Does anyone know about the Airstrip that runs from Worms roundabout to Lusiadas Hospital?
I saw picture from possibly 1980's showing it having been levelled.
Was it ever intended to be airport? Doesn't seem anywhere big enough
As it slopes towards sea not sure how it would have worked anyway but does seem well known as the Airstrip

Now called the `Avenida da Correeira` ... over 1 mile long from Worms to Lusiadas .. not sure if it was ever an `airstrip` ... but due to being long and straight has had that description ..

Never any kind of airstrip! Certainly looks like one from above though.

For many years it had no name at all. I doubt many Brits could pronounce Correeira correctly, so they chose one they could. Same as for 'the strip'.

Used to go to a little bar just off the airstrip, Bar Nortenho, we called it the pink house, (it was painted pink). The owners were an elderly couple who grew vegetables and kept chickens at the side of the building. It was cheap as chips and nice to sit outside in the afternoon sun.
Wish I was there now, lol.

Corre .. is the same as Scottish `Corrie` ... a valley, or watercourse, though google goes for the Spanish `run` (ergo `runway`) ... and although `eira` shows up as snow on google translate, I was told that it meant the `wisp` that comes off corn and grasses in a wind ...   the prefix/suffix appears in Eirasol hotel bottom of Correeira ... and in another building on the edge of the Montechoro park, passed by blue and green giros ..  Doubt very much if they had snow there ..

I have only ever known it as the strip and have walked up and down it a few times and trying to cross what was known as kamikarsi crossroad till they installed pedestrian lights

Richardk I too had same problem trying to upload a photo the other day on another thread, so frustrating. One of the forum members ended up posting it for me. I have found since they have updated the website its made it so much  more difficult for me, were previous it was a simple procedure, unless I am missing something and doing it wrong.

Could anyone spell "Correeira" phonetically so that I can have a bash at it?  Something to do in my lonely shielding.

Is it Corr-ear-ah?  That doesn't take account of the "i" though.
It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear. Douglas Adams

Thanks Andrew for posting pic.
You will see the large clearing / levelling at the top left hand side of picture which is now the road so presume this is why it became known as  the airstrip. It seemed a bit of overkill as it led onto country roads

Corry ayra ..

Not a lot of the tourist resort we know in the Pic ... you can see that Vila Magna was under construction at the time, Hotel Montechoro the other prominent building up top ... but most roads were just sand .. no Santa Eulalia to speak of..
