Seemingly announced only on Facebook and thanks to Sid's Mum for passing it on. Translated from the original

GIRO - ALBUFEIRA URBAN TRANSPORT NETWORK NEW TICKET SYSTEM - REQUIRE THE ISSUANCE OF NEW TITLES BY 👉 AUGUST 26 ✅Albufeira City Council informs all users of the urban transport network - Giro, that from the 1st of September a new ticketing system will come into force, maintaining, until the end of November 2022, the tariffs and current lines, and from that date (1 September 2022), the titles currently in force can no longer be validated. ✅ Due to this fact, all GIRO users must go to the ticket offices of the Central Bus Station, until August 26th, to request the issuance of new tickets, using the current ones until August 31 of this year . ✅ Taking into account the expected influx of users, the municipality draws attention to the fact that, if they do not request the issuance of new tickets by August 26, the urban transport network operator does not guarantee that they will be available. on the 1st of September.

That also portends changes to the routes and a fare increase in December.

Just been to the bus station...
If you have a bus pass with your photo on it(students/seniors?), you need to complete a form, hand it in, and return next week to exchange for the new bus pass.

If like me, you have a basic bus pass with no photo, you can do a straight exchange but not until next week!!!

I confirm that it is the case. I had to queue for 10 minutes to get the form earier today, there being of course only one ticket window open for everything. Far too difficult to make it available on line, unlike Lagos who are also changing their system. I filled it in, then queued for another 20 minutes to hand it back and have it checked.

If you have the seniors or another pass with a photo, take it with you. The form asks for a citizen card number. I don't have one but the residencia number will do. The lady was quite happy with that, but I must take it next week to show when I collect my new pass.

The 10 and 20 ride cards (no photo) will be changed before 1st September but "not yet".

Collected my new pass today. What they conveniently forgot to tell everyone is that you must pay €5 for the new version! That caught out a good many in front of me in the queue.

I had to wait 40 minutes in the queue, first day of issue and of course everyone else trying to do the same thing. Take the old one with you, helps things along.

When used on the bus, a printed ticket is no longer issued. Your picture is no longer on the card.

They did not have any of the 10 and 20 journey pre paid cards. No problem for me, but could have been for others.

Now we can look forward to 1st December and a likely fares increase but maybe, just maybe, GIRO buses out to Olhos D'Agua, Açoteais, Galé and Guia.

This morning I took my basic bus pass (the one I top up with 10 or 20 rides) to the bus station, for the exchange.

Seamless, except I too was surprised that I had to pay €3 for the privilege!!
I paid €3 for the old version - THEY change the ticketing system and WE have to pay again!

Is a single ticket still €0.40 for one hour?

1,40 cash on board yes. Prices are apparently being held until the end of November, which is fair enough as they haven't gone up for quite a few years.

They will have made a few thousand by forcing people to pay for their new passes, but as we know the cost of everything is going up very rapidly. I cannot see fares staying the same.

I have also read that Albufeira council has been given an EU grant to buy 10 electric buses.

Is The new card a swipe card or contactless card or is it just a show and go card?
Seems a retrograde step if it doesn't have a photo, we'll all be asking to borrow yours TomBig smile

€1.40 is a good price to me. Don't know what the locals think. I know it can be even cheaper by using cards but I've always been too lazy to get one.

Well if you get one, it's only 80 cents pre paid but you have to pay €3 for the card itself.

€1,40 even so is a good price for my 5km (3 mile) journey across town to chuck some bowls around. In UK where I used to live that would cost about £2,50 so around twice as much.

Being an old *** I have a monthly seniors pass at €11. Not free like in the UK, but over 65´s can get a special pass for free travel on Saturdays if wanted.

The current downside is that passes can only be recharged at the bus station ticket office, which is a bit of a pain it requires some travel planning for the majority whose journeys don't tke them anywhere near it. If the new system eventually allows that to be done online as with the VAMUS buses, so much the better.

Fingers crossed re the system being available online....
Now that you don't get a ticket, I'll have to keep track of how many of my 20 tickets I have used (it used to be printed on the ticket)
I asked a driver this question and he is able to view this info on his new fancy touchscreen, but it took quite a few "taps" on his screen to get to the relevant info - so I delayed the bus!!

Also Tom, now there's no ticket to show, how do I transfer between buses within the hour at no extra cost? Is there a particular phrase I should use, so they can check my pass without charging it again?!!

Good question. I assume the system will know what time you got on and won't double charge. Be worth checking next time. I am using my senior pass until the 23rd, so I always have to tap in anyway.

Good point about keeping track of journeys. Something else to work on!

Maybe the new system will fall into line with VAMUS on which you can deal with tickets on line. We shall see.
