Imortal 1 - 2 Quarteira SC

Algarve Cup First Round

This was a game that Imortal couid and should have won. However statistics can lie. Although they had the major share of possession and had a good number of goal scoring opportunities there was no finishing power. The only Imortal goal came five minutes into added time, by which time it was a lost cause. Quarteira took an early lead and defended in numbers, not being afraid to resort to the big boot upfield when called for.

The second Quarteira goal was a penalty mid-way through the second half, which also saw the dismissal of defender Luis Santos.

The opening goal came after 12 minutes and was of Imortal's making.  A horrible clearance by 'keeper David Mendonça was collected in midfield and two passes later striker Ricardo Oleirinha had an easy task from a few metres out with Imortal's defenders struggling to get into position.

Recovering from that blow, Imortal worked their way back into the game but, despite forcing six corners in fairly short order, failed to make anything of them. The visitors were content to sit back and take the blows. When they did threaten, which was rarely, Imortal's captain and centre back Rodrigues kept things under control.

A half chance went Imortal's way just before half time but all that came of it was a yellow card for Tidjane Baldé. He was set free down the left, out came the ´keeper and there was a collision. The ´keeper of course made every bit of it and Tidjane was booked.

The second half was almost all Imortal, but the lack of a goalscorer was blindingly obvious. There were ten decent shots on goal and six corners in the second period but that one very late goal to show for it. The half started well enough, Bruno Pereira hitting the angle of post and crossbar in the first minute. He was berated later for not attacking the ball enough and was subbed.

Quarteira had one breakaway attack from which they should have scored but two players got in each other's way and lost the ball. We then had a short interruption when the automatic sprinklers came on. Some one had obviously forgotten to close down the program. It was a couple of minutes before they could be turned off.

Shortly after that came the penalty incident. Santos found himself last man and wrestled an opponent to the ground. Few complaints. The penalty was initially saved but the rebound fell nicely for the taker, Karolo Ponte. Two - nil.

Imortal piled everything forwards. Chico, on as sub, was heavily involved with his accurate passing. Twice he set up Tidjane Baldé but twice he failed. Baldé then blasted a free kick just over the bar before six minutes added time was announced.

A couple minutes into the added time, Imortal gained a free kick on the edge of the area. After the customary arguments and general chaos had subsided, Rodrigues hit it well but straight at the ´keeper.

Time was running out when Baldé collected a floated cross and smacked it in from close range. There was only enough time left for Quarteira to kick off, draw a foul which saw Flavinho booked and they ran down the clock and took the win.

Imortal will be at home again on Saturday, a league game v Lagoa, ko 1500hrs / 3pm

Imortal 0 - 0 Lagoa

Awful game, truly awful. Lagoa not so much as parked a bus but a whole fleet of them. They mustered only one shot in the whole game, which I could have stopped without difficulty. Imortal's coaching team were left banging their heads in frustration at the end. Imortal were up against only nine men for what turned out to be last ten minutes. Lagoa's goalkeeper Santos was injured, they had already made all their subs so an outfield player went in goal. Then one of them was sent off, but still Imortal couldn't create anything more than a half chance.

Imortal made changes from both last week's league game and Wednesday's cup match. With Flavinho suspended and Bruno Pereira dropped, in came Elvis Udokporo and 'new signing' Marcio Ramos into the forward line. Ramos had been with Imortal as junior and has re-joined the club after being away óut of country'.

The first half was literally almost nothing to write about. An early chance almost fell to Tidjane Baldé from a cross by Udokporo but the ´keeper grabbed it just in time. It was halfway through the half before a shot on target was mustered, but Pelé shot straight at the´keeper, easy stop. After a two minute stoppage for Santos to change his boots, Imortal did exert some pressure. There was good work in particular from Tidjane Baldé in midfield but his team-mates were far too tentative in the approach to goal.  Ten passes when one would have done. Just on half time a free kick by Ramos from the edge of the penalty area was sent just a little too high.

