Midnight on the 5th as I read yesterday. The previous weekend confinements are also expected to be removed, as are many of the restrictions that have been in force this last three months. But with figures showing that currently show as much as 0.12% of the population is affected by the contagion, there is always the chance of restrictions being re-imposed.

Recent increases have been linked to younger children being at back at school for a couple of weeks and also among building workers. The number of cases is still less than 0.2% of the population. In other words. 99.8% of the people don't have it. There were no visitors here over Easter. Even internal travel was banned for the whole of the week before. Nevertheless, the obedience to statistics does possibly mean that Albufeira will go back to everything being closed, as it is one of the places where even such a tiny number is deemed to be dangerously high. Other areas in the Algarve with similar issues are Lagoa (which includes Carvoeiro and Ferragudo) and Vila do Bispo. Portimão is currently at a higher 'risk' level. Portimão incudes the popular tourist destinations of Alvor and Praia da Rocha. The next government announcement about life restrictions is due on Friday 16th.

The problem for travellers is that while Portugal is well within the EU limit ... Algarve is now above that ... 280 cases in the last 7 days means 62.3 cases per 100k. Dont think any airlines, holiday companies or hotels will be advertising that ..

The latest piece of 'instruction' from government to those places that are now open includes "...the bathrooms should be accessible without the need to touch doors”.
Oh really? And even better, "Beyond this, it is obligatory to use a mask when accessing or remaining on a terrace, except during moments of consumption." So taken literally does this mean masks must only be removed for a few seconds that it takes to lift fork to mouth or to take a mouthful of beer, after which it must be immediately replaced? I give up. They do not state anywhere that staff should not be bringing plates, bottles and glasses to your table in their bare hands, which is surely much more of a health risk than either of the others. These rules are apparently being enforced by rigorous police patrols.

During the brief period last summer when beer garden drinking was allowed here I made a small hole in a paper mask and put a straw through it. Not the best way to drink beer & no use for food unless pureed.

That seems ridiculous, if no one is near your table and you’re in fresh air , then there is no scientific proof you could catch the virus ! So the idea that a mask is up and down like a yo yo is nonsense and not following data !
In Spain the plans to wear masks on the beach and in a pool is equally stupid !! If the Portugal gov wants tourism to return then restrictions that make no sense at all is not the way to proceed ! |

IMO The sun destination countries, Portugal included, should not want tourism to return until it's safe and it's not safe yet.
If they do encourage tourism, it's economics taking over from public health and they wouldn't be the first nor the last to do that.

If the countries are happy to accept people who are vaccinated, tested or have anti bodies I’m not sure I see the problem, if there is no opening the economies will struggle and in turn so will the people left unemployed and destitute .
Everyone will need to move forward and away from this limbo , but those that are concerned can simply isolate and avoid places where the general public or tourists gather . |

Once the majority of the eligible population gets vaccinated all these restrictions have to go,we cannot leave in constant fear forever after all the purpose of vaccination is to protect the health service so once that is achieved restrictions should end otherwise people will question what was the purpose of vaccination.

All the time the tabloids are screaming out that the plague is with us the picture is obscured. The numbers just don't add up, but it seems that the Algarve is considered to be at risk and may not be permitted to join the second stage of deconfinement from next Monday.
And for those who haven't seen this one, another example of the hand of officialdom cracking down hard on those who break the rules - https://www.portugalresident.com/portuguese-woman-fined-e200-for-eating-soup-in-her-own-car/

It will take another 3/4 months for the bulk of Europe to be vaccinated, including I assume Portugal, I think we just need to be patient a little longer.
In terms of the economic impact of continued restrictions Governments will just have to step up to the mark and provide whatever supports are necessary for both businesses and people for the next 3/4 months until restrictions can be lifted without fear of having to backtrack into lockdown yet again. |
