We are just west of Albufeira, enjoying the sweltering heat and ten mins ago, the skies darkened, the sun got blocked out, the air was full of the smell of burning and ash is falling on us. It's a massive, like several miles wide, band of smoke, I fear for what has burned or is burning to create this.
I'll see if I can get some pics up.

It absolutley stinks, like a mixture of bonfire night and sewage! The ash continues to fall down on us as well but the smoke is just about clearing us now and is moving in the general direction of Albufeira but maybe a mile or so in land.
A couple more pics:-

Reached us at Loule. When I went to makro 90 mins ago you could see the smoke rising from the Monchique hills

The fires at Monchique have re erupted with devastating results. I have just come back from Lagoa to deliver drinks for the Bombeiros and it is very thick there and as look to the hills you can see vast smoke clouds.
The Bombeiros are appealing for water & energy drinks for the crews - if you can drop into Lagoa Bombeiros which is opposite Fatacil

Jeezzz, that fits.
Here it is now worse than at any time, it is thickening, spreading and getting lower, the air quality is uncomfortable, I believe it's what you'd call acrid, very unpleasent, and this is how many miles away and just the smoke, imagine the fire, or better still, don't!

Not as bad in Albufeira but we are getting the smoke and some ash. I have retreated into the air conditioned comfort of the apartment as I suffer from Asthma and don't want to tempt fate with poor air quality.

So, circa 4km west of Albufeira we are under a blanket smoke cloud, in every direction including out to sea, in fact in the valley behind us it's down there as well, lower than us.
It is quite unpleasent, really hurting the back of the throat.
I appreciate this is little or nothing to complain about compared to the folks who are in the thick of it, I just mention it for info, along the lines of how far away we are and it's having this effect it must be a hell of a fire, my thoughts and prayers are with those who are affected or in the thick of it, and if this is another one that's been started deliberately.... my blood boils!

I hate how peopleï compare Frank Zappa to God. I mean, he's cool and great and nice and everything, but he's no Zappa.

Thank goodness the fire appears to be out - fingers crossed it doesn't restart.

Our heartfelt thanks are due to the Bombeiros who have battled night & day to save lives & property

The orange seller on the main road round the corner from us, on a dry grass pitch, has just lit an open flame bbq on two bricks so 3 inches off the ground, to cook his lunch on, absolute madness, just beyond belief!!!!!!
