Hi

I have recently moved over with my husband and 10 year old son. In order for him to register for school we have first to register with a doctor. I went into the doctor clinic just off the strip yesterday and the receptionist told me we have to register at the hospital. Is this correct? I'm not sure if I misunderstood her. Grateful for any help.

Yes it is. To get into the local equivalent of the NHS you have to go to the Centro do Saúde (Health Centre) and request the Cartão Utente - the entitlement card. You will need your proofs of residency authorisation and possibly one or two other things.

both in English. The office at the Albufeira health centre is only open weekdays.

The private clinics such as you went to are not part of the 'NHS' therefore it's nothing to do with them.

Please let us know how you get on. People often ask about this and it's useful to keep up to date.

Albufeira Health centre is just off the N395 road a short distance north of the old town centre on the way towards Ferreiras.

One of the reasons you need to register is that your son will need to prove his vaccines are up to date for the school. My 10 yr old needs some last ones done this year to keep her up to date but after that I'm not sure what she will need. If you have any school related questions you can private message me as I have 2 kids in school here

Thanks very much. We will have to get our residency sorted first in that case. Will let you know how things go.
Cheers

Thanks very much. I will no doubt have many more questions in the near future and will keep in touch. We will have to get the residency sorted before the doctor so when we get to that point I may need some more help.

Cheers
