It's lovely and different to Albufeira. All depends what you want out of a holiday but the overall feel is less manic and crowded and some lovely beaches and islands to explore.

You can go by train - Albufeira to Faro and then change for Tavira. https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en/

I hate how peopleï compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

some trains go right through from albufeira ... 1218, 1429 and 2114 ... journey time around 70 mins .... 0933, 1138 and 1935 on the way back.
I haven`t explored the whole town, but from what I have seen, it doesn`t compare to Albufeira as a resort .... plenty good for a few visits though.

We spent 5 days in Cabanas as part of a two centre Algarve break and spent two days in Tavira. It is pleasant but I agree with Pyrman, it's not as good as Albufeira but worth a visit.

Tavira does not have a beach. You have to take a ferry across to the island. They go about every half hour during summer from a place near the bridges in town. There are no roads on the islands, everything and everyone goes by boat.
As Pyrman says, you can go by train easily enough. You can also go by bus, changing always in Faro. Times suitable for a day out thus :
weekdays
Albufeira leave 0730 - 0945 - 1045 Faro arrive 0845 - 1040 - 1200 Faro leave 0900 - 1100 -1215 Tavira arrive 1000 - 1200 - 1315
Tavira leave 1710 - 1810 Faro arrive 1810 - 1910 Faro leave 1845 - 1940 Albufeira arrive 2015 - 2030
Weekends and Holidays
From Albufeira first two buses only From Tavira at 1710 only

Tavira is definately worth a visit, as said previously much different to Albufeira but if you like it more peacful at times then this is for you, makes a wee change sometimes to have a quieter day somewhere.