Words were obviously said during the interval. Imortal came out flying, a great run by Udokporo down the left started proceedings. He cut inside two defenders forcing Santos to save with his legs. A later similar run was ended ignominiously when he trod on the ball and fell over. After another half chance was spurned, he was subbed on the hour. His replacement was Bruno Pereira. Maybe the idea was for a greater presence in the penalty area. Didn't work, he was pretty anonymous apart from just failing to connect with a spinning rebound after a shot by Ramos was blocked on the line.  A free kick by Umaro Baldé was saved, Pedro Rodrigues just failed to make contact with the rebound as it flashed across the goal.

Imortal managed a good spell after Chico had replaced Pelé half way through the half. Chico's passing and ball skills were evident, but still those in front of him could do nothing with it. Nerves were starting to jangle around the half hour. Tidjane Baldé swapped wings to try to get something going, then came the long stoppage for the Lagoa goalkeeper's injury. He did do a fairly impressive triple roll, derided by the home crowd but after a few minutes attention on the field he was taken off and an ambulance called. Lagoa had already done all their subs so were down to ten. Normal time was ending when Tidjane Baldé tested the stand-in keeper but his save was no more than routine.

Nine minutes additional time was announced, which became eleven. Two minutes into that a Lagoa player was sent off for two yellow cards and they  were down to nine. Imortal then resorted to hoofing the ball into the penalty area to see if something would happen, but there were at times 18 or 19 players crammed into a very small area, no space. T. Baldé then clattered the replacement ´keeper, so there was another stoppage.

Right on time, a poor clearance fell to Chico in space on the edge of the area. All around cried 'calma, Chico' so he blasted it first time about 10 metres over the bar!

End of the game, Imortal's goalkeeper Nélio Pereira (restored) confronted a couple of the Lagoa players about something we know not. He was perhaps bored having only touched the ball about three times that half. There was the usual arm waving, pushing and shoving as the players walked off with the match officials and three of Albufeira's finest looking on.

Imortal's next game is the difficult trip to league leaders Moncarapachense, next Saturday.

Imortal Albufeira 0 Ferreiras 0

Typical local derby, not much in the way of skill or excitement for a decent crowd of around 250. The best of very few goalscoring opportunities fell to Imortal a few minutes before the end of normal time. A good move down the right, initiated by what at first seemed a very dubious clearance by goalkeeper Pereira to right back Santos. Santos took the ball down the wing and crossed more in hope than expectation towards Pelé in the centre. The more famous Pelé would probably have scored, but his namesake couldn't quite get his head to the ball enough to send it goalwards. Instead it went over the bar.

The game was played mainly in midfield, defences cut out most attacks with the end product being only four shots on target during the whole game. Neither goalkeeper had a save of note to make. Both sides had half chances from long range, but these were either skied or were weak and stopped easily.

The only real moment in the first half came on the half hour. A cross floated in from the right beat Imortal's goalkeeper, seemed to drop onto the crossbar, but then luckily it fell among defenders who cleared safely.

The second half was a bit better to begin with. Imortal's attack was more positive and was nearly rewarded when a low cross by Ramos just eluded Tidjane Balé and Vieira as it sped along the six yard line.

The game opened out a little, but Ferreiras were content to defend in numbers and stage the occasional counter-attack. Midway through the half came a long stoppage for 'injury', the first of several that were to disrupt the game considerably from then on. Imortal's first corner of the half on 26 minutes lead to Pacheco blasting a shot miles over. Imortal had a minor shout for a penalty, nothing doing, then came Pelé's chance before the referee announced six minutes of added time.

This became ten minutes, as Ferreiras used every trick in the book to break up any flow to the game Imortal might have wanted to create. A good run by Tidjane Baldé almost came to something, but he ran out of pitch before he could cross and then Santos delayed and delayed a cross until he was robbed of possession. A first time ball would have been a better option.

Eventually, at three minutes past five, the game ended with the customary exchange of views between opposing players. This time it was Tidjane Baldé and two of the visitors pointing fingers.

The result means Imortal have now gone seven matches without a defeat in the League but it's three wins and four draws, so points dropped rather than gained I think.  That and the day's other results leave Imortal in sixth place with 13 points from nine games. Next week they travel to Almancil, who are eighth. A win would useful! League table in full https://www.zerozero.pt/edition.php?id_edicao=136814

Yesterday - Almancil 0 - 0 Imortal that's three 0-0 draws for Imortal in their last four league games, all of which have been drawn. Not being beaten is all very well, but a win would be nice!

