Work is well under way. One of the most obvious signs is the worksite by the escalators. Six months project due to end late June.

This poster explains all. I will try to get a better copy at the weekend.

The red line marks the course of the new drain to take the river from outside the health centre, through the hill more or less under Oceanville, across the main road near the traffic lights at the top end of Avenida do Ténis, then under the rest of Avenida do Ténis and coming out near the marina below the old cemetery.

The yellow line is the existing river tunnel under the old town. This will be intercepted near the square and channelled into the new capture by the escalators that's under construction behind the fences. Various thin lines show existing and new drains to join up with it.

Looks like they mean business. It's going to be expensive. Has there been money from central government?

Yes I read of a substantial cash input from central government after the floods a couple of years ago and those very destructive events in 2015.

The whole project is costing around €4 million and will take another two years to complete.

Better ones of the plans, very large originals, click thumbnails below to view. Phase 2 shows works along 'Bar Street' and that side of the square, in yellow. That is the lowest area of the town and most prone to flooding.

Looks like they are now putting the 'lid' onto the huge chamber excavated by the pier.

The earler stages of construction revealed some of the old layers dating back perhaps to the time when this was the river.

That lot above is still not quite finished!

A long trench has appeared in 'Bar Street'.

Bar Street dug up again!?!?
I bet the retailers down there are well chuffed even if we aren’t into tourist season yet.

Granfinus is open as they have doors on the other side, but as you say the others are all inaccessible. Better than being flooded I suppose.

The green ducts are for the fibre-optic telecoms cables now being laid all over town.

The work in 'Bar Street' is ongoing, no doubt the council are taking advantage of there being no tourists and everywhere closed.

Hopefully bar street will no longer stink of urine anymore .... it’s beyond me how anyone can sit outside any of the bars, and eat food and sup there, when it smells like public urinals, have to hold my breath when I walk through 🤷‍♂️😜

I don't often walk home this way so a chance to get a high level view of the work along Rua 5 de Outubro.
