Nice old colour pic of Fishermans Beach with no Sol e Mar, so at least pre 1962.

Excellent Andrew. Noticed the green tile building is in view. What would the 4 story apartment block/ hotel be, above the beach, any ideas?

Now we know why its called Fishermans Beach unlike the present day when not one single Fishermans boat is spotted on the sands of Praia dos Pescadores.
What an excellent image that is, thanks for sharing Andrew.

Here's a similar view of the present day. Note you cannot see the Sol e Mar in this picture either.

The four storey building is what is now the Rocamar beach hotel.

Wow you can really see the erosion of the cliffs, so rugged in the 60's and much smoother now.

JJ,
As Tom advises, I believe that is the Rocomar, or at least the block next to it, or the block behind that little triangular garden.
As you mention, and we've said on here many times, isn't it a shame the green tiled building has been allowed to deteriorate, what a grand building it was.
Yes Steve, no fishermen on "Fishermens Beach", I believe they got vacated by the tempting new outer harbour on the way into the marina, commercially and practically that may be better for them but as to its affect on the character of the town....
Thanks for the thanks folks, glad the pic bought some pleasure. I'm always on the scout so will post anymore I find that may be of interest.

The erosion of the cliffs is partly man made. A lot of loose material was scraped off a few years ago. Netting now covers the part in the foreground to stop rocks falling on people's heads. There was also a big fall of rock where the lift now stands. There used to be  a house there, right on the edge. A lot of rock was also taken from around there when the lift was built.

Great photo, but it is from the 70's. Sol E Mar was already built, just hidden in this angle.

To shed some light on your questions, you might want to research what happened in the town with the formation of the European Union. The fishermen were offered significant money to burn their boats and stop fishing. Many gave in and agreed. The older ones did not see the point in fighting. Some of the younger generation continued. This occurred throughout the Algarve in the 90's.

Would that have been when Portugal opted to join the Eurozone, rather than when the EU (then EEC) was formed in 1958, Sandpiper?

The fishermen weren't moved off the beach until 2007 but the mainstay of their industry, sardines, had gone long before that. Most of the Algarve sardine processors had closed down during the 1980's, a few lingered on until the late 90's but all are gone now. There's a rather sad museum exhibit in Vila Real telling the story.

Portugal joined the EU in 1986, just when the fishing industry was in terminal decline. I first came here in 1985, even then fishing boats were few. Mass tourism was just beginning.

I also think the original photo is from the 1970's when considering the buildings on the skyline.
