GD Montemôr 0 - 2 Imortal Albufeira

No way to get there at the weekend. Away games might as well be on the moon, except for just a couple! There may be more on Imortal's facebook page but that is no longer available to non-Facebook persons like me.

Imortal took the lead in the 14th minute with a goal by Mario Duarte but had to wait until ten minutes before the end for the second, scored by sub Mateus Vieira. The game saw a debut in goal for  Hans Freitas, with Nélio Pereira suspended after his sending off last week. Freitas managed to get booked.

Poor performance by the ref, only four yellows in the first half, five in the second.  The home team won 5-4 on yelllows.

Imortal remain fourth in the League. Their next league game is not until 28th November when they travel to top side Olhanense That's one I will be able to get to!

Befor that comes the short trip to Estombar on Wednesday evening to meet Carvoeiro United in the Algarve Cup. Undoubtedly the second string players will form most of the team.

BING BONG LATE FIXTURE CHANGE!!

For reasons unknown, Imortal's game v Olhanense on Sunday will now be played at our place, ko 3pm / 1500hrs. Nice to let us know.

The Algarve Cup games that were supposed to be played on December 1st have re-appeared on the fixture list.

Imortal will be away to Portimonense B at the highly inconvenient time of 5.30pm! It being a holiday there are no buses back to Albufeira after 16.55 and no train until 20.34.

Imortal Albufeira 1 - 2 Olhanense

A close game, Olhanense scoring in the 89th minute of normal time to grab the points. It wasn't a good game on a windy day. There were few scoring chances created. A reasonable crowd was on hand of about 250, not bad considering the late change of venue and including about 50 from Olhão.

The police were enforcing mask wearing on arrival, but once the game started ignored a group of Olhanense ultras who were not obeying the law. The FPF has increased the admission charge to €5!

Olhanese started with an attacking formation, often with five players up front. In vontrast, Imortal packed the midfield, playing with only two attackers. Both teams defended corners and set pieces with all eleven players in their own penalty area.

It took until the mid point of the first half for either side to create a goal scoring opportunity. Imoral's striker Duarte was way off target with a header from fairly close range. Moments later, Tidjane Baldé had a good shot blocked.

Olhanense responded. A long range effort by João Nobrega was pushed around the post low down by ´keeper Freitas.  Back at the other end, Portela had the ball at his feet for ages just outside the six yard box but perhaps couldn't decide what to do and lost possession. The game was end to end at this point, but with nothing much being achieved.  The visitors should have gone ahead on the half hour, but Matos totally failed to react to a good low cross with the goal at his mercy.

Mateus Vieira (Imortal) had a good shot stopped, then right on half time Baldé sent in a very decent cross which Duarte managed to scoop over the bar from three yards. But then over the weekend we have seen players of a higher standard doing much the same! 0-0 at half time.

Olhanense came out with some purpose after the break, but the opening goal went to imortal. Eight minutes in, Bruno Torres was hacked down just outside the Olhanense penalty area, on the angle. Torres took the free kick which Duarte headed home from close range, atoning for his earlier howler.

The lead lasted only a few minutes.  With the wind in their favour, Olhanense launched an attack down the left wing. João Nobrega sent in the cross which was deflected behind Imortal's defensive line. Matos was the first to react, stabbing the ball into the net from close in. There were some half hearted apeals for offside but nothing doing. Olhanense built on that, causing problesm in the home defence. Centre back Calado found himself with two opponents heading towards him and the ball, but in their zeal they managed to foul him! Williams Fadini made a last ditch sliding tackle to foil another attack.

Imortl went back on the offensive, Macedo having a hard shot parried back into the melée. The ball seemed to bounce around for ages before being seized by the ´keeper. Imortal's defender Tavares became the first player to see yellow for preventing him clearing the ball. Yes, seventy two minutes before the first booking. Some kind of record?

That peace did not last, there were three more yellow cards in the next ten minutes as things got a little tetchy. Imortal were often trying to play the ball out from the back when a hoof upfield might have been better. They rode their luck a bit until the 89th minute.

Another bit of defensive hestitancy and indecision ended up with Freitas sliding out of the penalty area with the ball in his hands. Just his momentum, nothing intentional, but a free kick nevertheless. It was just outside the penalty areato the left of the goal, about five yards in from the goal-line.

I don't know if Imortal's defence was not quite ready, but when the kick was lobbed over to the far post no-one moved except for Sergio Semedo, on hand to bundle the ball over the line. Olhanense celebrated as it the World Cup had been won. One of their coaching staff was booked for overdoing it.

There was still time for a sending off. Right over on the furthest corner of the ground from where I was, a fracas broke out with punches thrown. An Imortal player went down hard, the referee showed red to Zokhoi Djoulou who trudged off slowly right around the pitch. Baldé was booked for his contribution.

Game over, 2 - 1 to Olhanense but a game that could have gone either way. Olhanense stay top, Imortal are now sixth.

I was dancing in the streets!  Sandro Cabral is not renowned for his goal scoring and doesn't usually start league matches.

Not all the results are yet on the website, but Ferreiras also won 5-0 and join Imortal in the third round.

Think two were penalties and the third was a cracking header on a cross from the left.

First half Portimonense had a lot of possession without really threatening. Imortal had a few counter attacks where #70 was way too quick for the right back but nothing came of them. First penalty was just before half time but too far away to tell what happened other than there were 2 or 3 defenders around the attacker and ref gave penalty.

Early in second half right back #33 (Abreu?) headed goal at back post on cross from the right (maybe a corner or recycling of corner don't recall).

