Thanks for that Andrew. I thought the damaging high tides were over the Winter and things were being rectified, not that they had happened so recently.
If they want to reinstate the lagoon and it's nature reserve then perhaps it's time for a more substantial barrier. |

This has happened before, one time when the golf course people actually drained the lagoon 'by accident' but nature soon put things back to rights. Tides have been very high and the stormy weather has not helped. A few weeks of normal weather should restore the barrier at Salgados. There is or was a kind of valve pipe fitted at the barrier to ensure a flow of water. Has it been damaged or blocked I wonder?

I doubt they have a dredger just hanging around for use at a moments notice so they have to hire one. There aren't many about so it's not like you can just phone up and have it on site the next day. The amount of sand required is enormous, far too much to be trucked in and in all honesty a JCB might be able to patch up a few small areas but that's about it. They plan to do a bit here in Norfolk. It's an area about 5km long in front of the UK's biggest gas terminal. They estimate that it will cost between £17m and £19m, it will take at least 6 months to complete and that the amount of sand required is approx the size of 200 football pitches covered 1 metre deep. The process being used is called a Sand Engine. After the sand is dredged and deposited on the beach it has to be positioned so that the normal flow of water disperses it to where it is needed. https://www.dutchwatersector.com/news-events/news/27270-royal-haskoningdhv-designs-second-sand-engine-to-halt-erosion-norfolk.html |

I hate how peopleï compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

Of course what you have to bear in mind is that in other countries they build football stadia in 18 months for £250m, in the UK the same thing takes 8 years and costs £750m +... Andrew's pictures tell their own story.

Falesia yesterday - quite busy for mid May. At a rough guess it looks as though around half the sand they spent 4 months pumped on there a year ago has gone. High tide had been right up the the back of the beach the further along you went. |
