One for the ornithologists among you.
Is there something about pine trees that birds do not like? I haven't paid any attention to this among the pine trees near Albufeira, but yesterday I was cycling through a pine forest in France, along some 3.5 miles of bike path, when it dawned on me there wasn't a bird to be seen or heard. Thousands of acres of tall trees, not a sight nor sound of avian activity.

I'm not an ornithologist but there are many birds that like pine forests including some of our more common types.
Walking in pine forests in the UK I have seen various types of woodland birds like chaffinches, several members of the tit family, Woodpeckers, Jays, various owls, Nuthatch, and birds of prey. There are also types which specialise in pine cone seeds like the Crossbill. Perhaps its different in France or you've got a noisy bike!! ![]() |

Loads of birds in the pine trees at the back of us in Acoteias - Hopooe, Blackbirds, Sparrows, Jays, Blue Winged Magpies, Mistle Thrushes, Pigeons, Doves, different types of Tits, Swallows and/or Swifts + several other smaller birds that we don't know or can't identify.
There's even an Owl (type unkown) that comes most nights and has been doing so for the last 5 years. |

I hate how peopleï compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

Well maybe the birds around here know something I do not about the pines here. It's just a deathly hush in there, other than a few cicadas.

Maybe the trees are too tightly packed. If so, little or no other vegitation and no bugs for birds to feed on.

I know where some are. Some sparrows have made nests in the rafters of the local fish market! Imagine that being tolerated in certain 'elf n safety conscious countries.
As for the pines, they don't seem to be tightly packed and there are semi-open expanses, hundreds of yards across, of scrub and bushes where the trees have been felled over the years. I shall delve further into this as it's a nice day today, camera in hand to find some.

Went through again yesterday. Saw a pigeon, heard a crow, somewhere high up.
These are the forest trees. Plenty of insects, lots of grasshoppery things. More pix later. |

Some more of my Tuesday trip through the wildlife.
Elsewhere I saw two small deer run across the road and there were plenty of lizards sunning themselves today. A few gulls on the shore, still almost nothing in the trees. Even the deciduous woods to the north are very quiet.