Cabral (#45)  then added a third with an impressive leap to get his bullet header under the bar

Second penalty was when #11, who had some impressive slide tackles in the middle of the park, went round the defender on the right side of the box and was taken out.

Neat one two on right wing released late substitute #90 who delivered a nice ball along the ground for I think #8 to score in stoppage time (may have been Cabral if someone else took one of the penalties)

Thanks for that. Having no car and with so few buses etc it was impossible for me to make thr trip.

Number 8 is Mateus Vieira, a useful midfielder who has been playing a lot recently. 11 is Luis Almeda, usually a sub for league games. 33 is indeed Hugo Abreu, who also doesn't usually get a game. Number 90 must be one of the juniors, he's not on the sqaud list.

Yeah they were all enthusiastically congratulating #90 and he looked pretty young so would assume you're right.

One thing I didn't mention was the bizarre crowd - I've been over to that stadium a couple of times and always stood outside behind the goal and most people were out there to watch and smoke while there were a decent few in the little stand inside. On Wednesday there were less than 10 people in the stand - 4 GNR/policia (when the rain started) and 3-4 who went in to the changing rooms at half time so assume members of one of the teams and 1 actual spectator....a light shower in first half had everyone behind the goal heading up to a sheltered, elevated walkway in front of the apartment building behind the goal....not sure if they were enforcing the testing requirement or charging an entrance fee nobody wanted to pay...seemed weird as there were probably 100-150 watching but nobody in the ground!

I have been to Algarve Cup matches before where no admission was charged. It is decidedly low key in the early rounds.

Testing is not required unless more than 5,000 are expected at an event. That will not trouble most of the teams in the top league and none in the second. Clubs have the option of limiting ticket sales to 4,999 thus fans would not have to pay for a test.

Imortal 0 Lagos 0

It's going to be a long season unless Imortal improve, especially in the goalscoring department. They have scored only seven goals in eight league games, four of which have been drawn. Last night, they managed only one effort on target, which wasn't until the 89th minute. It could easily have been three-nil the other way had it not been for excellent work in goal by Nélio Pereira.

And the game as shown live on TV! Canal 11, who show anything no-one else wants, had themselves there. I wonder what any TV audience (if there was one) thought about it.

The stadium was almost empty, probably around 80 in the stands and not many fewer down on the pitch, including the three GNR who were scanning the assembly looking for those without masks. (It's now required to show a vaccination certifcate along with photo ID to enter the stadium. Absurd when you think it holds around 3,000 and I sat no closer than 10 metres from anyone. I can sit in a crowded bar for twice as long and not have to put up with that.)

Anyway, off to the game. Sandro Cabral was rewarded for his mid week cup hat-trick with a starting place. Unfortunately his contributions were limited to going down screaming two or three times, each being ignored by the referee and tellingly by his team-mates. Imortal really were poor going forward. Too much deliberation, poor final ball and a general lack of awareness. It wasn't until the final 20 minutes or so, after Lagos had been reduced to ten men following a red card for Pedro Duarte, that they showed any sense of urgency. Too little, too late.

Imortal did manage a couple of early efforts, both went wide. Duarte collected the first of his yellow cards for a rugby tackle. Lagos managed a few attacks, Pereira saved a close range header,  two more ended with woeful shots. Another Lagos player, Alexio, was booked for administering an elbow in the face of Fadini. Imortal had switched to a three man front line to exert more pressure on Lagos' back three, but they are very tall and also mobile, snuffing out any threat easily.

Imortal did manage a decent attack early in the second half. A god run down the left by Fadini, he put in a deep cross over to Mario Duarte whose header found Vieira six yards but the defenders closed him down before he could shoot.

The other Duarte, he of Lagos, then became the centre of attention for a couple of minutes.  Imortal's Bruno Torres was booked for a bit of a rough challenge on him. Barely two minutes later, Duarte tried to exact revenge but all he got was a second yellow. That left Lagos with half an hour play with ten men on the field.

The game had reverted to type, with free kicks every couple of minutes. Imortal couldn't put two passes together and frequently lost the ball far too easily in midfield. From one of those, a long range shot nearly caught Pereira off guard but he recovered to make a fine tip over save.

Lagos were happy to sit back and make the occasional counter attack, while Imortal struggled to produce. Lagos' goalkeeper Nhayson Rosa decided to have a little sit down when Imortal did finally string some moves together, just to break up the momentum.

Three minutes before the end of the 90 Macedo finished one Imortal attack with a wild shot. Imortal then won a corner (their second of the game) which produced the first and only goal-bound effort. Centre back  Rodrigues got his head to the ball a few yards out, but the´keeper was alert and smothered the header well.

There was an audible groan when five added minutes were shown. There was still time for Pereira to make one more save, low down, to keep the clean sheet.

Match statistics

Free kicks conceded : Imortal 14, Lagos 20
Offside : Imortal 2,  Lagos 2
Shots on target : Imortal 1, Lagos 5.
Shots off target : Imortal 5, Lagos 4
Shots blocked : none
Corners : Imortal 2, Lagos 5
Yellow cards : Imortal 2, Lagos 2
Red Cards : Lagos 1

Imortal stay 6th of ten teams, ten points from eight games.

Imortal's next game is on Sunday 11th away up at Barreirense (other side of the river to Lisbon) who stand eighth with seven points and only six goals scored. 0-0 written all over it.

Needless to say travel on a Sunday to such places is impracticable by train, so I shall have to content myself with what's on TV that afternoon.

Angry Imortal's away game v Louletano next weekend has been moved to Monday night (20th) so what would have been a difficult trip to the Algarve Stadium now becomes impossible.
