The chances are you couldn't buy it even if you wanted to Teresa. A Portuguese friend told me, in the case of old properties, that it is due to Portuguese inheritance law. The deceased has to leave their estate to their children equally, even if they don't wish to. In some cases siblings don't get on and refuse the other(s) the right to occupy the house or refuse co-operate on the sale of the property. Often one child has disappeared abroad and cannot be contacted, so an impasse is reached (there must be a statute of limitations, but I assume it is a long, long time). In the case of modern places like Crown Plaza, Oceano and the mess above the shops on the easter side of Avenida da Liberdade, it is usually developers going bust or failing to obtain the correct construction licences. This is what I was told, if anyone knows better please put me straight. As a Brit criticising ridiculous political decisions made by other countries is, I know, the height of irony, but the Portuguese law makers really need to sort all this out.

Just scrolling through posts and found this... how sad! Could be such a beautiful property. I know people who live near the marina and there are abandoned properties near their home as well. We never see properties abandoned here in Canada (at least, I haven't) and especially not in such a beautiful location! With or without a direct view of the ocean, just the proximity to the beaches, cliffs, town makes it incredible to me that the properties are left to rot! Do these properties not hold their value? I think I know where this is located and I would've thought this would be prime location for a business, AirBnb or a home. Does the property value truly not warrant the cost of repairs?
I wish I could buy it! lol I only need to win a lottery! :D |

Well whoever owns it had better make up their minds soon, or the the thing will become really dangerous and be demolished by the council as a danger to public safety.

Not sure about the roof.
Talk is a Welsh family bought it a few years ago but unfortunately he died and the family can’t decide what to do with it.

The section of roof that is missing is obviously the bit they removed as it was unsafe.
I was told that people sat outside Tunes were clapping and cheering as it fell inwards. |

I was told the ruin next to Casa del Mar is owned by a Dutch guy who purchased it for €400,000. When part of the roof was looking very unsafe a few years ago someone turned up and collapsed part of it. I agree the views would be fantastic and I think it has a gate at the side where access to parking could be created as long as you don’t want to park a wide car.

None at all Jock. I didn't pay attention to the Vende-se sign the other day, whether it was still there or not. Prime site but no parking, so could really only become a restaurant I guess. As if more were needed up there. I will try to remember to have a better look when out tomorrow.

There is a ruin on Miguel Bombarda next to Casa del Mar which is partly roofless and probably ruined inside. Been empty a long time. Street View dated 7/2019 has a Vendido/sold sign on the door. It must have a great sea view. Has there been any sign of restoration?

It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear. Douglas Adams

No doubt the rent was too much. The interiors were substantially completed but wiring is now being ripped out and windows broken by vandals.

Thousands of people wait in the sun here for all kinds of buses ... always thought a wee cafe would do wonders ... even an ice-cream vendor ..
