Yesterday Imortal 1 - 1 Moncarapachense so the title is now out of reach.

I hope they got our goal on video. It was an absolute rocket from 30 yards by captain and centre back Pedro Rodrigues, very reminiscent of that hit by Vincent Kompany last week.

More tomorrow.

Imortal 1 - 1 Moncarapachense

The win that Imortal needed to stay in the title race was not to be. Moncarapachense's game plan worked to restrict Imortal to just six goalscoring chances all afternoon. Paollo Oliveira was double marked and barely got a look-in, although he did hit a goalpost with a first time effort after a poor clearance and one time shot from distance when he should have passed.

Imortal's goal was very like that scored by Vincent Kompany last week, a screamer on the hour by captain and centre back Pedro Rodrigues hit from 35 yards that hit the top corner of the goal. But the vital lead lasted only a few minutes. Imortal's defence was not concentrating at a free kick, which was delivered onto the near post by Camacho and nodded past a helpless 'keeper by Diogo Romeiro.

So far as Moncarapachense are concerned, they host leaders Lagos  in the final game of the season next Saturday. Lagos are two points ahead, a draw will do for them while Moncarapachense must win.

Imortal will finish second if they beat the 11 Esperanças next week and Moncarapachense lose or draw. Only the league winners get promotion.

There was a good crowd in, difficult to estimate but certainly several hundred. Plenty of noise too  and the stadium is looking very nice now that the refurbishment of the main stand is complete.

The visitors were content to sit back and let Imortal do the work for most of  the time on a hot sunny afternoon. They did manage a shot from a free lick kick after seventeen minutes, but that sailed way over the bar. The referee was one of those who feels that football is a non-contact sport. Imortal conceded five free kicks in the first ten minutes and over the match there was a total of 39 free kicks for 'fouls'.

Few chances to score came anyone's way with defences on top. Twenty minutes in Imortal centre-back Calado headed a corner powerfully but straight at the 'keeper. Time and again Imortal's wing-backs were getting into good positions, but the final ball was almost always poor. A breakout by Moncarpachense won them a corner which Pereira clutched out of the air, no doubt pleased to be in the action.

Paollo Oliveira, normally Imortal's main threat, was closely marked by two defenders and became increasingly frustrated, going down perhaps too easily at times.  Had he stayed on his feet a little longer, he may have been better off. Still, later in the game when he did so, he was penalised every time he won the ball back. He did manage to escape his markers on the edge of the penalty area to hammer a poor clearance against a goalpost. The ball bounced right across the goal and eventually off for a throw.

Half time and no score, hardly surprising when the sum total of shots was five, the wayward free kick being the visitors only effort.

Imortal knew they had to make more of the possession. After a slow start to the second half, a good through ball gave Oliveira a half chance but the goalkeeper reacted well and came out to smother the ball before he had full control.

Fifteen minutes into the second half and Imortal went ahead, a goal well worthy of a higher stage. A goal out of nothing. Rodrigues picked up a crossfield pass just inside the half, took a  few steps and let fly from all of 35 yards. The accurate shot hit the top corner giving the 'keeper no chance.

Here's the goal on video courtesy of Imortal's Facebook page - https://pt-pt.facebook.com/imortalfans/videos/2328309367407035/

The lead lasted only a few minutes, Moncarapachense equalising on 21 minutes from a free kick with Imortal's defence not paying attention.

Moncarapachense didn't so much as park the bus after that but deploy a whole fleet of them. Imortal tried but couldn't break through. The crowd was getting quiet, with only occasional insults to be hurled at the officials and visiting players, who were slowing down the game at every opportunity. Oliveira's frustrations grew and eventually he was booked for offering the referee his opinion about matters.

Five minutes additional time was shown. Imortal won a free kick in a good position right at the end, everyone was up. The ball fell to Oliveira, his shot was blocked and his attempt to get the ball back penalised.

At first it was rather quiet around the ground at the final whistle but athen there was generous applause for Imortal's efforts over the season. A couple of poor results against lower teams was the difference.

The 'reward' for finishing second or third is a place in next season's Portugal FA Cup, the first games of which are usually played a couple of weeks before the Algarve League season starts ie the second weekend of September.

Imortal's last game is away at the 11 Esperanças next Saturday.

IMORTAL 0 - 1 SILVES

A poor game for a good crowd of around 300, swelled from the usual by the parents of the various junior age group teams who were presented at half time.

The teams managed only three shots on target between them. The one that made the difference came in the 82nd minute when hesitancy among the Imortal defence allowed Silves sub Fua (who played for Imortal some while back) to stab a loose ball into the goal from a couple of metres out.  And that after Silves were reduced to ten men on 37 minutes with the dismissal of defender Jackson for a second yellow card, rightly earned for two very poor challenges.

