Hoping Portimonense aren't one of those who are/were defaulting, Tom. Over here such a reprieve is known as 'winning the AGM Cup'.

Portimonense are showing no signs of 'distress' but others are. Aves and Vìtoria Setubal have been 'financially' demoted to the third tier or perhaps even suspended completely, while two Liga Pro clubs are 'in trouble'. A fairly big reshuffle could be needed. That ought to leave room for Olhanense to achieve their desired promotion to the Liga Pro, but I don't doubt there will be all kinds of machinations under way over the next two weeks. The fixtures are due to be announced on 28 August. To make a strange season likely even stranger, it's been announced that a 'III Liga' will be formed for 2021 / 2022 with all sorts of playoffs for the Campeonato de Portugal teams to either get into the Liga Pro or that new competition. |

Uncertain times are calling for uncertain measures it appears. Fingers crossed that the PFA running Football down there are up to the job [and lucky with it]. Being in position to issue the fixtures across the whole pyramid within two weeks is, in itself, quite a job I reckon. UEFA have probably started waving their big stick, threatening horrible things for non-compliance.

Well it was not long ago that the season started 'without' Gil Vicente who had taken their case to higher authorities. Anything is possible here!

It's been confirmed that Portimonense will remain in the Liga NOS for the coming season. They will of course be joined by Farense, promoted from the second division. It's the first time for a very long time that two Algarve teams have been in the top flight. Fixtures are due out following the ceremony tonight. The of course the TV companies must have their say. Fairly academic at this point since fans will not be admitted to matches for for the foreseeable future. All top league games are shown on live TV anyway so no-one need miss out. Like many though, I do wonder how long the smaller teams can survive with no money coming in through the gates. Unfortunately the situation regarding Olhanense is still not resolved.

Lucky old Portimonense, Tom. Under normal circumstances I'd have booked my January trip like a shot now, plus still the chance of Olhanense up a slot too! Not now though, with so many doubts surrounding flights, quarantine, insurance etc. I hope to salvage a trip with the aid of the seemingly many, frequent changes to policy/directives. But not holding my breath!

The Liga NOS season will begin on the weekend of September 19th and 20th, a week later than first thought. Portimonense will begin with a home game against Paços de Ferreira, while Farense will go to Moreirense. The Liga Pro (second division) will begin a week earlier. Fixtures have been issued without Olhanense being included. I can find no information about when the lower levels will begin although it was planned to begin the Algarve League on the first week of October.

Celtic connections ... Scottish player Ryan Gauld (Farense, formerly Sporting and Setubal) has been proposed for POY in Portugal ... Paulo Sergio, manager of Portimonense, also had a spell managing Hearts ..

Gauld certainly had a good record last season, nine goals in 21 games and finishing as Farense's top goalscorer. It will be interesting to see how he gets on against the 'big three teams' defenders. Farense's first big game is away at Benfica on the first weekend of October. The home games against FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting are all in the second half of the season, by which time they and everyone else hopes that fans will be admitted into the ground. The local derby games with Portimonense will be at Portimão over the first weekend of January and at Faro at the end of April. Portimonense will host Sporting over the weekend of 3rd / 4th October but their other two big home games will also be in the second half of the season. Without those guaranteed 9,500 sellouts they will surely be struggling for money this season.

An inauspicious start to the Liga pro season (second tier) with two games cancelled because of players testing positive. I have a bad feeling... Meanwhile the third tier (Canmpeonato de Portugal) will begin next week with several groups of 12 playing a shorted programme until early April, followed by a month of complicated playoffs. Fixtures etc on Monday although with no fans allowed it is all rather academic.

Football as it concerns some of the Algarve teams gets under way next weekend. Fixture are fairly academic so far as fans are concerned. There is no suggestion anywhere that spectators will be allowed inside stadiums. Liga Nos both on SportTV Sunday 1830 Moreirense v Farense Monday 1945 Portimonense v Paços de Ferreira Campeaonato de Portugal Group H Olhanense v Armacanenses Moncarapachense v Louletano Lagos v Amora There is no news about when the Algarve league will start. |

LAST WEEKEND'S RESULTS NEXT WEEKEND'S GAMES
Liga NOS Moreirense 2 - 0 Farense An inauspicious start for Farense. Having the goalkeeper sent off just after half time didn't help. The video showed he clearly used his hand outside the penalty area to block a shot. Portimonense 1 - 1 Paços de Ferreira Next weekend, Farense will be at home on Sunday against Nacional ko 1530hrs / 3.30pm while Portimonense travel to Barcelos to play Gil Vicente at the slightly later time of 1600hrs / 4pm. Both games live on SportTV of course and grounds still closed. Campeonato de Portugal Group H Results for Algarve teams For reasons unknown all the games involving Algarve teams were postponed and will now be played on 15th November. Also, the Armacanenses club has folded, leaving only eleven teams in the group. Next weekend is the first round of the FA Cup. Matches involving Algarve teams Sunday 27th September Olhanense SAD - Lusitano Ginásio SAD Ferreiras - Louletano Lusitano Évora - Moncarapachense Lagos received a bye. Kickoff times probably 1500hrs / 3pm (not available on official website) but as no spectators are admitted it doesn't matter. There is still no confirmed information about the Algarve League's setup or fixtures, nor of the Women's league. |
