IMORTAL 1 - 0 MESSINENSE

Poor end of season stuff, in which Imortal dominated for almost the whole game without finding a way to break the visitors massed defence. The winning goal was a well worked free kick five minutes before the end of normal time, giving Imortal their first win of the second phase at the seventh attempt.

The afternoon was sunny until a few minutes before the end when it rained, and it was quite windy, the ball was not easy to flight. Passing was rather wayward at times. Chances to score were few and far between, the teams managing only six attempts on target between them.

The first chance went to Imortal's wing back Tidjeane, a free kick which he completely wasted by kicking it straight at the ´keeper. Imortal's only other decent first half chacne fell to Cascalvo, but he slipped as he shot, the ´keeper saved easily. Oliveira and Flavinho were as poor as they were in Wednesday's cup tie, they just couldn't get into the game. 0-0 at the interval after an uninspiring 45 minutes.

Messinense started the second half with the wind slightly in their favour, they maanged some half decent midfield play but did nothing with it. Tidjeane was booked for a foul after 10 minutes, then  Imortal regained control. Flavinho was robbed by a nasty bounce, Oliveria collided with the goalkeeper chasing a through ball. He didn't know he was offside and it hurt! As the sky darkened and the rain began to fall, Messinense had a few moments and actually managed a couple of 'shots' but neither worried Imortal 'keeper Pereira in the least.

A wild effort by Flavinho on 26 minutes was Imortal's first shot of the half. Tidjeane sent in a long range swerving shot that tested the visitor's goalie, who then decided he needed a rest. That's two goalkeepers this week who claimed to have cramp!

Forty minutes had passed, a goal was looking very improbable. Imortal were awarded a free kick wide right, which was taken by Cascalvo, the scorer of the two free kicks on Wednesday. He floated the ball to the far post where it was met by the head of sub Mamadu Baldé, perhaps the smallest player on the field. His header from 5 metres was low and accurate, goal scored!

Five minutes were added, nothing more happened.

Imortal's next game is this coming Saturday at home to promotion outsiders Silves, ko 1600hrs / 4pm

Imortal 2 - 1 Silves

A nice sunny afternoon, a bit windy at times, pitch in excellent shape.

Imortal held on for win in an eventful game in which even one of the ball 'boys' was sent off. Silves were six points behind leaders Ferreiras at the start of play. When word came through that Ferreiras were losing and with the score here 2-1,  they threw everything at Imortal in a frantic last twenty minutes. But to no avail.

Imortal had the better of the first half from the off, when a deep cross by Chico, who had a very good game, was headed by a defender against his own crossbar. He followed that with a shot which was straight at the goalkeeper, then set up Oliveira with a great pass, but the shot just skimmed over the bar. Silves almost scored a lucky goal  on twelve minutes when Imortal 'keeper Pereira completely misjudged  a floated free kick that hit the far post and bounced just past two onrushing forwards with no-one else moving.

The game settled into a midfield struggle, players running about, going up and down, lots of petty fouls, with no scoring chances created.

Just before the interval Imortal did have a couple of moments, first Cassiano headed straight at the goalkeeper from 5 yards after a good clearance by Pereira  to Tidjeane on the right wing, who made a great run past two defenders and put in a good cross.  Moments later came the first goal. Cassiano turned provider down the left wing, a good low cross to the far post wasn't dealt with and Oliveira was on hand to score from close range. Video clip - https://pt-pt.facebook.com/imortalfans/videos/1845747052113803/ - 1-0 to Imortal at half time.

Silves were very slow coming out for the second half and looked to be still receiving the team talk when Imortal went further ahead just two minutes in.  Defenders were all over the place as Chico chipped a neat pass over them to Cassiano, who finished with a good low and hard shot from just inside the penalty area.

Silves responded, Pereira made a good save in his first action for a long time. News that Ferreiras were behind came in, Silves cranked up the pressure but some wild finishing let them down. Silves attacked non stop, they were getting ratty even when being awarded free kicks.  A potential game changing incident in the 26th minute of the second saw Oliveira getting booked for a poor challenge then arguing about it, resulting in him being sent off.

Right from the re-start, Silves surged forward and caught Imortal's defence on the back foot. A ball across the box was not cleared, Olmeira prodded home from close range in a replica of Imortal's opener.

