€1.12 to the £ for cash in town today.

On a related point, I have today received a letter from my UK bank telling me that they have abolished the £1.50 flat fee for using my £ debit card in a € machine (assuming here Multibanco not those other crooks) so if other banks are doing the same that will ease the pain a tiny bit.  Also includes Iceland and Norway, not that I have any plans to go to either.

Also applies to purchases made in shops and restaurants etc.

gone down quite a bit after a wee spike ... now just under 1.15 actual rate ... Ramsdens in uk are giving 1.14 ... might just as well go to Tesco for smaller amounts .. 1.133

Hate to say it ... but if the forecast is for heavy spread of Covid-19 in uk (little evidence that Governments are doing anything to stop it) ..  pound probably will take a sharp fall on the lower economic forecasts ...  I`m buying some more euros now.

Usual Monday stuff, plus Covid-19, takes pound under 1.10 today ... Ramsdens just over 1.08 ... Tesco at 1.065 .... should be lucky to get 1.00 in Algarve ...  may go back up a bit midweek
after Deutch Bank, etc, take their profits ..

Interesting why COVID-19 should affect the Pound against the Euro?

UK has a trading deficit (Scotland doesn`t) and relies on foreign investment to boost the currency. Such investors are currently withdrawing and so sterling will be under pressure from much larger currencies/markets (Euro and Dollar). Covid-19 ... supposedly at the beginning of a huge smack in the face .. increases investor worries .. impression also UK and Scottish governments have not done enough, nor quickly enough, against the virus threat ..

No-one's going to need Euros for a while now as the EU has closed its external border. As UK is no longer in the EU, that presumably means no-one leaves.

There will though be an effect for those who receive UK pensions here.

Worse to come I fear ... expected rally didn`t happen ... officially now 1.084 ... Ramsdens very generous at 1.0695 ... Tesco, Asda, etc just under 1.06 ... fall of 1.50% just in 1 day ..
