Well I'm blowed. We watched Freesports internet, and the game just got stuck at 19 mins 30 seconds. We tried time and again, logged in and out, switched the PC on and off, nothing would make it work. It wasn't the internet speed - the screen said there was a broadcast interruption. So annoyed when we found out Portimonense had made such a great comeback. No problem at all with the Porto game later...

Indeed, excellent result for Portimonense but still lots of ground to make up. If Paços de Ferreira should win at Sporting on Friday the gap will be 8 points. The next game for Portimonense is a trip to the Azores to play Santa Clara, next Tuesday evening.

Well, Portimonense 2-2 Benfica. At halftime, 2-0 down, I wouldn't have put much on the locals against the table toppers. But a generally lacklustre Benfica nodded off and overall Portimonense deserved the draw. Their second was a 30yard worldie, not dissimilar to last weeks winner against Gil Vicente. Still plenty to do as there is a gap of 5 points to bridge across the remaining eight games. FreeSports TV coverage here in the UK was excellent btw.

I didn't watch the game but a good result. Later last night surprise package Famalicão beat FC Porto 2-1, cutting Porto's lead at the top to 1 point. Benfica play tonight and will go top if they win.

Signs of life over in Portimao this evening. A 49th minute rocket shot by Lucas Fernandes gave the home team a much needed 1-0 win over Gil Vicente. They are still in the bottom two, with another home game next, on the 10th. However that's against Benfica [will take a miracle for any points to be won from that, I feel]!

The top league here resumes on Wednesday with two games, behind closed doors of course, not that it makes much difference to most teams! 1900hrs Portimonense v Gil Vicente 2115hrs Famalicão v FC Porto Both live on Portuguese channel SportTV if you can get it. Portimonense badly need the points. They are next to bottom and six points adrift of safety with eight games remaining.

The Liga NOS, Portugal's top flight, will resume on 3rd June, slightly later than originally planned. All matches (as they always have been) will be shown live on TV. Portimonense are first up on 3rd June, at home to Gil Vicente ko 1900hrs. There is no suggestion that spectators will be admitted. So if bars are not open, people will no doubt gather in numbers at homes who have SportTV. No suggestion either that any game will be available free to air. Throughout the programme almost all games will be at night, with staggered kickoff dates and times. Only on a few occasions will any two games be played at the same time. There will be two games a week for each club, with the final round of fixtures over the weekend of 25th and 26th July.

Portugal FA confirmed yesterday that Nacional and Farense will be promoted from Liga Pro, which will not resume. Clubs in Liga pro will receive a small financial compensation in respect of revenue in unplayed matches. Two teams will be relegated from Liga Pro to be replaced by the two best performing teams from the suspended third tier based on %age at the time it was stopped. Thus Olhanense miss out by the slenderest of margins. However, the meeting yesterday also confirmed that the Liga NOS will resume and they intend to complete the fixtures, so relegation at the moment would still be on the cards. The top league was only recently reduced from 20 to 18 teams so going back to 20 probably won't happen as it merely adds several more meaningless games to the season. The final stages of the Portugal FA Cup are also planned to be completed.

Toms update has come to pass …… Farense have announced today that they have been promoted to Liga 1. At this point I can find nothing regarding Portimonense, who are leading candidates for relegation from 1. Maybe the FA will elect to expand the top division by not sending any teams down.

Copy pf post made elsewhere earlier : On Tuesday there will be an EGM of the Portuguese league management
to discuss the possible resumption and conclusion of the 2019 / 2020
football season (for the top two leagues only) that will be permitted
from 29th May. Correction / update - it seems
that the LPF has already decided that the second league will not be
completed. The 'current' leaders Nacional and Farense are expected to be
promoted to the Liga NOS (top level) to replace the two relegated from
that if and when it finishes. |

The PFA has formally announced that the third tier of national football, the Campeonato de Portugal, has been terminated with positions 'as they were' at the time the last game was played. Olhanense have objected as they had a chance of finishing top of their league. They are demanding a playoff at some point before next season begins.

ALL football in Portugal is now suspended until further notice. Many teams here play in stadiums owned by local councils which have decided to close them.

In addition, all games in the top two divisions (for the Algarve that means Portimonense and Farense) will be played behind closed doors. Third tier matches (Campeonato de Portugal) will go ahead as usual for the time being, but with attendance limited to maximum 5,000. Won't be an issue as few teams even get 500.