Chico was subbed to make the defence stronger. Silves pressed and pressed, dominating the game but got nowhere. Every clearance by the host's defence was being cheered. Imortal were now employing every trick in the book to break the flow of play, even the ball boys (old and young) were getting their instructions. Free kicks abounded, mostly for minor fouls committed by Imortal. Pereira was booked for time wasting, then just before the end of the normal 90 minutes an older ball boy gathered the spheroid a few yards behind the goal-line and threw it away as a desperate Silves player dashed towards him. There was pushing and shoving, hands were raised, which ended up with a red card for the Silves player and the ball 'boy' being told to remove himself from the pitch.

Pereira made a great catch to deny a mass of opponents just before eight minutes of added time was announced. Such had been the nature of the game, the first and only corner of the second half was not until five of those eight minutes had elapsed. Silves created nine chances at goal in that second half, with only that one success.

Imortal can be pleased with taking four points off the second placed team in this second phase. Silves have now only a mathematical chance of the title and promotion, but that would require Ferreiras to lose both their remaining games and Silves to win both. Unlikely.

Imortal's next game is away at Lagos next Saturday, ko time unknown as fixtures are not yet on the Algarve FA website.

LAGOS 4 - 3 IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA

A stoppage time winner gave Lagos the points in an end to end game, an entertaining match, not the usual end of season affair. Both teams were guilty of horrible mistakes, gifting goals to the opposition. That and the gusting wind making the ball do tricks, made for an eventful afternoon for the small crowd of around 60.

Imortal came back from 2-0 down to level, went behind once more equalised again with 15 minutes remaining but could not hold on.

Imortal kicked off into the wind. Lagos made a good start, forcing three corners in the first ten minutes. The game swung from end to end with, remarkably, fewer free kicks than shots during the first half. The first of the giveaways came on 15 minutes when Lagos inexplicably sent a free kick on halfway straight to the feet of Imortal striker Flavinho. Rather startled perhaps, he shot off towards goal but ultimately his shot was weak and easily saved. Chances came and went. Cassioano had two decent efforts saved by Lagos 'keeper Candeias, then he headed over from 5 yards when totally unmarked. Pereira, in goal for Imortal tipped a shot onto a post and safety, a good sliding tackle by hard working midfielder Mateus stopped an attack dead in its tracks. As the radio commentator said, it was a good competitive game, one that Lagos could not afford to lose if they wanted to finish second.

The breakthrough and first goal for Lagos came on 35 minutes. A long cross was floated over from the right wing, Imortal's defence left it to each other and Chamusca was on hand to score on the far post. The second was shortly after,  Imortal were defending too high up the pitch when a through ball out of defence found Jorge Teixeira in acres of space just inside the Imortal half. He raced off towards goal, unopposed and scored with a nice low shot.

That lead was not to last long. Almost from the re-start, Imortal were on the attack. A deep cross was held up by the wind, Mateus headed it gently back the way it had come, Elvis was alert enough to run onto the loose ball and score from just inside the penalty area. Half time 2-1 to Lagos.

Imortal came out early for the second half and it looked as if Lagos were still in the changing rooms as within a minute it was 2-2. Chico, who again had a good game in midfield, latched onto a poor pass, threaded a pass through to Mateus who calmly shot low and hard past Candeias.

Lagos responded and restored their lead within five minutes. Imortal's defence was all over the place, leaving Texeira unmarked in front of goal. He didn't miss. Pereira was not happy.

Back it went to the other end, Cassiano was a boot size too small to convert a very good cross from Flavinho. The wind wasn't helping Imortal much, as is often the case passes were over-hit as the wind grew stronger.

Imortal pressed, a penalty came their way when Cascalvo was brought down. No big arguments, Tidjeane converted the spot kick to make it 3-3 with twenty minutes remaining.

Texeira should have wrapped it up for Lagis but he took too long over his shot, defenders en masse blocked his effort. Both teams strove for the winner, defending became a bit desperate in the closing minutes. Cassiano had half a chance on 45 minutes but the wind took a free kick away from him, he didn't know where the ball was and the opportunity was lost.

Lagos' winner came after two minutes of added time. Elvis, the goalscorer and who had been playing in midfield, had been moved back into defence following a series of substitutions. He failed to deal with a cross, presenting the ball to Texeira who couldn't miss from his place almost on the goal-line. it could have been worse. A minute later Tidjeane was booked for a foul, the resulting free kick hit the post and bounced away. That was the final kick of the game.

