"Expert" gives the impression the person Knows All. Of course no one does. I prefer "Specialist".

I totally understand Portugal protecting itself from the British mutant strain , but only banning Uk flights and disregarding Brazil or South African seems nonsensical !

Some years ago Victor Borge told the tale of the scientist who discovered a cure for which there was no disease. Sadly he later caught the cure and died.

Nothing any government over the last ten months or so has done has prevented the spread, death rates are increasing etc etc. Is there a case for letting it out and deliberately allowing the population to be exposed? That's what used to happen when as children we were deliberately exposed to measles, chickenpox and the rest in the belief that these can be fought better when younger and fitter.
Once everyone has had it, it will have nowhere to go. Otherwise the possible remedy is to forbid the population from leaving home for any reason. That is unacceptable for politicians wishing to avoid the blame for the resulting chaos.

I had a look at Wikipedia which tells me; "In the United States, chickenpox parties were popular before the introduction of the varicella vaccine in 1995. Children were also sometimes intentionally exposed to other common childhood illnesses, such as mumps and measles. Before vaccines became available, parents regarded these diseases as almost inevitable." Just proves there's no such thing as a new idea.

I think there are three considerations with just letting the population be exposed...
- one is that it would overwhelm most medical systems. Even if mortality rate is low, 'sickness' alone overrun the hospitals. - unlike chickenpox which leaves you with lifelong (or close) immunity, covid antibodies disappear. - and we're beginning to hear of more about long term effects. :( One article discussed the implications of having an entirely new source of disabilities. People who are left unable to walk more than short distances or go up a flight of stairs without being out of breath or dangerously high heart rates, people with brain fogs that are at risk of forgetting stoves on, etc. If you can't walk a block, you probably can't work... if you can't be trusted to cook at home, you can't live alone... what will happen to these people? Can any country take on the responsibility (financial and otherwise) to care for thousands and thousands of these people? But expecting people to remain in permanent lock down is not an answer either. Regardless of safety, who wants to or can live like that? Vaccines and stringent immediate testing is the only way we can all move forward. More vaccines will be developed and the production snags will be worked out. And, as for testing... the tests will become even more reliable, quicker and cheaper. Testing before boarding planes, before entering countries, before entering large groups (ie disney world parks) will minimize spread (even after vaccines). I'm sure this will all come to pass... it'll just take time, unfortunately. (Hope I'm not taking the conversation too seriously... just chatting along)

I'm in touch occasionally with someone from St John's NL. They seem to have it mostly under control. Probably not much high density housing which will help.

Yes, our eastern provinces have fared quite well. But, even with lower populations, they seem to have responded quicker and more strictly than other provinces.
From very early on, they closed their borders to other Canadians. Not sure exactly how rigid their border rules were but they were clear they didn't want Canadians from other provinces to go visit now (unfortunately, that had been the tentative plan for me and friends! ).

I've been told to expect my first jab by mid February. About 3-4 week. I'm in the 70-79 group. Don't know about elsewhere but communication from the Scottish Govt. is good. Let's hope it's accurate. The EU may throw a spanner in the works. It seems the EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides is not happy with the distribution of vaccine. According to BBC news
she has said "companies making Covid vaccines in the bloc will have to "provide
early notification whenever they want to export vaccines to third
countries"". Forunately the AstraZeneca vaccine is mainly produced in the UK and is easier to transport and store.

My wife and I are both over 70 and no sign of the jab as of today, but my neighbour over the road aged 69 is having hers tomorrow and she is a fit as a fiddle, so there is no sense in the criteria as who gets it next. I think its just a depending which doctors practice you are with, as we are different one to hers. And to be honest I would rather the used the spare jabs on anyone who is available than throw them away.

In wales it’s very slow and badly managed , all scrambling about to try and not look like they are on a go slow, but around me I know of many who have been vaccinated and should not really have been prioritised
An example is my dentist neighbours practise, all vaccinated and that included the 22 year old cleaner ! All clerical background office admin too I’m super pleased UK rolling it out fast, but this quarantine in hotels is ridiculous and will kill off the tourism industry, short term, but not long term ! |

The figures in Portugal seem so high, in light of the current lockdown restrictions , is it due to the density of population in the main cities ? Or still the after affects of Christmas .
It seems unusual that they are not dropping 🤔 Any local observations ? Thanks |