I was unable to go as I was trying to play bowls in my team's defeat that day.

Next Saturday Imortal will be at home to bottom club Lusitano VRSA ko 1500hrs / 3pm

At last a win, 6-0, after four consecutive draws. But the opposition were bottom of the table having lost all their games. I wasn't able to go as getting to and from Vila Real de Santo António for a 3pom Sunday kickoff means leaving home at 0930am!

Next Sunday Imortal will be at home (I hope!) to the 11 Esperanças, ko 1500 hrs / 3pm.

IMORTAL 1 - 0 OS 11 ESPERANÇAS

Not the prettiest game I have ever seen, but the win extends Imortal's unbeaten run in the League to ten matches and it's four clean sheets in a row.

The only goal of the game came from the boot of Umaro Baldé, a superb free kick from all of 25 metres out which he sent low and hard around the defensive wall and into the bottom corner of the net. That was one of only two shots Imortal managed to get on target. The visitors defended set pieces with all eleven of their players inside the penalty area and most of the time there were eight or nine back in defence. Getting through was very difficult.

The visitors had the best of the early exchanges on a very dry and sometimes bumpy pitch. Imortal gradually worked their way into the game, with Elvis making some good runs down the right wing. One of these forced a corner, which Baldé then wasted with possibly the worst corner in football history, passing it back 20 metres to an opponent.

Still, he atoned for this mistake on 20 minutes. A free kick was won, Baldé settled over the ball and blasted it around the wall.

The rest of the half was pretty uneventful, except for one or two of the visitors over-reactions to being fouled. Imortal's full back Costa was clattered, he took a minute to get back on his feet and a few moments later clearly handled the ball to stop an attack.  He wasn't booked, somewhat surprisingly. This was right in front of the visitors bench. Angry words were spoken, to which the ref took exception and eventually one of the coaching staff saw red. He later turned up among the small but vociferous group of away fans, for whom the big sign 'no alcoholic drinks to be taken into the stadium' clearly had no meaning. Albufeira's finest were too busy watching the match to do anything about it.

The half ended with further words. Rodrigues kept his players back until the other lot had left the pitch. A wise move, considering the second half to come.

The visitors were very slow to come out for the second half and immediately settled into defensive mode. Imortal won another free kick early on, in a similar position to the scoring shot. Marcio Ramos took it but it flashed past the post. More chances were created, Vieira struck a shot straight at the ´keeper from five metres, a Ramos shot was finger-tipped onto a goalpost and away for a corner.  Baldé had another free kick chance, but put it just over the bar. Ramos was foiled at the last by a diving ´keeper's grab after a good run and cross by Tidjane Baldé.

The final few minutes grew very tetchy with a series of ankle tapping fouls and a lot of finger waving. Four minutes added time were signalled in which Ramos wasted a glorious opportunity. A mix up between goalkeeper and defender presented him with the ball about 25 metres out and the goal open. He rolled the ball goalwards but it went wide. Right at the end Mamadu Baldé was denied by an offside flag.

The three points move Imortal up to 5th place, seven points behind leaders Ferreiras. They don't play again until 4th January, when a trip to Silves awaits.

Silves 1 - 2 Imortal Albufeira

No pictures, too many shadows.

Games between these two have often been ill-tempered and this one was no exception. There were flashpoints towards the end of each half and lots of niggle throughout. By half time there had been more yellow and red cards seen than shots on goal. Imortal were frankly pretty poor a lot of the time, especially in front of goal where chances went a-missing. To be fair, Silves had theirs too, including two headers inexplicably put wide or over from inside the six yard box, to the loud groans of the home fans.

It was a nice sunny day, a little windy at times with a decent crowd of around 130 in the main stand and behind one goal. On the synthetic grass, Imortal were using the long ball to exploit the pace of Elvis and Tijane Baldé up front, but the former either lost the ball or crossed behind the goal, while Tidjane's only chance in the first fifteen minutes went straight at the ´keeper.

Silves were given a golden chance on the half hour when Anderson Freitas latched onto a free kick, but his header went over from 5 metres with Imortal's defence static.

Imortal's defender Calado was shown yellow after a clash in midfield, Tijane Baldé followed for his part in a minor scuffle. The game was fast and becoming increasingly furious.