Match stats

Free kicks Conceded : Imortal 9, Lagos 12 plus the penalty

Imortal Albufeira 0 - 3 Silves

A poor first half performance and and an even worse ten minutes or so in the middle of that half cost imortal dearly. Defence was all over the place. It was a much better second period ,but Silves went into mass defence mode and kept everything under control.

The game could have started in fine style for Imortal, a long range effort in the first minute by Mateus had to be tipped over the bar. After that it was up and down, up and down to no effect until the 20th minute when a free kick well taken by Cascalvo was headed just wide by Maia at the far post.

The rot started a couple of minutes later. A contentious free kick (one of many!) was awarded to Silves on the edge of the area and expertly taken by Matias, given Nélio Pereira in the Imortal goal no chance. Two minutes later it was two-nil. Some poor defending failed to clear the ball, the attempted clearance fell to Matias who placed his shot neatly into the corner of the net, again giving Pereira no chance.

It became three-nil after another bit of defensive chaos resulted in a short cross to Sequeira, unmarked on the far post for an easy tap-in.

That forced management into an early substitution. The experiment perhaps of playing Maia at right back hadn't worked, he was replaced by Tidjeane. There was time before the interval for Mateus to have a shot blocked, but it was a fairly forlorn lot that trooped off at half time.

Whatever was said during the break worked. Imortal came out with much more purpose. An early chance fell to captain Pedro Rodrigues but he headed over. Left back Mamadu Baldé set up Oliveira but his his header from close range bounced up too hard and went over the bar. The Silves defence was packed and the free kick count getting ridiculous, there were twenty in the second half, mostly for petty stuff assisted by the customary theatrics. After two bookings in swift succession, including Cascalvo who retaliated after being hacked down, Imortal's Flavinho embarked on a long tirade at the referee and had to be calmed down.

Imortal had all the possession in the last twenty minutes but couldn't break down the defensive Silves.

On a brighter note, the ground is looking good with a lot of new advertising and presumably sponsorship to go with that. Most of the players are from last season, there are a couple of new faces to keep an eye on in future games when we hope they will make their mark.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 22, Silves 12
Offside : Imortal 2, Silves 0
Shots on target : Imortal 6, Silves 3
Shots off target : Imortal 6, Silves 2
Shots blocked : Imortal 3, Silves 1
Corners : Imortal 3, Silves 0
Yellow cards : three each. No reds.

Imortal's next game is the long trip to Vila Real de Santo António to play Lusitano next Saturday.

Good 1-0 win today at Lusitano Vila Real but still there as train 30 minutes late. Vandals have attacked several trains causing a shortage of stock. This one is heavily painted but now at least mobile!

LUSITANO VRSA 0 - 1 IMORTAL ALBUFEIRA

A welcome win after last week's disappointing performance. It was hard work at times against very poor opposition, who threatened the Imortal goal not once. Weather sunny and warm, a bit windy at times. Crowd about 70.

The one goal in the game came on 31 minutes. For much of time before that, the home fans had been bemoaning their teams' inability to string more than two passes together and keep the ball. From one such moment, Imortal seized the spheroid and scored. Lusitano had broken up an attack, but dawdled on the half way line. Paullo Oliveira nipped in with the kind of shoulder to shoulder challenge that is normally penalsied here, spun round and shot off towards goal. He had Tidjeane and Betinho in support. Defenders were outnumbered, Oliveira slid the ball sideways to Betinho who scored with a low hard shot across the 'keeper.

Imortal had started well and nearly scored in the first minute. A huge throw from wing back Mamadu Balde´s spring loaded arms found Oliveira in the box but his back header bounced off the top of the goal and to safety. Oliveira thought he had scored a couple of minutes before the successful move, but was adjudged offside to much ire from Imortal's bench. A bit of 'dodgy keeper' play, the ball slipping through his hands had given Imortal a corner which first Betinho then Oliveira had a go at.

The hosts managed just one attempt at goal in the first half, a feeble effort trapped with no effort by Pereira in goal. Defenders Mamadu Baldé and Tidjeane (starting at right back) dealt easily with everything coming at them, captain Pedro Rodrigues was on hand with some very smart headed interceptions and clearances.

