sought after area.

A few more, taken Wednesday 12th up on Cerro D´Águia during a gap between the showers! It was quite misty and murky. Holiday apartments, Rua da Gralheira ![]() Crumbling ruins of the Crowne Plaze site with choppy sea in the background. The Caliços area with the cloud covered hills in the background. The Eden resort with its 'big top' with Clube Albufeira in the middle background. The tent was blown down in the tornado event of Saturday 15th November. The building to the left was also badly damaged. Buildings of the old town. Eastwards across town. with LIDL on the left, the smaller ALDI on the right at the top of the hill. The big hotels of Montechoro centre left. Páteo. Cerro Branco or Windmill Hill

No injuries reported from that incident. It was raining very hard at the time.
