LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEK'S GAMES Liga Nos Farense 0 - 1 Sporting as we know. Yesterday, Famalicão 0 - 1 Portimonense a win which keeps Portimonense in 9th place and eight points clear of the relegation zone with seven games remaining. They are now five games without defeat, three wins in a row. If they can keep that form they will surely be safe. Farense on the other hand have a big mountain to climb. They are 17th of 18 and five points from safety. There are games during the week as well as at the weekend Tomorrow night, Farense travel to Paços de Ferreira, ko 2000hrs. Paços de Ferrira ar fifth but on a poor run of results. One that Farense must win. On Thursday night, ko 1900hrs, Portimonense host Benfica. Benfica are third but trailing the top two by six points after losing at home to lowly Gil Vicente. The big teams might not have it all their own way after all! Despite having all the game, Benfica couldn't even score themselves, theirs was an o.g. The following round of matches sees most games on Monday 26th, except for the big match! Farense v Portimonense is scheduled for Tuesday 27th at the faintly ridiculous time of 945pm. Presumably they expect everyone to be watching the Champions league semi final beforehand. Campeonato de Portugal promotion playoffs These begin next weekend. Fixtures for the three Algarve teams are these. Fixture dates and times are affected by weekend restrictions still in force in certain areas. : Group 7 Moncarapachense v Oriental Dragon FC Monday 26th 1500hrs and Louletano v Sporting B, same time. Group 8 Amora v Olhanense Sunday 25th at 1130am |

Whoever decided Spurs should be classed as part of a "Big Six" must have one hell of a sense of humour

The money from TV deals with China and other far and middle eastern countries is far more important than having mere spectators in the stadia. Indeed, recent months have shown that fans in grounds are no longer required for the TV game. No doubt though that there will be enough people who want to to be 'entertained' to get them in. They can of course, as no longer subject to the rules that govern football within the FIFA and other world-wide structures, change the system to ensure maximum tv advertising by dividing the game into four quarters, having official time outs, unlimited substitutions and all the rest. Players won't care so long as they are getting their millions. Not having to go off to play for their national teams won't matter. Meanwhile the rest of us can get on with watching football. Until of course about ten years later when FIFA, UEFA etc bow to the inevitable and restructure their worlds, just as cricket had to in the face of India's domination of proceedings.

Pacos Ferreira 0-2 Farense, just finished tonight.
Signs of life, with two goals in the last 15 minutes seeing off Pacos, who are pursuing a spot in next seasons Conference[!!??]. Everybodys favourite Jock, Gauld, opened the scoring with a penalty. This win moves Farense up one spot to 16th. In other news, the proposed new European Super League appears to be collapsing in a foul-smelling heap.

And collapse it did. But they will be back, in some shape or form. The money from Far Eastern TV deals is too much to ignore.
Good win for Farense last night as described above, but they will need more than just that if they are to survive. The team that finishes 16th goes into a playoff with the team that finishes third in the Segunda Liga, currently Chaves from way up north. But it could be anyone of five teams currently trailing leaders Estoril, who have a nine point lead.

Other than that it's hard to say why. (I would have added the most important factor, style of play, but just at the moment that wouldn't really hold water, although even there with recent events hope once again springs.) COYS!

I always defend Tottenham on our footy forum when others describe their fans as delusional. I guess they have met you rather than the world weary Spurs fans I know, Citroen?
I admire your optimism though.

Like any business owners, football club owners want to optimise and maximise revenue and keep their shareholders happy. The big money is in the deals with TV companies, particularly in the Middle and Far East. The present system where a bad season on the field, loss of status and therefore poor cashflow is not acceptable. So for them a seat at the top table is the way ahead. Guaranteed big name entertainment for the Chinese gamblers will bring in more money than sports fans in stadia.
It won't be long before something similar is again proposed.
Look at what happened to cricket all those years ago. It wasn't long before the world authorities accepted the inevitable and dropped behind the bandwagon leaders, so as not to lose everything. Leagues in countries like Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark etc will be ready to accept whatever handout is available on the off chance that one of their teams might be invited. |

Last night, Portimonense 1 - 5 Benfica
1-0 up at half time, Portimonense were simply swept away in the second period. They are now in 10th place, seven points clear of the relegation zone with six games to play. They are not entirely free of worries, but barring a disaster should keep their place at the top table.

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES
Liga Nos The big match is tomorrow night, Farense v Portimonense. KO is 21.45hrs for some reason I do not know, other than Champions League taking priority on TV. Farense need to win or they will be drifting away into very choppy waters. Meanwhile, in the first round of the Campeonato de Portugal playoffs, little to report. Group 8 Amora 2 - 0 Olhanense not a good start. Next Sunday they go to Praiense, who won 2-0 yesterday. Group 7 involving Louletano and Moncarapachense are playing this afternoon. So another update tomorrow. How do part - time players get a Monday afternoon off? What's the problem about playing at night?? |

Well after the collapse of the European Super League Newcastle United went to one of the "Big Six" and got a late, late, late draw. Had a goal ruled out by VAR too!

Overall a pretty fair result. Portimonense hit the bar a couple of times and the Portimonense goalkeeper pulled off several fantastic saves to keep the score level. However Portimonense can do a huge favour for Farense if there can beat Rio Ave at the weekend.
Have to admit that Bryan Gauld seems to be getting better and better. If Farense do get relegated I can't see him staying. His link up play is terrific, his only flaw is that he one footed. I wonder if the likes of Braga would take a chance on him. Still think the relegation battle has a few more twists and turns. |