Two minutes before the interval, in front of the Silves bench, another clash resulted in a red card for Silves defender George Souza for a retaliatory kick out at Imortal´s Chico. A bit silly, since it wasn't Chico who fouled him in the first place. There ensued a long argument between several Silves players and the referee before Oliveira finally trudged off.

Play resumed, Tijane Baldé was barged over. Free kick Imortal, which drew some comment from the bench and a red card for one of Silves coaching staff. (He was subsequently fined €45 and suspended for 38 days by the Algarve FA.)

I don't know what was said at half time but most of the second half was almost all peace and light. In contrast to the first half, when there had been six free kicks in the first minutes, the ref didn't have to blow his whistle at all until the twelfth.

An early chance cames Silves' way, but this time it was Fua (ex Imortal) who headed onto the crossbar with Nélio well beaten.

Imortal's ever hard working Mateo Vieira had a shot smothered, Imortal were well fairly well in control until the ten men broke swiftly out of defence. A hoof upfield was picked up by Bruno Boiças on half way, his speed took him past defenders to the edge of the area. Goalie Nélio Pereira came out to meet him but was expertly lobbed. 1-0 Silves and loud cheers from the stand. There was much finger pointing among Imortal´s defenders.

Management responded by replacing midfielder Chico with striker Bruno Pereira. He hadn't really made an impact this season, but reward would come in the form of the winner.

Silves went into ultra defensive mode to try to preserve their lead. Out came all the tricks to break up the game, feigning injury, taking forever over throws etc.

As Imortal pushed for the equaliser things started to get nasty again. Tidjane Baldé got himself involved in wrestling match and was booked.  Imortal finally struck back on thirty-five minutes with a simple goal. A hopeful cross took a deflection and Mamadu Baldé just stuck his head in the way to divert it in at the near post.

Five minutes later a corner was headed in at the near post by Bruno Pereira, completely unmarked, a nice calm finish. 2-1 Imortal. Silves responded and bought a free kick when Viera's arm was run into. That was floated over, but again another header was missed, this time by Bruno Nova. At least his was a bit more difficult than the other two.

Six minutes added time was displayed. Not enough, cried the home fans. Two minutes of that had been played when they had a good claim for a penalty, nothing doing. That provoked angry scenes among the crowd, requiring two of Silves' finest to move and glare menacingly at the offenders. One in particular had been pacing up and down the the front of the stand in time with the assistant referee, beer in one hand, while giving him the benefit of his wisdom concerning the non award of penalties and lack of sendings off.

The game ended fairly quietly after all that.

That result and others mean that Imortal are now in 4th place with 23 points from 13 games in this first phase of 22 games. Unbeaten now for 11 games, but too many draws leaves a six point gap to make up to reach the top.

Unfortunately thanks to the changes earlier in the season, Imortal now begin a run of five consecutive away games. The first of these is away to second place team Louletano B next Saturday.

Quarteira SC 0 - 0 Imortal Albufeira

Imortal extended their unbeaten run in the league to 13 games, but seven of those have been drawn. This was largely a poor game on a  bumpy pitch speckled with small sand pits.

Imortal didn't manage a single shot in the second half. In the first half the hosts managed only two. It was that sort of game.

Imortal did almost score after 17 minutes, but Quarteira's goalkeeper Nuno Gonçalves  intervened to dive onto the ball on the goal-line, moments before Marcio Ramns could stick out a toe to force it over. Ramos then had a weak shot easily saved, Elvis Udokporo saw a header palmed away. All that in the first twenty minutes ,which was the total of Imortal's goal attempts!

Some poor play by Imortal all round saw the ball continually given away and people straying offside. The pitch didn't help. Quarteira are next to bottom with only 15 goals scored in 15 games and it showed.  They had one half decent chance, but Imortal's otherwise unemployed goalkeeper was able to watch one go wide after the defence had been fairly easily sliced open. There was a chance for Ramos to score a few minutes before half time, but he was denied by an offside flag.

Curious first half statistic. Imortal conceced only one free kick. They had the ball for so long there was no need to make a tackle. A different story in the second period!

