Day 1 at Parchal, lovely weather with a very tidy crowd in, particularly for the opening match ...

Portugal 1-0 Spain.
Very level game between two technical teams [who dont appear to like each other much]. In the main the sides cancelled each other out. One or two halfchances apiece, but the keepers in control. Then in the last ten minutes the Portuguese ref spotted something untoward [amongst the usual free-for-all] at a Portugal corner. Penalty. I had no idea why, neither did the Spain team. Winner duly scored. I really wish they would make the effort to appoint fully third-party officials in these things.

Germany 4-0 Denmark.
Denmark held on for half an hour but then shipped three before halftime. The second was a pass out from Denmarks no1 straight to Germanys striker ..... my granny could have shot it home. The Danes came out firing after the break and created opportunities, but a combination of nervous finishing, strong defending by Germany, and some general confusion following the slew of substitutes around the hour couldnt get them a goal. Late on a German forward strolled through for the fourth.