Two significant changes among the Imortal squad are the departure of striker Oliveira to Farense and the apparent retirement of goalkeeper Nélio Pereira. His replacement, simply known as David, wears the same number 99 shirt.

The first half hour had literally nothing to write about. It was very scrappy, little shape to either team and both goalkeepers unemployed. Imortal's David had to make a smart save low down just after the half -hour, then came the sending off. Imortal did improve a little and after a sixth corner just before half time Calado headed just wide and it stayed scoreless.

Imortal began the second half faced with a massed Silves defence. The first of eleven Imortal corners was forced in the seventh minute when a shot by Chico was blocked. Again, it was Calado with the header but again just wide.

The game reverted to type, the ten men of Silves content to defend in depth with Imortal's forwards unable to find a way through.  Nothing came of the many corners.

Silves broke out and a good long throw caused trouble in the Imortal goal area, keeper and defenders seemed to leave it to each other  giving Fua with the simple task of tapping it over the line.

Imortal tried to respond, Tidjeane Baldé was almost on the end of a far post cross that would have provided a late equaliser. A late shout for a penalty was waved away by the referee and Chico earned himself a booking for arguing about it.

Lack of firepower up front needs to be solved.

Next week Imortal will be at home again. The match against Louletano B is reversed from the original fixtures and will be at the Albufeira stadium 12th October ko 1500hrs / 3pm.

Imortal 2 - 1 Louletano B

Two penalties in the final twenty minutes of the game, both nicely converted by Umaro Baldé, gave Imortal their first points of the season. Overall the game was not particularly good, with some dreadful defending at times by Imortal and the fact that the two penalties were their only shots on target! The lack of a decent striker is an obvious problem.

The day was warm and dry, it was a bit windy at pitch level, parts of which looked a bit rough after some maintenance work.

Both sides started quickly, with half chances at either end. The visitors fielded a trio of fast and fairly useful strikers who were to cause problems all afternoon.

The first decent chance went the way of Imortal, Pelé turned well on the edge of  the area but his shot was deflected for a corner. A little bit of pressure followed, with four corners in about two minutes but nothing came of them. The fourth corner, pictured below, was just too high and fast for the attackers - Imortal were playing in their white shirts.

Louletano went ahead after 18 minutes. A woeful attempt at a back-header by Mamadu Baldé fell nicely for an opponent standing behind him. He made no mistake with a fierce shot from ten metres out.

Imortal created several more half chances, Rodrigues headed just wide in the best of them. Meanwhile defenders were working hard, in particular Tidjane Baldé who was twice left on the grass after thunderous midfield 50/50 challenges. Striker Bruno Pereira also went down hard in his own area while assisting in defence. I made a note that two foul throws were given in the first half, one against each team. That's two more than I think I saw in all the games I have watched over the past year or so! Most unusual.

The second half began with another mistake in the home defence but luckily 'keeper David was on hand to make a great blocking save, Rodrigues hacked the rebound to safety.

Imortal applied the pressure, the play was all down at the visitors end but their defence was solid. Various appeals for penalties were turned down, one by Tidjane looked to be a poor decision by the referee, who was increasingly annoying both teams with his decisions or lack of them. Tidjane was booked.

Midway through the half Imortal brought on Cascalvo, who made an almost immediate impact. Known for his dead ball skills, a free kick from 25 metres was blocked by an arm in the defensive wall. Penalty, no doubt, and little protest for once.

Umaro Baldé strikes the blow, while Elvis (number 15) is obviously confident he won't have to try for a rebound!

It all then started to get a bit agitated. Having already been booked, Tidjane was incensed to receive a second yellow for apparently not retreating at a free kick. Happy he was not and had to be almost dragged from the pitch.

Louletano's defence was still being stretched by the ten men when, seven minutes before the end of normal time, some very smart work down the left by Mamadu Baldé put Cascalvo in with a run on goal. He was hacked down, obvious penalty and a yellow  card for the defender. After the customary minute of argument, up stepped Umaro Baldé once more to plant a good penalty into the corner. ´Keeper went the right way but couldn't get down fast enough.

Imortal then had to to defend stoutly, the big boot up the field was the order of the day. Five minutes added time was shown, which became seven as things started to get a bit tetchy. Various confrontations interrupted play, one took place in front of the visitors bench which ended up with their coach being sent off and much pointing of fingers between various players. Cascalvo and Imortal's ´keeper David in particular looked they were ready to whack someone.

The final whistle blew, much to the relief of the 100 or so fans.  Imortal go up to 8th of 12 teams.

Imortal's next game is also at home, Saturday 19th October and the visitors will be Quarteira SC.

Yesteday : Imortal 1 - 1 Guia but no report again as my lack of sporting prowess was required on the bowling green far away. We lost.

In yet another change of fixture Imortal will be at home again next Saturday, for the fifth week in a row! They will entertain Culatrense ko 1500hrs / 3pm.

This weird situation will mean six away matches in a row during January and early February.