Imortal were nearly caught out early in the second half when a long high clearance out of defence was missed by Tiago Nunes, last man about defending about midway into the half. Luckily he recovered enough to get back and made a good saving tackle. Ramos had a half chance denied by the home goalkeeper Gonçalves.  He dived onto a good low cross from Odukporo from the right wing just before Ramos could reach it. Gonçalves did like going to ground. Poses for the camera.

Pereira, in the Imortal goal,  reacted well after  a crazy deflection off the heel of Umaro Baldé threatened to loop over him into the net, but that was probably the best effort Quarteira managed. Imortal sat back a bit to defend the draw, a succession of free kicks were conceded, often prompted by an hysterical reaction to a slight ankle tap. But Quarteira failed to make anything of them. Tidjane Baldé did get into the opposition penalty area, one on one with the ´keeper as a cross came in, but couldn't make up his mind whether to head it or kick it. In the end he did neither, missing the cross completely.

The game petered out with the referee adding only 3 minutes, much to the ire of the Imortal cameraman behind us. He suggested to the referee that ten minutes should have been granted, because of continual time wasting and the lack of ball boys to bring the ball back from the far reaches of the stadium. But since Imortal had not mustered a shot on at goal in the previous 45, I suspect the referee was as fed up as everyone else.

The moments immediately after the final whistle generated more excitement that in most of the game. Tidjane Baldé was exchanging views with several opponents, requiring Quarteira's finest to earn their pay and separate the warring factions.

Imortal are now 5th in the league, ten points behind unbeaten leaders Moncarapachense. Imortal's next game in this run of six away matches is at Guia, next Saturday and all being well at 3pm.

Match statistics

Free kicks conceced : Imortal 14 (just the one in the first half); Quarteira 15
Offside : Imortal 7 (all in the first half); Quarteira 3
Shots on target : Imortal 2; Quarteira 1 all of which I could have saved.
Shots off target : Imortal 2, Quarteira 4
Shots blocked : Imortal 0; Quareira3

Another shot-shy performance from Imortal and yet another drawn game.

Guia 1 - 1 Imortal Albufeira~

It's now fourteen games undefeated for Imortal in the League, but we have won only six of them! Imortal have scored only 21 goals in 16 league games. Nine of them were in two matches. On the plus side only 11 goals have been conceded, the second fewest in the league. But drawing every week does not win things. As a result, Imortal remain fifth in the league. The priority now must be to finish in the top six and not have to worry about the relegation battle in the second phase.

Heavy rain greeted the kickoff and it would last until half time. A good crowd had to find shelter under the small roof of the main stand, the majority of the seating being uncovered.

Pitch was wet and slippery, control was difficult.

Goalmouth incidents and scoring chances were few and fara between. It was Guia who took an early lead. Ten minutes in, a free kick was struck against the crossbar, the rebound fell to Guia's midfielder Goncalo Fernandes who, from about 15 metres, smashed it in low and hard into the far corner.

Ramos nearly levelled things for Imortal on the half hour but his good effort was well saved by Cabrita, at the foot of the post. A similar save soon afterwards by Nélio Pereira at the other end denied Guia.

It was Ramos who scored Imortal's equaliser in first half added time. A good near post header from a corner was powerful enough to slip through the goalkeeper's hands añd into the net.

A half time change for Imortal saw Jõao Assis replace Chico in midfield. He, Ramos and Vieira worked hard and gradually Imortal improved. The problems were in front of them.

But still the final ball was often poor and when a shooting chance came, high and wide was the order.

A good chance was almost seized upon by Elvis Udokporu but he was thwarted at the last by good goalkeeping.

Guia were reduced to ten men after almost half an hour of the second half. The goalscorer Fernandes was sent off after an apparent smack in the face administered to Assis. Later in the week the Algarve FA dished out a two match suspension for his troubles.

Imortal struggled to make anything concrete from the almost total dominance that followed. For reasons unknown, Mamadu Baldé declined to use his long throw, which surely would have been effective on Guia's small pitch.

Five added minutes were shown. Imortal threw everything into attack, but failed to break down a stubborn defence. Guia's fans and players were suitably pleased at the end.

Imortal's next game is once again an away game, in the bleakness of the Horta da Areia ground in Faro against Culatrense, who are always hard to beat.
