... some great old photos here, a dateline as well, predominately Fisherman’s beach and the walkway around towards what is now the marina.
Well worth a watch:- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eF72B1TjPE0 |

That is a brilliant video! Judging by the comments on it there are some strong feelings about the way that area has been developed or maybe not developed over the years. What is the full story with that "sad promenade"?

The sea has been battering that rocky outcrop for hundreds of years. Even in my short time here I have noticed large bits falling into the sea. Some old pictures show that it was once possible to walk all the way around to where the wall of the harbour now stands but that is long gone. More recently a big section at about the 2 minutes 30 second mark of the video went, I remember walking up those steps. A house once stood where the top of the lift now is. That had to be demolished as the cliff beneath it crumbled. There has been a slightly mad scheme on the books for years, to build an extension of the remaining footpath around the base of the cliff to provide level access to the marina area. Nothing done. It may have actually dawned on them that for six months of the year the sea would be hitting it very hard and it wouldn't be usable. And it probably wouldn't last long.

Thanks for the info Cubsur, It has always been one of Albufeira's curious mysteries. What a boost to the fortunes of the marina area if it could be joined up and the avoid the necessity of needing an iron lung to get back! Not like the sleepy Med though, the full force of the Atlantic Ocean is always going to be hard to contain!