Lusitano did put in a bit more effort after the break, difficult not to. Pereira was clattered early on, taking a couple of minutes to get back on his feet. It took another quarter hour before he was brought into 'action', stopping another poor shot,  then immediately sending Oliveira steaming up the field with a great throw. His shot at the end of the run went just wide, then Mamadu Baldé hit a free kick amid a great shout of 'goooool' from the bench until they realised it had gone into the side netting and everyone sat down a bit embarrassed!  Lusitano gained their first and only corner with fifteen minutes left. Pereira woke from his slumbers to deal with another sad effort.

Mamadu Baldé was forced off with a strain, replaced by Fábio whose first contribution was a long range shot that was tipped over the bar for a corner. Imortal continued to dominate. Oliveira went down after a heavy challenge and decided to have a sit down, which gave everyone the chance for a team talk with ten minutes remaining - they thought!  Ninety minutes came and went, the ref  announced seven minutes extra.  Imortal immediately replaced the hard working midfielder Mateus with Willians, just for some fresh legs. Oliveira then took a clearance straight in the face, meaning more time added while he was sorted out. The game was now very scrappy, but Imortal worked hard in the final minutes to keep control and nullify any threat.

Match stats

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 13, Lusitano 14
Offside : Imortal 3, Lusitano 1
Shots on target : Imortal 4, Lusitano 2
Shots off target : Imortal 3, Lusitano 4
Shots blocked : Imortal 1, Lusitano 1

I have just seen a video of the Imortal goal from yesterday. Great run, great determination and control, aided and abetted by some half hearted defending. But you have to buy a ticket to win the raffle...

Indeed it was, the highlight of the game. Good job too!

Imortal 1 - 0 Lagoa

A strange game. I wasn't sure whether Lagoa were being ultra-defensive or whether they were just inept, but they didn't have a shot of any description until we were into added time at the end of the match! At one point, when Imortal were awarded a corner, I saw ten of their players inside the six yard box waiting for the kick. Bemused Imortal players stood at the edge of the penalty area, wondering what to do.

The weather was windy and a bit cloudy, the crowd reasonably decent for this league at around 100. The pitch was a little soggy in parts after recent rain.

The only goal of the game came mid-way through the second half and a good one it was too. Paollo Oliveira, who had a good game overall, robbed an opponent wide out on the right, beat three defenders as he bore into the penalty area and rounded off a fine run with a crashing shot into the roof of the net. Nothing the goalkeeper could do.

In contrast, Nélio Pereira in Imortal's goal was a spectator until the final moments of the match.

Imortal started well as they have done recently, Rodrigues headed just over from a corner and a free kick from Tidjeane was just wide. Oliveira and the hard working Mateus combined well to set up a chance for the latter, but goalkeeper Alemão dived and just got to the low cross. The first half ended in a flurry of free kicks, mostly against Imortal, but nothing happened and it stayed goal-less at the break.

Imortal came out early for the second half. It was Lagoa who looked sharper in midfield at least, but woeful passing meant their attacks came to naught. After one such breakdown, Imortal counter attacked and were thwarted by a clear handball on the edge of the penalty area. Yellow card issued, but Baldé put the kick wide.

Lagoa did fashion one half chance when a cross was floated in from a free kick, but two of their players going for the same ball collided, leaving Pereira to gather the loose ball. A change of formation followed for Imortal, with Baldé being replaced by the more attack minded Willians. Reward was soon to come, more pressure was put on Lagoa and Oliveira's goal put the home side into the lead.

The game settled back into the pattern of Imortal having the ball and sometimes losing it, sub Fábio came on for Mateus and within a minute was booked for a foul. Rodrigues was also booked, harshly said the crowd. A melée sprung up as we went into stoppage time. It resulted in Tidjeane certainly being booked and possibly one or two Lagoa players but from so far away it was hard to see who the ref was waving his card at.

Four minutes extra was announced. Shock of the day was Lagoa's first shot, which was miles over, then came a slightly scary moment when a second attempt was scuffed, almost sending Pereira the wrong way but he recovered to push the ball around the post for a corner. Time was running out, it would have been the least deserved equaliser in football history had the ball actually been delivered anywhere useful, but it wasn't.

Not the best game ever seen, but three points are three points. Next Saturday Imortal go up the road to Messines and their synthetic pitch.
